History:
Ronna was born in Wellholm, a tiny village near Daggerford which was home to just over two dozen families. It was the kind of place where everyone knew everyone else, and everyone knew everyone’s business. In such a small town, it was perhaps unsurprising that Ronna’s business was of more interest to them than most.
Ronna’s mother, Gilda, was not married, and nobody in Wellspring knew Ronna’s father. When she was a younger woman, Gilda had headed to Waterdeep to make her fortune – much to the shock and scorn of the townsfolk. When she returned with Ronna, the scandal was enough to chase Ronna’s grandparents into an early grave – or so the townsfolk said.
As though the girl’s heritage was not enough of a cause of scandal and whispers, Ronna’s father had left a far more visible mark on her face – a purple tattoo which some gossipmongers were happy to rumour was a sign of some dark or infernal bargain, in spite of a complete lack of any evidence to support such a notion. Not that her mother ever discussed who her father actually was with her. She was constantly vague, saying only that he was a great and powerful man who the world needed elsewhere but who was, she was sure, going to return to them one day.
Needless to say, Ronna’s childhood was rather difficult. She made few friends in the village, and those who did risk the ire of their parents to befriend her had to do so in secret for fear of ostracization.
Ronna was nevertheless irrepressible in her outlook, and took the derision in her stride. She spent her days daydreaming about the man she believed her father to be, and learning to handle the forge that her grandparents had left her and her mother. Perhaps she would have lived her whole life in that tiny village, found a husband and settled down, but then the orcs came.
Wellholm was not a particularly important place, and it had little protection when Gruk’s Raiders came riding into town. They killed Mayor Joe, and demanded that the village hand over all its money and food or they’d kill the rest of them, too. They even strung the poor mayor up in the centre of town as a grizzly trophy.
Nobody dared to confront them. It’d take at least a day for the guards from Daggerford to make it to the village, and by then everyone would be dead. The terrified villagers prepared to hand over everything they had- and then Ronna stood before Gruk with a sword she’d forged with her own two hands, and a shield hastily made from an old cooking pot, and she challenged the huge orc to a duel.
Gruk couldn’t turn down such a challenge without looking weak to his boys, so he accepted, sure that he was going to take the embarrassment out on the young woman’s hide. As their blades clashed, though, Ronna’s tattoo began to glow, and as she focused on the battle, the tattoo guided her to perform incredible acts she had never dreamed of until that moment; and Gruk’s blows could find no purchase on her.
When the battle was over, Ronna had severed Gruk’s head from his body, and the stunned raiders were in total rout. She chased them from the village’s streets and her legend was born.
The villagers threw a party in her honour with what little they had, and Ronna finally understood that her father had indeed marked her out for something greater; she wasn’t supposed to be a smith, she was supposed to make the world a better place.
Where better to begin that journey than Waterdeep, the City of Splendors?
Personality:
Ronna is relentlessly upbeat and cheerful; her whole ethos is that life is there to be lived, and that people are – fundamentally – good. She feels a strong urging in her soul to make the world a better place; to give people the safety and security they need to be the best people that they can be. That said, she does not hesitate to stand up to bullies, and she will gladly put an end to the ‘monsters’ in the world that terrify and oppress the common folk, whether they be human or beast. She has no patience for those that would abuse their power or authority to make life miserable for others.
She is vaguely curious about who her father was, but perhaps surprisingly this is not something she actively seeks out more information on. She trusts her mother, and believes that her father – whoever he is – remains out there doing his own very important work. He gave her the power that she uses to perform incredible acts; she just trusts that he had her best interests at heart.
Ronna has very little interest in money, personal gain or even fame (though that last has already started to dog her footsteps). She is a dreamer, and she sees herself as a classic hero in the mould of Torm, The (popular image of the) Flaming Fist or the Harpers. In that sense, she’s somewhat naïve to the more self-serving nature of many ‘adventurers’ and sees herself as motivated by a higher calling; to do what is right, and just, and true to the people of Faerun.
Then again, she’s never had more than a few gold in her pocket at any one time, so who can tell how long that will last.
