Character Name: Nathaniel Rose
Character Level: 1
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Alignment: Neutral
Deity: None. All of Nathaniel's power is derived from the nature around him.
Size: Medium
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Dark brown
Height: 6'0
Weight: 180 lbs
Age: 20
Appearance: Nathaniel is tall and very fit. He has lived in the forest for the majority of his life and therefore has been able to maintain a shredded physique. He maintains a short haircut as well as a shaved face most of the time. He has an unemotional gaze for the most part and rarely smiles. He doesn't like looking people in the eyes.
History: Nathaniel Rose had an unforgiving childhood. His mother (Christine Rose) was captured by a group of bandits who held her captive in their camp for many years. She was abused, tortured and raped countless times and eventually became pregnant. She had the baby in the bandit camp and secretly gave the name Nathaniel to her son. She gave her own last name to him as she had no idea who the father was and really had no desire to know. Nathaniel was raised in terrible conditions by the bandits and was frequently abused along with his mother. About 5 years into his life, Nathaniel and his mother had found a way to escape the bandit camp but unfortunately the bandits had seen them escape and fired arrows which struck Nathaniel's mom fatally. Nathaniel was able to run away and escape and has been living on his own in the wilderness ever since. Because of his traumatic upbringing, he has experienced little to no social interaction and has found a love and passion for nature and animals/wildlife as these creatures are the only family he's ever really had and can remember other than his mother. Because of this, he is at one with nature and all sentinel animal life.
Personality: Nathaniel is an extreme introvert and actually has no idea of social interaction to begin with. He raised himself in the wilderness and can probably count the number of times he's interacted with other beings other than animals on one hand.
Ability Scores:
Strength: 12 (13 with race modifier) Dexterity: 13 (14 with race modifier) Constitution: 14 (15 with race modifier) Intelligence: 10 (11 with race modifier) Wisdom: 15 (16 with race modifier) Charisma: 8 (9 with race modifier)
Class : Druid
Class Options: Circle of the Moon (upon reaching level 2)
Skills : Animal Handling, Perception (I think I only get 2 at the start, right?)
Proficiencies: Light & Medium Armor, Shields, Clubs, Darts, Daggers, Javelins, Maces, Quarterstaffs, Scimitars, Sickles, Slings, Spears
Languages : English, Druidic
Background : Hermit, life of seclusion
Feats : If I get one at L1, I will choose Alert.
Gear : 2 daggers (dual wield), Leather Armor, Explorers Pack, Druidic Focus (a large Sabre tooth tiger tooth about the size of a human hand), Herbalism Kit, 50gp
Apologies if I missed something or if something is wrong! Let me know and I will correct anything if need be.
Thanks! Looking forward to starting a game!

Here's an image you can use for Nathaniel. Also - can you change the eye color I submitted earlier from brown to hazel (to match this image). Thanks!!

Hi Shaun!
Looks like a very cool character - just a couple things.
Hermit gives you Medicine and Religion, and unlike previous iterations of D&D that is likely to be all the skills you get proficiency in unless you go down some multiclassing routes. If you're happy with that, that's cool! Just thought I'd highlight it.
You also gain one more language of any kind that you'd like from your hermit background.
Lastly, the Hermit background gives you this feature:
"Discovery: The quiet seclusion of your extended hermitage gave you access to a unique and powerful discovery. The exact nature of this revelation depends on the nature of your seclusion. It might be a great truth about the cosmos, the deities, the powerful beings of the outer planes, or the forces of nature. It could be a site that no one else has ever seen. You might have uncovered a fact that has long been forgotten, or unearthed some relic of the past that could rewrite history. It might be information that would be damaging to the people who consigned you to exile, and hence the reason for your return to society. Work with your DM to determine the details of your discovery and its impact on the campaign."
I'm not going to make you determine what you want that discovery to be right now if you don't want to, but it could be worth giving it some thought and if you do have any ideas let me know.

Hi Kai, I’m glad you like him!
Regarding the Hermit background - do I have to actually select a background? I am very keen on my animal handling and perception skills and perhaps I could just be a Druid with a unique animal related background vs. a hermit? Animals raised him, cared for him as he grew up, etc. etc.
If I have to select a premade background then HermIt is fine with Medicine & Religion. Also if I have to be a hermit then I will choose Elven as my extra language and my discovery would be that I somehow found out that the bandit who killed my mother is now some well known world reknown leader of a huge evil organization that the party may or may not encounter and I am hellbent on getting my revenge.
Let me know!
One other quick question for you - once I get to level 2 and can use my wild shape, do I have to select the same beast each time I morph or can I morph into a different beast each time? (Keeping in mind the CR restriction and if I’ve actually seen the beast before of course)
Thanks! Shaun

Hi Shaun, You can get animal handling and perception from being a Druid, you get Medicine and Religion from your background - I just meant that it seemed as though you were expecting to get more skills later which is not necessarily the case, so if you wanted - say - survival and nature, you'd need to pick them up now. The hermit discovery is intended for more deep and philosophical truths - for instance, your connection with animals may mean that you understand that animals have their own deities separate and distinct from the Gods of Nature worshipped by most sentient races. Maybe consider the Outlander instead, if you don't want to play up the mystic angle of Hermit? dnd5e.wikidot.com/background:outlander then you'd be starting with Athletic, Animal Handling, Perception and Survival.

Hi Kai - thanks for your guidance, it's much appreciated!
I will go with the Outlander background and the 4 skills you mentioned as well. Love it. I will pass on the musical instrument proficiency - I could care less about that. If I have to have it then say a simple flute I made in the woods. Same with the outlander equipment - I will just use the Druid equipment I have listed above. I will however take the Wanderer feature (which is cool because it's kind of similar to the Nature skill without having to have it - right?)
Are you able to let me know about the Wild Shape question I asked before as well?
Thanks again for all of your help and patience with me as I get back into this!
Shaun
