History:
Born in Leuthilspar, the capital of Evermeet, Rinn has ever been a stubborn elf.
The daughter of courtiers, functionaries within the Queen’s own court, Rinn had a piercing insight and sharp tongue uncommon to her people. Where most elves are gifted with an abundance of patience, Rinn was prone to speak her mind and state things clear and plain where she saw them. This precociousness in a child was a source of both pride and embarrassment in her parents, and it was a habit which time would not dull in her as they hoped it might.
More embarrassing still was the fact that the young Rinn had no interest whatsoever in magic. She was far more grounded in the material and physical; the aspects of the world that she felt mattered most of all. It is only natural for children to have curiosity about the world and to want to learn the ways of their own bodies, but such childish concerns usually end after a few decades and the limitations of the physical become barriers to be transcended by the magical.
Not so in Rinn’s case. She seemed only to grow more curious as to how far she could push herself the more the limitations of the physical attempted to impose themselves upon her. She did not even show overmuch interest in the traditional weapons of her people; fighting, itself, held little interest for her. She was an athlete; enamoured with pushing her body to the limit merely for the gaudy sake of doing so.
The patience of her parents was finally at an end when their daughter refused to take a ‘proper’ name. She was Rinn! She had been Rinn for over a hundred years, and she did not see that it made any sense to suddenly rename herself because she had managed the rather unchallenging task of surviving to her hundredth year in the safest place in the Realms.
Like any good courtiers, they did not invoke their revenge upon their daughter quickly. Instead, they laid the groundwork and waited.
The Spellplague slowed things down a bit, but in the upheaval of the Queen’s disappearance, they were finally granted the perfect opportunity. They convinced the Council to dispatch Rinn as a diplomatic envoy from Evermeet to Waterdeep. The intention was that this would force their wayward daughter to begin taking life and her responsibilities more seriously. It also had the dual advantage of sending someone entirely unimportant to Waterdeep whilst Evermeet’s great and good could continue to focus on the rather more important task of shoring up their stability and selecting a new monarch.
Rinn might be obstinate, but she could hardly refuse such a posting. Besides, she considered it a great opportunity to see the outside world.
Thus far, it is … not to her liking.
Personality:
Rinn is a brat.
Oh, she’s good natured enough underneath it all. She doesn’t go out of her way to hurt people; she just considers herself to be, well, better than most non-Elves.
It isn’t anything personal. The simple fact is that she comes from a city where the streets are literally paved with gems, where she was the daughter of important functionaries who answered only to the Queen, where magic is such a central part of life that she considered it no more worthy of her attention than most people consider learning how to build with brick and mortar.
It doesn’t help that she has such an incredibly strong will and perceptive personality. She tends to just see through most dissembling and can read the intentions of others very sharply. The motivations of most people that she meets on a day to day basis are small and petty compared to her people’s.
She’s also used to the finer things in life. The best elvish wines, the most beautiful music, the very pinnacle of art and culture, and all the free time she wants to do whatever she wishes.
Now she finds herself forced into a position where she has to rub shoulders with nobles who drink swill and government functionaries who drink even worse; bawdy performances which lack subtly or true nuance, and boring meetings where she is expected to pretend to care about things which truly mean nothing to her.
She has always lived life precisely the way she wished, and she looked forward to many hundreds of years more doing just that. Now, suddenly, she has to send reports back home and act on instruction from her own people. She has to sit still and listen and comprehend facts which she considers entirely irrelevant.
It is basically hell.
