History:
The Exvandris family have been a proud family of the arcanely-gifted for as long as there has been recorded history. Due to the demand for their talents, they have spread far and wide across the continent of Faerun, and where there are institutions of arcane study, there is generally a branch of the family as well.
Xae’rilthas was born to Ilthas and Janya Exvandris, in the City of Waterdeep. Both were talented practitioners of the arcane arts, who teach still at the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors. What neither of them knew was that their bloodline had been blessed in ages long past with a union of the divine, and when young Xae was born, it was with that awakened spark of celestial heritage which set her apart from her peers and family.
Her parents being educated folk, and living in Waterdeep, there was little mystery as to what she was – and nor was this seen as an impediment to her education. She may well carry a spark of divine power, but she was still an Exvandris first and foremost, and her first priority was to master the arcane, not be distracted with something as trivial as her semi-divine nature.
But, as is the way of things, that heritage was still used as a weapon against her family. The Watchful Order had foiled the machinations of Halaster’s Heirs one too many times, and they enacted a dark ritual to corrupt that spark of light within Xae’rilthas and twist it into something evil and malevolent.
Perhaps they thought that doing so would make it easy to win her to their cause. In fact, when the young Aasimar’s transformation was complete, she was filled with a deep and intense loathing for the people who had enacted the rite upon her. Xae was not – and is not – defined by her race; she remained just as ferociously independent and dedicated to her studies as she ever had, refusing to allow the ‘illness’ which she blamed her very visible transformation on to interrupt her progress in any way.
She has trained and studied hard to obtain the power which she now wields – power which she commands as proficiently as any other in her line. She steps forth into the world wishing to find those responsible for the ritual which corrupted her, and to make her name as one of the greatest wizards of the age. Such is her birthright, and she will not be denied!
Personality:
Xae is driven by the belief that the only currency worth anything is knowledge – and that knowledge of the arcane is worth more than any other sort. She knows that the power she wields in the manipulation of the Weave is a privilege; but it is also one which she has worked hard to obtain and harder to hone.
Though there are a great many mysteries in the world, Xae has dedicated herself wholeheartedly to the study of magic. She finds it irksome that there are so many who learn a little, but focus on other, less refined arts – such as stabbing people with sharpened lengths of metal. She believes that control over magic is the most refined and worthwhile skill it is possible to develop, and that there is something a little distasteful about those who fail to do so when they have the aptitude for it.
She is also incredibly prideful, both because of her family line and ancestry – not the divine thing, that’s beside the point, but she’s very proud of being an Exvandris – and because of her abilities. Whilst she is aware that her studies will uncover a great deal more for her in the years to come, she is also not shy about the fact that she certainly has what it takes to be one of the greatest wizards of the age.
False modesty also infuriates her. Whilst she considers magic to be the highest of callings, she is even more irritated when people underplay their achievements in general. The world has enough mediocrity within it – it is the right and duty of those who are extraordinary to serve as inspiration for the common folk. This is about as noble as she gets; allowing others to be inspired by her glory and skill.
I did mention she is arrogant, right?
