History:
Sister Valerie was never particularly well-suited to the strict rituals and hierarchy of the Church into which she had been born. She never knew her parents, having been given up for adoption at birth and taken under the wing of the Sisterhood of the Silver Hammer. There, she rankled under the yoke of her fellow Sisters.
And yet, her faith was undeniably strong. She held in her heart such a surfeit of faith that she would often burst into impromptu speeches and declarations of dramatic love for Justice; to the extent that it became something of a running joke amongst her fellows.
Valerie was terrible at so many of the duties expected of a novice Sister. She was an awful cook, a slapdash cleaner, and her fervour was often disturbing to the more well-to-do visitors to the abbey; though she was incredibly popular with the common folk, who found her rousing invective and sincere desire to encourage them to glory uplifting in a world where they are so commonly downtrodden.
In an attempt to mitigate her excesses, she was sent to a notoriously difficult and under-supported Church of Tyr in Waterdeep’s Downshadow. It wasn’t that her Sisters doubted her faith for an instant; indeed, Sister Valerie had rare talent when it came to beseeching Tyr for His divine aid! They just wished that, perhaps, just maybe, she could rein it in a bit? The thought was that exposing her to actual hardship would convince her of the necessity of structure, law and order in helping the common folk.
The actual result was the exact opposite. Sister Valerie was emboldened by her interactions, and she was soon the de-facto leader of that crumbling little mission, driving out the bitter old priest who had been weighed down under the weight of his thankless mission. She renamed the tiny building The Grim Abbey; much to the chagrin of other worshippers of Tyr, but to date this has not dampened her spirits or enthusiasm in the least.
Personality:
Valerie is bombastic, over the top, and extremely loud. She is also, genuinely, a good-hearted person who truly believes that if everyone would only let themselves do it, they could be truly great. She has little patience for modesty, even less so when it is false, and she works herself half to death in the name of keeping that tiny flare of Tyr’s faith alive.
The fact that her particular incarnation of Tyr’s faith is not, perhaps, one hundred per cent in line with classical Tyr theology does not worry her in the least. As far as she is concerned, Tyr stands for three things above all:
1) JUSTICE. Preferably of the BURNING variety.
2) GREATNESS. Be the best that you can be!
3) FEARLESSNESS. Never back down! Never take a step away from your goals! Pursue them all with RIGHTEOUS VIGOR!
Valerie experiences ALL of her emotions at 110% volume. She is never happy; she is joyous! She is never angry, she is WRATHFUL! She is never sad, she is desolate. She also has shockingly little respect for rules and authority. She is perfectly content to declare that she is in fact her own High Abbess now that she has her own Abbey (even if this was never sanctioned by any of the other Holy Justices) and she believes that the only being she truly answers to in this world or the next is Tyr.
Whilst some people can mistake her fiery speeches and exhortations to greatness to be arrogance or judgement, in truth, Valerie just hates to see people wasting their potential – and she will always, always, ALWAYS be there to lend a strong hand and a loud (if not necessarily kind) word to those who have fallen by the wayside.
