History:
Laurelai was always drawn to the call of adventure. Her parents were travelling performers, drifting around the continent where their whims dictated and always delighting the locals. The tales they spun and the legends they told meant that, as she grew, Laurelai was more and more certain that she would never be happy as anything other than an adventurer herself. She wanted her name to be one of the ones spoken about in legend, and why not? She was quick, and smart, and there wasn’t anything in the world that gave her pause.
She set off when she was only 80, and fell into step with a group of adventurers where she learned her trade. With her quick wits, good eye, and gift with a longbow, she proved to be especially adept at guiding the way through old ruins and to all kinds of wealth. It was never the history or the reward which interested her, though, it was always the thrill of the adventure itself.
This did not go unnoticed, and she was approached by a group known as the Order of the Wheel. This organisation was spread throughout the multiverse, a multi-planar organisation dedicated to uncovering the true nature of reality and all its myriad secrets; recovering lost artefacts, new forms of magic, and sources of power. The Order trained its operatives well, and though it took years for her to earn the trust necessary to be inducted, by the time she was – she had become a true believer. She loved the travel, the freedom, and the ability to test her skills in unbelievable, impossible places.
She rarely saw her handler, an individual she knew only as Ace, who had a different face and race every time she met them, but she conducted operations across countless cities in countless realms. For over eight decades, she dedicated herself to the perfection of her craft, setting up networks of contacts and informants to funnel information and intrigue to The Order. She conducted illicit raids into the forgotten places of those cities, recovered priceless items for her people and generally felt like she’d found the calling for her life’s work.
Then she met Ace for a drink in a bar in Sigil, and when she woke up she was in Waterdeep. The magic items she’d used to travel across the planes and keep in touch with her people were gone, and just a single note remained on her person:
You’re out. Await further instruction.
-Ace.
Needless to say, she is not happy.
Personality:
Laurelai is – generally speaking – a happy, cheerful, and upbeat soul. She takes little in life seriously, and is good company. This is the front that she works to put up for others. She also, it should be noted, very rarely actually uses her real name. Names, after all, have power, and it is always better to be someone else should you need to disappear. Thankfully, in the adventuring community, she is hardly the only one with this little foible.
Lying comes as easily as breathing to Laurelai. She dissembles, deflects and deceives as though it were second nature. She is also an extremely apt reader of people; she is a spy, after all, and it is important for a spy to be able to know their mark. Despite all that, when she does genuinely commit to something, her loyalty is absolute.
She is extremely confused by the decision of The Order of the Wheel to cut ties with her, but she’s not the sort to take it laying down. She has contacts of her own in Waterdeep – as she does in most places of note – and she is driven by the goal of getting herself back into the good graces of the Order.
Alongside that, she needs to survive, and she’s suffered a serious setback with the loss of her many magic items. The tools that she once considered vital to her day to day survival have been stripped from her. She wasn’t even left with a bow; she had to raid one of her old supply caches to get what little she currently has.
She’s fallen very far, but she’s sure that it won’t be long before she’s back up and out there where she belongs. She’s an elf, after all. She’s got time in abundance… even if she is not, naturally, a patient soul.
