Crispin indeed wasn't terribly surprised to find the door locked... given how promising it looked, he wouldn't have expected anything else. Promising, but... yes, there was a real possibility for it to hold something deadly within as well. Sure, he had been laughing at that imagery of death out there mere moments ago, but if he didn't laugh, well, he didn't really want to consider the alternative.
Not that a locked door ever stopped him for long, really, and he looked over appreciatively at Kieran as he slipped out his own set of thieves' tools as well. "Well, four hands are better than two, aren't they? Let's see if we can work this out... Though if there truly are any lions in there, I'd imagine they'd be rather hungry at this point… or perhaps, with any luck, they've all eaten each other or starved..." What else would happen with a room full of ravenous beasts, after all? Not that he particularly wanted to meet whichever one was strongest of them all, that didn't sound too promising, either.

Sister Valerie laughed uproariously at Warden’s words, and clapped the Tiefling on the shoulder. “You’re not wrong!” She said, brightly. “I doubt the fearsome reputation of this place is entirely unwarranted. It’s just a matter of how they do it! I mean, what’s to say that the real danger here isn’t just that the doors lock behind us and we run out of food? That’d be a devious trap indeed!”
It’d be a disturbing thought, if she didn’t sound as though she were making a joke. She didn’t truly think that the Blue Alley would have such a dire reputation if there weren’t something more dangerous than lack of resources here.
She worked out of Downshadow; she knew for a fact that Waterdeep held many dangerous creatures and bizarre magical threats hidden within its shadows. Still, she couldn’t feel any fear over it. She had Tyr, and an array of impressive companions, by her side!

For all that Val spoke in a joking manner, Warden temporarily grew grim at the thought of starvation being their true fate in the alley. She knew what it was to go hungry, and it was nothing she wanted to revisit, let alone see it befall the others. But so little information has been brought to light about the Blue Alley that it's certainly possible. Unlikely, but possible.
Shaking off that dreadful thought, Warden approaches the door just as Crispin succeeds in picking the lock. That prompts a small smile from the tiefling, nodding in approval. "Good work, both of you. Now, let's see what's inside." She was itching for that herself, but a sense of fair play prompted her to gesture to those who had opened it.
The stone walls of this room had been whitewashed and painted with images of treasure chests of varying sizes. The pictured chests were all open, revealing rows of sharp teeth. Inscribed on the west wall were the words, "THIS TOOL WITH". Against the southern wall sat a reinforced wooden chest. The lid was closed, but it appeared to have no lock.

Stephen waited for the door to be opened. He could have picked the lock (probably), but he preffered to keep an eye and ear out for unwanted visitors. From within his coat he retrieved a small lump of white chalk, which he used to make a small "x" the left wall of the hallway. One more, an "o" this time, was placed beside the door. "I don't know if anyone else here has anything to mark with. At least one of us should though. X goes on the left wall as we walk deeper. You want to leave? Just keep them on your right and you should find your way home. The O is for any door we have shown interest in". He put the chalk away, just as the door opened with a soft click, and he followed the group inside.
The interior of the room was unexpected. He looked at the depictions of chests with teeth. His gaze quickly found the real chest, with no lock, sitting on the opposite side of the room.
"Clearly a trap". He unslung his bow and drew an arrow, aiming for the chest. "Unless anyone is foolish enough to disagree?"

"N' one's starvin' on m' watch."Kieran grunted, no less a stranger to hunger than Warden, no less a stranger to doing without. He shook his head and huffed stray pale hair from his face while Crispin worked alongside himself and Miri, everyone's hands together in solving a puzzle. It was a strange room that greeted them: treasure chests painted on the wall, all of them with the same kind of sharp teeth as the predators that had decorated the door. Violet gaze drifted over the words inscribed on the western wall, arching a slim, white eyebrow as he looked to see if there was at all a tool below the words. He didn't see one, but moving over toward the written-on wall, the half-drow was careful not to get near the chest. He nodded at Stephen, gesturing with a waggle of lithe fingers and the wave of a calloused palm that the others should search with him. "It's gotta be some kinda trap, yeah. I'm not gonna argue that at all. Either that chest or somethin' else in th; room. Let's not open it until we've searched a bit: this tool with. What can that mean? Any ideas?"Running hands and a more careful visual search over the western wall, he hoped to find a few more clues: ktAjnJj91d20+4((Perception for Kieran ... oh, look ... more crappy rolls. The next door, Miri noted absently, was not locked. She heard Crispin unlock the door behind her, and she wandered back, peering into the room long enough to see the walls and chest, then hanging back in the hall.
“This tool with,” Miri murmured aloud. The teeth were - ominous.
Kieran was focused on the walls, the others on the chest. Miri leaned back into the room, just inside the door way, and looked up - perhaps there were be a clue on the ceiling?

"This tool with... with what? With a lot of effectiveness, I'd hope. With a sharp end? With a killing force, perhaps!"
Crispin also gave that chest a skeptical stare, eyes narrowed at it as if it were alive. He looked from the chest to the paintings on the wall, then back to the chest. Yes, there was a very good chance the thing was very much alive-ish, enough that they'd have to be ready for a fight if they were to disturb it. Hmmm. For now, he casually stepped around the room, taking it all in quietly, as he continued musing over that phrase. He stood beside the paintings on the wall, eyeing them closely.
"Perhaps that clue provides some means to disable that trap..." But of course, he wanted to make sure there was nothing they'd missed on the walls before trying anything, since it might provide more insight into what they'd be up against. So he looked over the painted areas in particular, while Kieran checked the area of that phrase, Miri looked upward and Stephen kept focused on the chest itself. They seemed to have the room well covered, at least.

Further investigation of the western wall didn't yield any new insights, only the three-word inscription. Warden paused by Kieran to take it in, and wrinkled her nose. "Fuck if I know. Sorry, I'm no good at puzzles. Got any paper to do a rubbing with, or at least copy the words down?" She didn't have any herself, but then she expected to be smiting creatures in alley, not taking notes.
The room wasn't a large one, rather small in fact, so it was easy for a group of this size to fill it out. Even if no one come close enough to the chest to touch it, that was enough to trigger something. It was Miri, focused on the ceiling, who would realize that it began to move...just before it dropped down. The creature opened its mouth wide to reveal razor-sharp teeth, lashing out with a pseudopod at Miri.
