Deity: Practices traditional Goliath Animism
Size: Medium (Large for Push/Pull/Lift Weight limits)
Hair: Bald
Eyes: Green
Height: 8’ 0”
Weight: 337 lbs
Age: 26
Appearance:
To say that Nakan stands out could be considered one of the understatements of the century. While he is certainly not the only Goliath to ever grace the Sword Coast, his people are still a rarity in the more “civilized” lands of Faerun.
He stands a solid eight feet tall barefoot, with a few inches extra when wearing boots. His overall frame and build could be accurately described as “solid” or “mountainous” by the casual observer. His body is well padded in heavy layers of dense muscle, formed by a life of near constant labor, long distance trekking, as well as training and combat.
The most exotic or strange aspect of Nakan’s appearance is likely his skin. A deep, slate gray tone colors the majority of his skin, broken up by vertically symmetrical lines of onyx black pigment running in vaguely geometric patterns along his arms, back, and scalp. In addition to his hereditary skin tone, Nakan’s flesh is also marred by numerous scars. Most of his more recent ones are from blades and arrows, the light colored scars focused mostly around his arms and upper torso serving as a testament to the Goliath’s thick (figuratively and literally) skin.
The more shocking scars, however, are those caused by Nakan’s fight with the great Cave Bear. These scars provide vivid clues to the severity of the once massive wounds they once were. Knotted, thick scar tissue cover swaths of Nakan’s back, his abdomen, neck, and upper right arm. While the wounds have healed, some damage still remains in the nerves and tendons, causing unpleasant aches during cold and humid weather.
As for the rest of his physical appearance, Nakan simply looks like an average humanoid, aside from his broad chin, high cheekbones, and heavier bone structure.
History:
Nakan was born far to the East of the Sword Coast, high in the Icerim Mountains to the north of Rashemen and Narfell. As part of the Ugunavi Tribe of Goliaths, Nakan was raised with his people’s traditions and laws firmly in mind. Like most other young Goliaths, he was put to work to support the tribe soon after his tenth year. The Icerim Mountains were not a hospitable place, and every member of the tribe was expected to take care of themselves and the needs of the tribe.
Nakan learned just how harsh life in the mountains was at a young age. His father, Arkin Truthwalker, was killed by a roaming Cave Bear when Nakan was 17 years old. In honor of his father, as well as to test his own skill and ability, Nakan embarked on a seven-month-long quest of tracking the beast, intending to slay the creature to avenge Arkin and win glory for himself and his tribe. When Nakan finally found the bear and cornered it upon a high plateau, the battle raged on for hours. It was in this struggle, heavily wounded and at the precipice of death, that Nakan learned to harness his rage. With a final, desperate surge of raw strength, Nakan buried his axe in the skull of the beast. The battle was won, but it still nearly killed Nakan. He still carries the scars of the fight, and the severed muscles and tendons - though fully healed - still ache in cold and damp weather.
Nakan earned his honorific name after the clash with the bear and earned himself a great deal of prestige among his tribe. For the next several years, he was often one of the Captains for hunting and scouting duties each day and often led the charge when the tribe found itself in battle.
However, Nakan’s life changed drastically two years ago. During a scouting mission, Nakan’s group came under attack from Human tribals. The enemy had superior numbers and had ambushed the Goliaths without warning. All but Nakan and a single other Goliath were slain. Nakan took the defeat personally, believing he had failed his tribe and comrades by leading them into the ambush. Rather than returning to the Ugunavi and possibly placing them in the awkward position of having to exile him, he chose instead to leave of his own accord. He sent the other survivor back to the village, telling them to bring word to the Chieftain of his departure from the tribe.
With his life in the tribe now over, Nakan set a course out of the mountains. Over the next two years, he traveled Faerun extensively. He wandered the wilderness of Rashemen and Narfell, and crossed the Sea of Fallen Stars, sailing from Telflamm to Westgate. Now, he has journeyed to the sword coast, following the Trade Way towards the Crown of The North...Waterdeep.
Personality:
Nakan embodies the spirit of his tribe and Goliaths as a whole. He is often outspoken in regards to his opinions and thoughts on any given situation or person, and these thoughts and opinions are often shaped by his traditions and upbringing instilling a focus on trust, honor, and fair play. In addition, he is competitive to a fault and often tells tales of his accomplishments and exploits. However, he doesn’t gloat to belittle others or simply to boost his ego. As with most other Goliaths, this “score-keeping” is seen as an integral and vital part of his life.
While often thoughtful, calm, and rational in most circumstances, he flies into a frightening rage when in prolonged or intense conflict. This fighting style isn’t born of training or simple mindless anger. Instead, it has become an instinct honed by the brutality and harshness of the Icerim Mountains, where every day is a fight for survival.
