There are a thousand reasons not to venture into the sewers beneath Waterdeep. The foul-smelling guts of the City of Splendours are perpetually clogged with the nightmarish runoff from its many residents and their bizarre predilections. The semi-animate sludge from a thousand wizards’ labs, the few residents so monstrous and hateful that they could not find acceptance on the City’s open streets, and the natural ecology that has sprung up around such horrors all combine to make the sewers the kind of space that any right-thinking individual would go through extreme lengths to try and avoid. But, then, adventurers have never been known as right-thinking types, have they? And there are a few reasons why one might have to venture into such a space. For instance, in the pursuit of justice! Or coin. Justice pays well. It is a hot, humid night when the City Watch gather Stephen, Hylid and Artemis together. The Watchman – a lanky soul by the name of Sandy – has used a crowbar to lever up the cover and open a space down into the darkness of the City’s fetid innards. Steam rises in discomforting plumes from the gaping wound in the street, and he leans against a nearby wall, crowbar slung over his shoulder as the City does its best to carry on around them, ignoring the work that its protectors do to set things right. The Watchman’s pale blue eyes take in the assembled trio, and he lights up a hand-rolled cigarette to add his own noxious fumes to those he has unleashed from the winding layers of sludge beneath their feet. “Watedeep’d like to thank ye for ye service.” He drawls, jerking his thumb to the fine manor house behind them – or, more accurately, the wall surrounding it upon which he rests. “Her Ladyship’s place was robbed last night, and this grating was open when we got around to investigating. Sloppy, but thieves usually are. I’d bet your right legs that they headed that way.” He nods down the street, “Because the other way takes ‘em into finer places. But I ain’t bettin’ my right leg and having a poke down there meself. Neither are any of the other lads, so that’s where you lot come in. See if you can’t figure out what these idjits are up to. If they ain’t got themselves et by whatever else is down there already, aight?” It isn’t really a question. Sandy doesn’t seem like the sort who does well with asking too many questions. But there’s quite the motley crew assembled here; a private investigator, a foreigner from distant lands (which is arguably the natural state in Waterdeep), and a warforged of prodigious height. Between the three of them, they might just have a chance of surviving the rats – though from the way that Sandy looks at them, it doesn’t look like the watchman is willing to put a great deal of money on that supposition. Stephen eyed the fetid hole leading underground. The smell was... Unique. His eyes flicked up to the building, then back to the sewer. He supposed it would be an easier way into the property than the wall, to say nothing of whatever guards and magical wards were likely waiting. He'd seen plenty of robberies in his time, and he knew that criminals would go to great lengths for a score. He fished a black bandana from his pocket, tying it around his face to protect from the fumes. "No witnesses? Nobody noticed any foul smelling people around the time of the robbery? And is there perhaps a map of these sewers we could use?"

"Excellent approach" Artemis chimes in following the flow of questions asked by Stephen. The Warforged stands tall, unphased by the noxious fumes of the depths below wafting up. He leans over the edge to look down the edge to have a cursory glance into the darkness awaiting them.
He turns back to the Watchman to join in with gathering further data as he always believed, preparation is the basis of all successful achievements. "How much did they steal? Was it anything in particularly large in size or amount? Do you have any information on the thieves themselves? It would help us if we have anything to go on, potential races or if they hail from a particular gang? Though now that you mention it, I really need to acclimatise myself with the social balancing of the underbelly of this city" he rambled off.
"Are we to bring them back alive or is any state of condition permissible?" This cold final question leaving his lips by such a gentle looking face was such a strange sight in this alleyway. One could be forgiven for mistaking it for a darker mindset, if they had not known the Warforged was asking from a purely inquisitive sense.

Hylid take a moment to adjust his goggles. They do nothing but protect his eyes but he always thought they looked good. He has a small book in his hands that he is using to take notes of the information given. He waits to hear the answers to the questions Artemis asks as they were a good start. He then thought a moment and added, “Any indication given as to how many people we are looking for here?
Waiting on that information, Hylid goes about preparing to go into the sewers. He adjusts his armor, wipes his goggles, and checks his mace. He may not know what is down there or much about the two he is going down there with but he has faith in his gear and his brain to get him through it. After all, chance favors the prepared mind. That and the ideas he has for magic powered armor are not going to be cheap.

“Newp. If we had leads, we wouldn’t be paying the wiz-kids to solve our problems for us. You think the Watch is made of money?” He chuckles to himself, putting the cigarette to his lips and puffing away. “I don’t care how you bring ‘em back in.” He clarifies to the immense Warforged. “One piece, a dozen, whatever. Proof that they did it and you ain’t just killed some hobo and pinned it on him would be grand. Some of the dame’s jewellery or whatever. You know the score.” It seems that the City Watch are not in the habit of asking too many questions when things have gotten to the point where they are willing to shell out good gold on a group of ‘contractors’. Waterdeep as a City is one which runs entirely on trade and commerce. When it came time to lay down the law, the severity with which it is laid down all too often is commensurate to the amount of money backing it. “If I had to guess.” He continued, idly, “I’d say there’s probably a gang of ‘em. But they’re smart enough to work in teams of two or three. Only one guy needs to go in. Probably need a couple more to watch for alarms. Any more’n that and we’d have witnesses. Of course, could be a magical bastard. Then who the hell knows? But I don’t reckon many wizards crawl around in the sewers if they got a choice.” (Wordcount: 247/737) 3personal5me Aafuuu taskytony

Stephen looked around, at the rough cobblestone street, the manhole, and it's cover. He slowly circled the area, searching for any clues that could possibly help; footprints, scrapes, or torn fabric.

