History:
Waterdeep has been a refuge for those who have nowhere else to go for many years. So it was with Nascha’s family. In the generations which followed their decimation in the Hin Ghostwars, their people dispersed and the nomadic life no longer held its appeal. Over time, they eventually drifted to the Sword Coast, and to Waterdeep.
As a child, Nascha chafed at the life her family expected of her as good, hard-working folk; she was destined, they believed, to become a cobbler. Nascha had a more contemplative soul, she wanted to study and learn the way the world truly worked – deeper secrets than the fit of making fine boots.
She was bright enough to earn entrance into Candlekeep as a scribe, and once there, she studied relentlessly. She was not the most sharp-witted of the scholars, but she was determined and she saw holes in the knowledge; so much was written on religious, arcane and historical lore. So little attempted to understand the impenetrable world of the druids in their own terms, rather than impressing their own biases upon it. This seemed so obvious to her, and yet few of her fellows even seemed interested in the lack, if they could comprehend the shape of it to begin with. Nature, spirits, and the majesty of wild beasts. These were the very things she had rarely had the opportunity to see in the city, and they were what fascinated her the most!
Her inquiries brought her to the attention of those who shared her interest in the natural world. She became something of a naturalist, traveling under the auspices of Candlekeep to observe and write on rare species of plant and beast.
This dry, academic interest could not satisfy her forever. The more time she spent in the wilds, the more she heard the ineffable song of the natural world. Her writing became more passionate, less in line with the style preferred by Candlekeep. But as she lost respectability in Candlekeep, she gained it in other quarters – patronage came, anonymous at first, then through intermediaries, until she was at last invited to join the Emerald Enclave; to lend her knowledge and talents to the betterment and protection of the natural world which she so loves.
She accepted, of course, and the irony of the fact that she has returned to Waterdeep is not lost on her.
Personality:
Nascha is a quiet and introspective soul by nature – despite her deep passions and strong emotions, she is a trained scholar and her first instinct is to analyse and understand, particularly when she is taken by surprise or horrified by what she is seeing.
What sets her apart from other druids, who are traditionally a rather secretive lot, is her ideological opposition to such secrets. Nascha truly believes that it is only through understanding that people can be encouraged to change their ways. The way that most druids attempt to stop expansion into woodland, for instance, is actively counterproductive to her way of thinking. Most harness the power of nature to drive back those who are seeking to expand.
This pits the woodland as the enemy of the people; it encourages them to return when they have force enough to take what they desire.
Nascha wants to spread understanding and appreciation of the natural world in order to help change that endless cycle of competition and destruction.
This is not to say that she is adverse to taking direct action. Whilst she is not the most experienced soul in the world, she has enough experience to know that there are plenty of people and monsters who cannot be reasoned with and whose existence is directly anathema to a peaceful existence. Those, she is more than happy to destroy.
