"Hey--when you're done resting, come have a look at this." Avren called over her shoulder, standing up and resting her hands on her hips as she notes the various signs with a frown. None of this meant anything good, of that she was certain. "More goblin tracks, from a dozen or so...and two larger bodies. They could be human...."

Aronin looked over the gear on the goblins, but didn't see anything worth taking. He sat quietly next to the wagon, and started to channel magic into his arcane focus. He pulled up his left sleeve to reveal the focus which is tied to his wrist, and it began to glow faint blue. The red-haired wizard closed his eyes and began to make the necessary incantations. He fell into a deep focus, and became completely shut out from his surroundings.
He remained in this state for around ten minutes, before a swirl of magically energy spiraled on the ground in front of him. With a blink of an eye, a brown hawk appeared within the center of the spiraling magic. The energy faded, and Aronin opened his eyes to find his companion staring at him curiously. A telepathic link bonded the two, and the wizard greeted his old friend. Good morning, Ace. The wizard nodded to his familiar, and it took flight. The hawk circled the air above the party, to take in the surroundings and then found a nice branch to perch on in the shade.
Aronin continued his rest and felt some of the energy he expended during the skirmish return to him. He watched Avren studying the tracks, and stood to come look at what she had found.
"Those do look human... I know it wasn't in our job description but I think we should follow these tracks. There might be hostages that need saving.."

As you poke through the remains of the battlefield, you can both make investigation checks.

You both recognise one of the horses from the night you got the contract from Gundren, it was tied outside the tavern where you were playing and gambling. Avren, you also find, marked on the bottom of the empty map case, the initials 'G.R.'

"G.R....Gundren Rockseeker. Damnit." Avren heaved a sigh after inspecting the map case, tucking it away in her pack. "Well, now we know who the hostages are, without a doubt. Let's get going, I doubt there's that much time to lose." Her lips formed a thin line, not liking their current odds. They took out a few of the goblins just now, yes, but there were bound to be more. They had to play this carefully, if they were to come out on top.
Sheathing her rapier, Avren turned to the others and raised an eyebrow. Ready to continue?

Lykus pauses to weigh up his options. Ten gold for a caravan detail was one thing, but a rescue mission...?
Thinking back to the initial agreement, Gundren had mentioned 'something big.' He eyed the map case in Avren's hand and thought to himself, even if the dwarf was dead, that map might be worth recovering.
Breaking out of his reverie;
Let's go.
[Can I get your marching order at this point? Also in what manner you would like to proceed (scouting, stealthing, hastily, etc)]

(Avren would like to stealth, since they don't know numbers yet. And unless anyone is quieter, she can go ahead a little ways.)

[Aronin will send Ace to scout ahead with Avren to get a birdseye view of what is going on. Ace will stay within range of Aronin to keep communication up, and warn Aronin if Avren gets into any trouble. Aronin himself will march close behind Lykus and watch his back.]

You take a moment to lead the oxen to the side of the trail and tether them in the scrub before setting off up the trail. They are not well hidden, but may be missed by anyone travelling, absent-minded, down the path. Brief consideration is given to hiding the bodies of the goblins and horses but Lykus says,
Leave them, the next group of goblins might think twice about an ambush here.
Aronin's Hawk takes to the sky and keeps an eye on the group through the canopy although Avren is doing her best to make this a difficult task for the bird.
[Avren make a stealth check and a perception check] [Aronin make a perception check for Ace]

You travel up the trail for ten minutes or so without encountering any more goblins.
Avren, just as you're starting to relax from the tension of expected ambush, you just manage to spot a snare trap in the middle of the path. It is loosely covered by leaves on the ground. You can easily trace the rope to the triggering branch and cut the rope, making it ineffective.
Aronin, Ace doesn't spot any more threats, and continues to circle above.
[Avren, make another perception check]

Well, that could have been quite nasty. Avren frowned as she spotted the snare trap, pointing it out to others before cutting the rope. She gestured to the trap and then all around, indicating that they should take care since there are likely to be more such traps in the area. With that, she continues at a slower and more careful pace.
