It smarted, but Solstice had endured worse injuries in her time as Mielikki's champion. She refrained from spending valuable time on healing a small burn, at least for now and instead tapped into her firbolg heritage. Disappearing from view, she circled the being and lashed out with her sword when the timing felt right. It would break her invisibility, but that wasn't long-lasting anyway. The point was to hopefully catch it off-guard enough to hurt it some more.
(Using Hidden Step: As a bonus action, turn invisible until the start of your next turn, you attack, deal damage, or force a saving throw once per short rest.)

The blade flashes through the orb, and there's a second scream like the burning of an ancient forest. The blade doesn't seem to have so much success this time; despite the palpable hit, executed as well at it could possibly be executed against a foe with no obvious physiology, without the magic augmenting the strike, it felt as though she were carving her blade through nothing more substantial than the air itself.
The creature lashed back with a tendril of flame this time, extending itself towards her in a sinuous strike that aimed to coil about her midriff and burn through her armour.

That noticeable difference in effect from her smite-augmented strike provoked a frustrated growl from Solstice. She had no more uses of it left, and for a moment regretted speaking with the crow instead of preserving her spells for more urgent needs. But there was nothing to be done about it now, and it wasn't as though she hadn't affected the creature at all. When it lashed out, she fell back into a defensive position and raised her shield. The action spared her, as the tendril of flame failed to reach her this time. Thank Mielikki, and her instructor's emphasis on defensive techniques.
Eyes narrowing, she swings her blade to strike again. If she had to spend time whittling this thing down as though she were a carver and it a plank of wood, so be it.

This time, the fire warped and twisted, pulling itself away from the blade before Solstice's weapon could touch it.
A second bonfire erupted beneath Solstice's feet, however; the creature apparently intent on roasting her alive, whether with itself, or with its command of incinerating flames, lighting up the night in a cascade of unnatural fire.

"Damn you--" Solstice glared as her swing went wide, thanks to the fire's surprising nimbleness. She gritted her teeth, preparing for another swing when the bonfire erupted beneath her feet. "It'll take more than that to get me, you piece of shite!" Though less nimble, she still attempted to leap out of the way before those flames singed her, before bringing her blade in for another strike. There was nothing for it but to keep fighting and hope that she could wear it down through attrition, before it did the same to her.

Solstice's bladework was on point - fantastically elegant, easily chasing and carving into the creature, if creature it was, over and over again. If she was fighting any mortal beast, surely it would be staggered and stunned merely by the wonder of her artistry with the blade; certainly, the few guards who had not yet fled the area were duly impressed.
It, however, was not. The strange, roaring-flame noise of its screaming filled the space with every slash and stab of steel through its immaterial form, but it did not fall. It did, however, unleash a second blast of flame from the slashed section of itself, and a third bonfire followed in the trail of the Paladin, slowly surrounding itself entirely with a nexus of unnatural fire.

The firbolg was a little frustrated that her sword-work didn't meet with better results, but told herself that this is why she came to Waterdeep; to seek greater challenges. Certainly this fiery monstrosity qualified! Its retaliation only steeled her resolve and she continued to shout at it even as she tried to escape its wrath. Stepping out of the bonfire, she raised her voice once more at the hostile being.
"You just don't give up, do you? Well, neither do I!"

(I'm going to assume that you also move out of the bonfire ) The orb seemed almost to swell in response to the berating from Solstice. Then, the flames it had conjured around it all suddenly snapped out. The world was filled with a bitter, frigid cold, and the orb grew brighter and brighter. So bright, in fact, that her sword went wide, failing to find the flame itself amidst the cold white light. Bitter frost began to grow over her clothing, steaming her breath in the cold night air. Oh, that cold was a nasty trick. Solstice supposed she deserved it, for continually mouthing off at the aberration before her, though she got some amount of satisfaction from getting a response out of it regardless. If that meant she was getting under its 'skin', she would take it even if she got a little dinged up in the process. But the firbolg woman didn't appreciate that bitter cold being responsible for her swing going wide, and tried to make up for it with the viciousness of her next stroke.

The orb shuddered after the strike; a surreal motion of rippling light shimmering across its exterior as the sword passes through it again. Whether or not it understood Solstice's words, it was clearly capable of understanding on some level, because it did not sit idle and continue to attempt to burn the powerful Paladin after slugging things out for so long.
Instead, it began to float upwards - moving rapidly to attempt to escape Solstice's wrath.
(The orb ascends 20 feet directly upwards - Solstice can take a shot at it as it flies out of her reach)

"And just where are you going?!?" Solstice glares at the orb, its attempt to escape provoking a surge of temper. She hadn't waited all day to fight this thing just so that it could up and leave! Furiously, she swung out with her blade and hoped for at least one more good strike before being forced to chuck javelins instead. She raised her voice, unsure if the guards could hear her with the distance and sounds of combat, but giving it a try anyway.
"If any of you lot are archers, have at it!" She still planned to claim the bulk of its attention, assuming fleeing entirely wasn't its intention or if it couldn't succeed. But she wasn't so prideful that some side help would be unwelcomed...just as long as they maintained their distance. Solstice only had so much healing to go around, and she had a feeling she might still need at a portion of it.

The guards, unfortunately, do not move to assist - either too stunned, poorly armed, or scared to intervene in the clearly magical and unnerving duel. Even for guards who spent a fair few nights putting down the undead, this was a display which had them cowed. Zombies and skeletons? They knew how to deal with those. Those were little more than shambling corpses; a nuisance to be put down like dangerous vermin. This thing? They had no frame of reference at all for that.
Hovering outside of her reach, now, the orb was beginning to glow brighter and brighter, no longer just orange flame, but flickering to a shining white, and then traceries of brilliant blue flame lick across its edges. It seemed to be compressing in on itself...
