History:
Zelphar was brought into the world under tragic circumstances, for which he had no control over. Instead of being born to two loving parents, he was an illegitimate child that was conceived when a Shadar-Kai forced himself onto his mother. His father, Varriss, was a ruthless leader of Shadar-Kai mercenaries who hunted for fun and coin. This malicious band captured a very unexpected prisoner during a caravan raid. The beautiful Eladrin Elf named Anshana was taken hostage. It made no difference to the Shadar-Kai whether she was dead or alive, however Varriss was particularly interested in what would happen if he procreated with the prisoner. Eventually Anshana became pregnant with Zelphar, and was kept alive until she gave birth. She was executed before her son could remember her.
The band of killers started to raise the half-breed, but it became obvious to them that Zelphar was different. They believed him to be weak, soft, and cried way too much. During a raid on a small village within the High Forest, the band of mercenaries were forced to retreat and left the half-breed for dead. Zelphar was captured and imprisoned by the wood elves who inhabited the village. He was only a child and posed no real threat to the villagers, but this did not change the fact that he was a Shadar-Kai offspring. Most of the villagers hated the boy and his ancestry, they blamed him for the deaths of their fellow tribesmen. However, one among them saw something in the boy the others didn’t and plead that he be released into his care. After a few months of living in captivity, he was finally released and Kaluth Kelhanna became his guardian.
Despite the circumstances, Kaluth treated Zelphar as if he were his own child. Although the boy was sometimes tough to deal with, Kaluth did truly care for him. Zelphar was blessed to finally live a sort of average childhood. Due to the nature of his personality, the boy was able to easily deal with whatever hateful treatment he received from the other villagers. In an attempt to help his son’s reputation, Kaluth raised him to follow the Wood elf customs of their village. However, as Zelphar grew closer to reaching maturity the hostilities from the rest of the villagers increased. They feared that once he was an adult, he would pose a threat to the village, and silently assassinate them in their sleep. Controversy on the issue spread throughout the village. As tensions continued to rise, the village elders decided it would be best if Zelphar where to leave the village on his 75th birthday.
Zelphar agreed to the decision calmly, while Kaluth was outraged. His guardian could not understand how the entire village could make such a decision after 70 years of having his son live among them. Regardless, the decision was made.
On Zelphar’s final night with his foster father, Kaluth revealed to him a deep secret he had kept hidden from him his whole life. Kaluth once lived in this village with his beloved wife, who was no longer with them. Her name was Anshana, and she was the most beautiful elf that Kaluth had ever seen. They had been happily married, but she was taken from him prematurely while traveling with a caravan through the High Forest. At first the resemblance was very subtle, Kaluth wasn’t entirely sure why he felt drawn to care for this boy. As time went on, it became more obvious and impossible to ignore that Zelphar was his late wife’s illegitimate child. Despite knowing this, he always treated the boy with nothing but love and care. He knew deep down inside that doing so would make Anshana happy in the afterlife.
Zelphar did not take the news so calmly, the shock of it all triggered an overflow of emotion that he didn’t know what to do with. There was hatred and blinding rage followed by pity and guilt. He swore that he would avenge his mother’s death and eliminate any Shadar-Kai who practiced the same kind of cruelty Varriss did.
The rush of emotion eventually subsided, and on the following day he departed from the village in the High Forest. While travelling he had learned that if he wanted any kind of information, Waterdeep was the place to be. Thus, the half-blood elf made his way to the iconic city. His acquired skill set from living in the forest did not translate well to the city, however he was able to quickly adapt and made a living for himself as an amateur bounty hunter. This was done in an attempt to improve his skills in finding criminals, which would come in handy to locate his biological father.
Personality:
The unlikely mix between Shadar-Kai and Eladrin blood has crafted a peculiar nature that categorizes Zelphar as neither one nor the other. He is somehow both emotionless yet full of emotion. The internal rift he harbors is mysterious even to himself, and he has since given up on the idea of understanding his own struggle. On the surface, he appears to be more aligned with his father’s blood. He is devoid of any emotion, but he isn’t anywhere near as malicious as other Shadar-Kai. He is completely logical and extremely practical. Zelphar doesn’t treat others negatively nor positively, he is truly neutral. The lack of emotion on his face and in his speech often makes him appear almost robotic.
Most Shadar-Kai in the material plane suffer from the Shadow Curse, which attempts to pull their very soul back to Shadowfell. In order to avoid this, many of the afflicted resort to causing self-inflicting pain to embrace emotion. Fortunately, Zelphar was blessed by his mother’s blood. Although he avoided the Shadow Curse, he was gifted with something else entirely. Whenever he is inflicted with any kind of physical pain, his personality suddenly changes to align with his Eladrin ancestors. The shock on his body seems to weaken and pierce his hard Shadar-Kai exterior. The emotion he begins to display is directly proportional the damage done on his body. His mental state can thus vary between some light humor to extreme pride fullness to a terrible depression. The rate at which Zelphar’s mental state moves through these phases is also proportional to the damage he has taken. More often then not, his environment tends to dictate his moods. A night getting drunk in an inn for example, would most likely make him extremely jovial.
