History:
You can never appreciate the importance of money until you’ve gone hungry.
Erato was born in Suzail, as Emily Duggins. Unfortunately her family was extremely poor, both her parents being unskilled labourers, and the girl was seen as little more than another mouth to feed. Nor was her obvious intelligence looked upon favourably. By the age of 6, she had taught herself to read and write by examining the books in the houses she cleaned with her mother, something neither of her parents nor any of her many siblings could do.
Far from encouraging this behaviour, her parents were intimidated and fearful of their child’s prowess and sought to crush it. They told her that she was getting ideas ‘above her station’ and that the Gods punished those who showed pride and asked too many questions. This did not dissuade the girl as they had hoped, it only made her more resolved. The books she had studied had already taught her many things, and she was sure they would teach her much more. As her father’s drinking became a greater problem, what she really wanted to learn was a way out of the misery of her day to day life.
And eventually she found it.
More and more often, the girl had taken to browsing the market stalls and bookstores of Suzail as a means of avoiding return to the drudgery of her home and the inevitable anger of her parents and bullying of her siblings. It was in one of those bookstores that she came across a slender volume which contained actual arcane knowledge.
The notebook had once belonged to a student at the Blackstaff Academy, and though the secrets contained within were just the barest scraps of magical knowledge, for the young Emily they were enough to spark her imagination.
She could never have afforded the book, so she stole it, and fled the city that very night, taking on the name ‘Erato’ and cutting all ties with her previous life.
Her journey was long and arduous, but she has at last made it to Waterdeep, where she hopes to continue her magical studies and propel herself beyond her humble roots.
Personality:
Erato values her freedom before all other things. She has lived a life of continuous disappointment and neglect where she has been pushed down and told she can’t do things. Where this might break a less wilful soul, Erato has violently kicked back against the notion that she is limited in any way by her birth or station.
She often comes across as brash, brazen and foolhardy – she is, after all, a teenager – and in truth this is all hiding her deep-seated insecurities. She wonders if her parents might not have been right; that she is struggling to be something she’s not, and making herself a danger to herself and others as a result.
She refuses to let that stop her, though. She wants to obtain magical power; to prove to herself and the rest of the world that she can be a great hero, and that she can stand on her own terms.
