Biography
Character Name: Reikuna Kitozon
Character Level: 3
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Deity: Dendar (née Umberlee)
Size: Medium
Hair: Black
Eyes: Hazel
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 114lbs
Appearance:
Reikuna is physically unimposing; a little over five feet of well-toned muscle on a petite frame. Her skin is naturally pale, but flushed here and there from frequent contact with the sun, lending her something of a naturally made-up appearance; something she accentuates with red and black kohl, and painted lips. Her brows and lashes are well-kempt, her skin smooth and without blemishes. Her hair is jet-black, and typically worn in a loose knot at the back of her head, leaving several straight bangs to cleave past her left cheekbone. Her eyes are a dark hazel, hard and piercing.
She ought to be quite beautiful, but there's something off-putting about Reikuna. The hunch of her shoulders is too pronounced, her joints sharp, and posture more suited to a goblin or kobold than an adult human. Her movements are quick and deft, but verge on unnaturally-so, as though she were more guided by instinct than rational thought. There's a cruel curve to her lips and a coldly calculating look in her eyes, too; the mask of one who might delight in darker tastes. She just doesn't seem very... pleasant.
Reikuna tends to wear loose, flowing garments that allow for free movement and keep the body both cool, and sheltered from the sun. Sashed robes in red and blue are common, with wide sleeves ending at the elbows - keeping free her very well-formed, finely-calloused fingers. She is usually adorned with jewelry in a broadly 'ethnic' style; skull-shaped beads on leather thongs, animal teeth, semi-precious stones, and wooden carvings.
She is always barefoot, because shoes are for fools who believe they have an actual future.
Her feet do not smell.
History:
Reikuna was born at sea, the ill-conceived daughter of a pair of drunken sailors. Her father was a Calimshite noble 'slumming it' on the ocean, and had no interest in a lowborn child. Her mother, a native of far-flung Kara-Tur, at least attempted to raise her child with some form of education - which came courtesy of a life at sea trading, and an inbred superstition that demanded nigh-fanatical worship of Umberlee. It was Reikuna's mother who taught her to carve and whittle, then to manipulate wooden joints and string into exotic and grotesque puppetry.
Everything changed, as they say, when Reikuna was fourteen. Never taking particularly to the waves, she was given to doom-laden prophesy even at a young age, and felt all too keenly the ill winds blowing off the coast of Chult. Prayers to Umberlee were screamed, and some were heard, but nothing could repel the force bearing down upon the humble trading ship.
Timbers splintered and most were thrown overboard instantly, as a large black mass thrashed up from the ocean. Reikuna has later seen clearer visions that inform her memory, but at the time she saw only noise and heard only horror. Washed ashore on the jungle fringe, she was forced to survive, making her way to a village and setting up shop as a woodcarver and neophyte healer.
Several years later, Reikuna's relationship with Umberlee remained strained. Though her latent powers as a cleric - bequeathed by her late mother - were blossoming, she felt a tearing at her insides, a fragility of spirit that convinced her darker portents were yet to come. She was proven correct when she attempted to travel across the ocean, to Faerûn, ostensibly delivering a shipment of exotic goods (including her own macabre puppets and masks) but truthfully committed to relocate and make a new life in a more civilized land.
She arrived amidst another wreckage, but this time it seemed planned, determined, her body scooped up and deposited light as a feather to watch the ensuing chaos. Her people and her works would drown, once again, leaving Reikuna stranded on the coast of an entirely new land. She felt shunned, abandoned, deeply insulted, and driven to a long, deep sleep that night.
Assaulted by visions, Reikuna was shown the end of all things, and compelling whispers came in her slumber - telling her to abandon hope, and her old gods, that 'Dendar' would be the ultimate end.
Desperate and too easily driven to madness, the puppet mistress accepted what she saw and found herself consumed by a wild blast of lightning, awakening in a smouldering crater to find herself without the gifts of her faith. In utter despair, she fled into the wilderness without possessions, by hilarity and mishap ending up at an Abbey of the Yielding Way.
Reikuna spent a year training body and mind as a monk, never able to entirely quiet the vision-dreams, which came with increasing regularity until a fateful run-in with a clanless half-orc. Deep in meditation beneath a waterfall, a storm raining down, Reikuna was stirred by her dread god to follow an isolated path up the mountainside. There she found the halfbreed, warped in his delusions, and her own description of what followed must be heard to be believed; suffice to say, she was able to coerce Feng the Clanless from his wretched spiral. This was more than a sign. It was a calling.
They have wandered since, though much of the 'wandering' is driven to purpose by Reikuna, and her ever-building obsession with spreading the word of Dendar's manifestation. Feng may feel he has been saved, even healed, by the doom-bound cleric, but in truth he may border on being another of her queasy mannequins; cursed by his own fate, and clinging like a limpet to Reikuna's own.
She likes him, though. He's good company, fun to torment, and serves to assure her that her own path is just - or as just as any can be.
The woman's artisanal wealth affords their little band a measure of comfort off the road. It won't matter in the end, but for now there's a passable existence for two preaching zealots and a couple of pack animals (N.B. camels aren't people, Feng!) plying an honest trade and attempting to completely not save the world. It can't be saved... but perhaps it can be savoured?
Personality:
Reikuna is a hard woman, always ready with a cutting remark or putdown. Though fiercely loyal under the right conditions, she is friend to few, and generally pragmatic in her social approach. To friends she's equal parts frost and flame, perfectly willing to correct another's behaviour but also strangely fun and exciting to be around - if you can deal with the overt religious tendencies...
A zealot by any reasonable standard, Reikuna was once aligned to Umberlee but now a devout - if sardonic - worshipper of the Old God, Dendar. This is not only annoying under pressure - nobody wants to hear ecstatic prophesies of the end times when dealing with a mortal threat - but invades just about every conversation Reikuna is part of. If she has no better answer, she always has a fallback: "the end is nigh, didn't you know?"
Endlessly creative, Reikuna can be found whittling and shaping wood at any spare moment. It forms her meditation, and she frequently memorizes her prayers and communes with Dendar whilst 'working'. She is also passionate about designing her strange puppets, and often experiments with means of manipulation both physical and magical. She'll happily engage others regarding her craft, though as with everything else she takes a staunch theological standpoint when dissecting key concepts. While a passably-fascinating conversationalist, she's certainly no teacher. This doesn't stop her trying in the least.
When she's not being callous or overbearing, Reikuna is a sharp and witty companion, happy to share a flagon so long as you're willing to discuss the apocalypse. Her vindictive nature - bolstered by her faith - also makes her a stalwart aid in battle, or at the table for business deals and diplomatic negotiations. It's a shame she's such a bitch about the whole Dendar thing.
