The eastern door didn't budge under Kieran's efforts, holding firm. The northern door, on the other hand, wasn't locked or otherwise an obstacle. He'd failed to spot any traps, but fortunately there were none to trigger. That door opened to another hallway, and a set of stairs heading down. Warden, watching Kieran, just sighed. "Why force yourself to be the battering ram when you have me with you? I'll deal with the door, you stealthier ones have a look ahead if you want. Just don't get into trouble without me."

If Miri felt any regret or remorse, in the moments between pressing the button and the gentle click of the opening door, it showed not even the slightest in her expression or posture. If anything, she looked – ever so slightly – disappointed when the door to the secret passage swung inward.
“Who knows?” Miri said, cheerfully, in response to Kieran and Warden. “This passage could hold the secret to those, uh, death traps over there,” she gestured with her chin back towards the lightning and the spikes.
Still grinning, utterly uncowed by any of their adventures to date, Miri made her way along the corridor, and into worn-but-luxurious room, glancing around curiously. This time, she kept one of her short swords out and in hand, fully intending not to be caught unaware yet again.
Miri bumped past Kieran on her way to the northern door, catching him off guard and quite possibly distracting him from his attempts at investigation.
“I wouldn’t mind watching you take the door out,” Miri said, cheerfully, to Warden, her eyes lingering on the tiefling just a moment too long, just long enough to give something other than a friendly edge to the comment. “But I suppose we can leave you to it, as long as you come and catch up quickly.”
Miri slipped out the northern door, and made her way towards the stairs, glancing around.

All was quiet, according to Miri's senses. Nothing particularly good (secret doors?) or bad (traps) stood out; the hallway seemed just that, though it curved out of sight past the stairs. Said stairs were plain and uncovered, no signs of glue or any other substance on them. Warden narrowed her eyes at the door, then backed up before making a run at the door, hoping to slam into it hard enough to jar it open. If she couldn't do it, then likely no one else here stood a shot without thieves' tools or such. Athletics: 4ri18gva1d20+5"Ow, fuck--" Warden slammed into the door with a loud thump and a wince, as her efforts failed to do anything but ensure she'd have a bruise later. She scowled at the door as though it had personally insulted her by not yielding and backed up. "Damn it all. Fine, someone pick the damn lock, I guess that's the only way we're going to stand a chance with it."

"Be sure to let us know if there's any death traps down there!" Crispin called out, on seeing the stairs headed downward. They didn't look particularly threatening, but around here, that could be the surest sign that they were filled with some non-obvious bit of trouble. As interested as he was by whatever might be down that way, he knew he ought to give a crack at the other door, since it looked like brute force wouldn't budge it. That was totally fine by him, brute force was never his talent anyway.
He got his thieves's tools out, nodding toward Warden. "It was still worth a shot. But now I've really got to wonder what's behind here! Only one way to find out..." Hopefully. He eyed the lock and then set to work, positioning and adjusting the tools just so, in order to try and get that lock to give in...

With Crispin's expertise -and a bit of pure luck- the lock was easily picked. Once it was disabled, the door swung open to reveal a solid bronze statue of a wizard, with the name 'Keilier' on the statue's base and several broken vials lying on the floor. On the wall is a phrase scrawled in Common: "Utter madness. PURE RUBBISH!" Warden, coming up behind Crispin, narrowed her eyes at the statue. "...Keilier?" The eyes of the statue have evidently been enchanted to follow others around and they did so now. The wizard's haughty voice could be heard aloud by all. "That's my name, don't wear it out! Hmph. At the very least you could bother to be entertaining. Do you have a riddle for me?" 3personal5me 1d4qyy2tjCc

Stephen eyed the statue warily, before turning his gaze to the phrase on the wall."A riddle? I have a feeling it wants something in particular". He stood before the statue, eyes locked on its. "This tool with a soft touch can do what might and strength cannot".

