So, you're eager to jump in and play with us. That's great! First up, what do you need?
Well, whilst there are plenty of resources out there to help you get started (including countless character generators, quickstart rules and so on) we highly recommend getting a copy of the D&D 5e Player's Guide. This includes everything you need to know to start playing the game. You don't need to read it all at once, but it will help you be able to find answers to many of your own questions!
The core 3 books are the Player's Guide, the DM's Guide and the Monster Manual. These alone will provide enough content for you to have a ton of fun. All the other expansions which have come since are great, but if you want to play and run threads here, those three are the core you will need for your experience.
To roll dice you can just use a little bit of code in your posts. For instance, if I want to roll a d20 and add four to it, I would put in uV7etwyL1d20+4
In a useful format, that's [*roll=1d20+4] without the *. You should be able to roll all the dice you need that way!1d20+4
