History:
For much of her life, Dredka was just another orc in the east of Faerun. Brutish, hateful, raised to believe in the superiority of strength over all other things and in the superiority of the orcish people over all others. She was not an exception in those early days. She raided civilised settlements, killed innocent people, and crushed hope from the common folk.
Dredka lived under the rule of Kilro, leader of the Flesh Tearer clan. She was strong and vicious enough that she earned her place amongst the killing, and she loved nothing more than the blood and death that she inflicted upon those unfortunate souls who came to the Clan’s attention. Kilro was a devout Orc, and preached the word of Gruumsh relentlessly to his people.
It took a very long time for Dredka to question this, but eventually, she came to a realisation. Gruumsh and his pantheon were not benevolent to Orc-kind. They were slavers, tyrants. The driving demands they placed upon the orc people were the reason why they were forced into the endless cycle of blood and death that drove them.
Dredka was – and is – not a smart person, and she voiced this opinion. She and Kilro came to blows over it, and she was left for dead when the Clan moved on the next morning, suddenly and brutally left outcast from her people for daring to question their devotion to a God who cares nothing for them. She was only lucky that they merely broke her skull, rather than taking it with them and leaving the rest of her body behind.
Abandoned, Dredka was easy pickings for a band of slavers seeking strong backs to sell to Thay. Within that terrible city, Dredka underwent an awakening. Forced into the arena to fight for the entertainment of her magical Masters, Dredka came to see freedom as the most important aspect of life, and came to despise those who deprived others of their freedom – particularly those who did so through magical means, like Gods and the Red Wizards.
It is likely that Dredka would have eventually died in Thay, but for the timely intervention of a gang of adventurers from Waterdeep. They had been seeking to recover a lost artefact known as the Heart of Magic, which was rumoured to be sequestered somewhere in Thay. They were captured and thrown into the gladiatorial pits to die. There was something about their appearance which restored hope in the downtrodden Dredka, who used her knowledge of life in the Arena to help her allies escape in exchange for assistance in reaching Waterdeep.
It was not an easy journey, and it was as much by luck as skill that they managed the daring escape, but manage it they did. Now, Dredka finds herself in the City of Splendor, with the freedom that she has craved for so long.
Personality:
Dredka is angry.
For some people, anger is a passing thing; a transitory state brought on by some specific act.
For Dredka, it is a perpetual state. Dredka is angry at the Gods who have bound her people to barbarous desires. She is angry at the unjust state of the world, where the strong enslave the weak and casual cruelty is inflicted upon the undeserving.
Dredka’s anger is a sustaining force, but it is also a destructive one. She is rash and impulsive, rarely stopping to consider the long-term consequences of her actions. She resorts to violence too readily, and still has difficulty with the more nuanced aspects of law and civilised living. If she did not have her fury, she would have perished a dozen times over in her life – and indeed, her wrath has seen her live to a very respectable age for an orc, especially one who has lived such a brutal and bloody life to date.
What may be shocking to some is that Dredka does not feel too much guilt over the lives she ruined prior to her awakening. This is, again, self-preservation more than anything. She places the responsibility for that time on Gruumsh and Kilro, whose teachings had her believe that there was no other way of life.
She doesn’t seek atonement for that dark period of her life; she seeks vengeance. There are few more implacable foes of Gruumsh’s faithful than Dredka, and it is her dearest wish to find a way to climb into his realm and cast him down that she might free her people from the invisible chains which bind them.