Artemis watched the man investigating the manhole in great detail and stood for a moment observing him. He seemed to be caught up in looking for details in particular, for what exactly Artemis was not sure. But it seemed important to the case at hand and Artemis thought it best to let him be for now.
He turned his attention to the other individual nearby. "Hi, I'm Artemis, what's your name?" He asked Hylid. "It seems our colleague is searching for clues. Are you ready to pursue our targets deeper into the sewers? We best be on guard so I'll light up a small light to see just ahead of us." As Artemis lights his torch he takes out of a satchel by his hip. He walks over to the entrance of the sewers to peer inside with the torchlight held near.
He peers deep inside to look into the darkness below.

“Fair enough” Hylid says after hearing the answers given by the City Watch.
He puts his mace in the loop on the left side of his armor and then turns to face the man addressing him extending his hand to shake. “Hello Artemis, my name is Hylid. Please to meet you. I am ready to go into the sewers sure. I do wish there was more information but you work with what you have. I will also provide some light for us.”
Hylid then cast light on his shield which is strapped to his left arm. He then walks over to the sewer entrance to take a look for himself.

The watchman doesn’t share any more information, watching the group as they set about doing his job for him. It seems that too much time has passed for there to be any useful clues in the surrounding area; traffic in this part of Waterdeep might be sparse, but that is very much a relative term and enough horses and carriages have been through the street to obscure any hope of finding useful tracks. At first, the darkness of the sewers precludes any clue as to what awaits them, but Hylid’s shield provides enough of a light to penetrate the darkness and illuminate what is a relatively gentle drop. The sewers have been designed to accommodate some of the City’s larger municipal workers – which is probably why so many creatures have such great fun roaming through the slick nightmare of Waterdeep’s innards. The drop down is perhaps ten or eleven feet in total, though a ladder set into the side of the entrance will make it more than feasible for the individuals to hang from it and drop down. This is, mercifully, a relatively sparsely populated thoroughfare, and whilst there is still the deeply unpleasant stench of sewer water in the flowing centre of the space, there are walkways to either side and nothing immediately waiting to ambush the intrepid trio other than some startled rats. Looking at his smith hammer and comparing it to his mace, Hylid noticed they were about the same weight and would likely do the same damage. The difference being that he could use it for his magic so he put the mace to his side and drew his hammer. He like the hammer better anyway. It was such a primal tool of creation.
“Since my shield seems to give off the most light, I would suggest letting me go first unless either of you just really want the honor? I trust you both will do what you can to see that I don’t regret it. “
With that, Hylid makes his way down the ladder as much as possible and drops the rest of the way.

"Sure, I'm more suited for ranged combat. So it would be best if someone more frontline like yourself took point."
Artemis followed down after Hylid into the dark and murky depths below the surface of Waterdeep. Torch in hand, Artemis takes a look around his new environment. He equips his shield to hand and using his bonus action, prepares his wand.
Wand now extended out from his wrist, Artemis is now ready to explore into the sewers.
Stepping forward into the squelching sludge beneath his feet, he steps aside to allow space for Stephen to join them. "So Hylid, where to first?" He asks raising his torch to light up as much of the tunnel as he can.

Stephen pulled his Goggles of Night over his eyes, blinking in the suddenly much brighter sun. He tucked his coat close against his body and dropped through the hole, his boots landing in the muck with a wet squelch. He adjusted his bandana slightly, doing his best to block out the stench invading his nostrils. He'd certainly smelled worse (days old murder scenes came to mind), but it was unpleasant nonetheless. "I can scout ahead. I'm no stranger to the dark". He examined the tunnel walls surrounding them. "I would imagine we start by heading towards the manner", he said, pointing down the darkened tunnel. He double checked that his baton still hung from his hip, and none of the daggers in his coat had become dislodged. "There's no telling what may be down here, but I doubt it will appreciate the intrusion. Keep your weapons ready, and your eyes peeled".

Seeing the bandana pulled over Stephens mouth. Artemis suddenly thought of an idea reaching out to tap Stephen on the shoulder.
"I don't know if it'll help much, but I can help with the stink if it's distracting you?" Artemis says his hand held out reaching to Stephens bandana. "I can have it smell like fresh clean air instead" tiny small arcane like particles began to float off of Artemis' hands. "I can help you both if you want?" Artemis addressing Hylid as well.
"Don't worry about me, I can't smell anything as long as I don't breathe" he said so casually as though this was a normal thing for anyone to do.

“Stephen has the right idea to start at the manor and work from there. That would be the last place we would know they were. As for the smell, I appreciate the offer. I was going to breathe through my mouth but if you have magic to change the smell then that works too.” Hylid makes his way slowly toward the mannor trying to keep his eyes open for anything

Stephen shook his head. "I'll stick with the smell. No offense". The worst of the smell was already fading as he became accustomed to it. And at the very least, it built character. He quicjly caught up with Hylid, moving beyond the range of his Light so that he may stealthily scout ahead.
