I had a plan. It was a simple plan. It involved a hunting mini-game and two giant elk rutting and slamming into each other.
It was a simple hunting trip.
….
Then the two players didn't quite meet the survival checks DCs. Repeatedly. The both of them. Over different series of survival round sections.
I had to do something.
…
So they fought actual cannibal Shia Labouf.
And won, actually. With Goromitali almost dying twice. But they did it. They beat a CR 5 encounter.
I'm so proud.
But now? Now I am going to throw myself into the ocean due to how ridiculous this turned out. Why couldn't you just make your survival checks Thea and Goromitali? Why
I did not change the stat block in any way, shape or form. I followed the song lyrics to shape the encounter
Stat Block
Goromitali gained advantage on any unarmed attack due to being a monk, inspired by the line "But you can do Jiu Jitsu (You can do it)". Thea would not have had advantage if she hit with an unarmed attack. Because she isn't a monk. I thought it fitting.
So yeah… that happened. And I’m not sorry.
Exp:
Monster CR 5 = 1,800
4 standard skill challenges = Taking average party (4) and a med. encounter (see reasoning below) of 250 each as seen on page 82 of the Dungeon Master's Guide 250x4 =1,000
2 hard combat challenges (rewards within the CR 5 creature itself)
Adventure Exp total = 2,800 (1,400 per player)
Encounter Rewards: (Level of encounter difficulty used is taken from Kai's definition of encounters)
Encounter One: Skill set one - on top of the plateau, figuring out the course of action to take STANDARD
Encounter Two: Skill set two - descending plateau STANDARD
Encounter Three: Skill set three - moving through the woods, maintaining a correct trail STANDARD
Encounter Four: Surviving initial attack of a CR 5 monster encounter HARD Creature Encounter
Encounter Five: Skill set four - avoiding bear traps and maintaining stealth AND choosing to pursue CR 5 monster STANDARD
Encounter Six: Combat with CR 5 monster HARD Creature Encounter
Reasoning:
4 standard-hard hybrid encounters that focused on skill and/or ability checks. The average modifier combined for survival and stealth, which were the most commonly used skills, was +6 between the two characters, so a +3 on average to a roll, resulting in a 65% chance of success on all DC 10 the survivals and stealth checks were. A standard is 75% success per roll and hard is 50%. 65% is in the middle, and since the roll groupings resulted in unfavorable events to the PCs I would set these as the reward for a standard EXP earned instead of hard.
2 hard encounters that focused on creature attacks. CR 5 is clearly a hard encounter, average party being 4, so the +1 to make it hard for novices checks out here. The exp earned here is all wrapped up in the monster's own CR level already. No extra XP gained despite it being split over 2 encounters.
Just one short rest was used, which neither, imo, subtracts or adds to the exp earned.
Total Finals Proposed:
BASE:
Word Count:
Arikarka - 5,921 = 1,190
Mortal - 7,163 = 1,440
Ossular - 8,128 = 1,630
Thea = 1,440 word count gold/exp + 1,400 encounter exp = 2,840 exp total, 1,440 gold (add 500 if bonus gold approved)
Goromitali = 1,630 word count gold/exp + 1,400 encounter exp = 3,030 exp, 1,630 gold (add 500 if bonus gold approved)
Proposed BONUS Awards:
+1,000 gold split (500 each) for high end novice encounter
+2 each common magic item
+1 each uncommon magic item
Susie takes back the healing cream, no matter number of uses left - adventure only item
DM Rewards:
1,190 gold and exp given to Citrine plus one DM voucher
21,260+1,190=22,450