"The answer, of course, is a 'key'." A wand then appeared at the foot of the statue (which anyone who attempted to touch would learn that it was surrounded by some kind of magical force), constructed from many low-quality emeralds that have been fused together. Inscribed along the edge, in a mix of abyssal and draconic, is the phrase: "All that is yours is mine and what is mine cannot be hidden." sojourn

T he half-drow had felt like thus far, the entire alley was one dangerous tease, and while a bit of not-so-accidental firting and the thrill of combat adrenaline sure did go a long damn way in the form of sustenance, Kieran was beginning to wonder if there was even a golden unicorn to be found. He chuckled at Warden, making a show of stepping back with a wave of his hands to make room for her, "It's true. You've got th' harder head an' a nice set 'f horns." It was with familiarity that he risked his humor with the tiefling, the edges of his violet eyes crinkling just so with the warmth of his teasing grin before he couldn't help but nearly giggle a little when even her strength wasn't enough, "I'm beginnin' t' doubt this place has an end."He chose to follow Miri to keep looking ahead, however, leaving the door breaking or the lock-picking to those who'd proven themselves to have more talent, wanting to make sure that their coast was clear. Surprised and yet not surprised to see a set of stairs where he might have expected a hallway, the half-drow pressed himself toward the darkness along the wall and carefully descended the stairs to peer around the corner so Miri and himself could bring a report back to the others, making a point to brush past the human with a hum.

The hall was lined with more potential entrances to more potential rooms, none of them glaring and obvious as their goal, and Kieran shrugged, hooking a thumb back over a tattooed shoulder and beginning to make his way to the stairs to return to the rest of their ragtag group, "We prob'ly should see what's down here with everyone else. Wonder 'f someone finally got th' door open 'r not."It was the sound of a voice he didn't recognizing drifting from where the others were that made him pick up his pace up the stairs and back into the room, noting that not only had the door been opened, but the conceited asshat of a mage who'd invented this place had made a statue of himself. Having missed the flutter of excitement and riddles, he was only in time to see the thing spit out a wand-like thing and declare it a key, "Because we need another one 'f those. M'haps they'll all have use down th' hall—it's full o' doors." 1d20+4

Kieran would hear no movement or any other suspicious noise, though he would pick up on the faint scent of ash coming from behind one of the rooms, on the left.
"Mirt better be generous for putting up with this shit. We deserve some hazard pay." Warden muttered, her pride more wounded than her shoulder, and she stepped back, raising an eyebrow at the sudden prize revealed. The arcane wasn't a studied topic, and she wasn't terribly interested in an item that wasn't going to directly help her in a fight. "A 'key', huh? Well, someone take it with us. I'm not a wand person myself, as you might expect, so I leave it up to the rest of you."
She headed over to Kieran, clapping a hand onto his shoulder, silently grateful that nothing happened to him and Miri while they were briefly separated. "Good to know, the damn unicorn has to be behind one of them. Let's find out which." The tiefling woman wasn't long on patience but had vast amounts of stubbornness and that's what kept her going now. She wasn't about to let this place get in the way of her goal, especially when the upcoming funds could do a lot of good in the right hands.

Stephen took a half step back when the wand appeared, more cautionary than startled. "We keep finding keys, but none have worked on any locks we have found. This is getting annoying". He knelt beside the wand to study it, careful to keep his hands far from it. "I don't know much about magic, and I'm not saying it's cursed. But I would prefer someone else carry this". He wasn't going to take any chances with the arcane; not unless he had to.

Miri glanced at the doors, longingly, and then grinned at Kieran. “Yeah, yeah, all right,” she followed Kieran back up the stairs, whistling at the sight of the odd looking statue and the delightful, expensive looking wand of emeralds it had spat out at the them.
“What do you think it says?” Miri asked, curiously. Warden and Stephen both fled at the sight of the thing, but Miri shrugged and knelt next to it, squinting at the wand. If she didn’t see anything immediately worrying, or any obvious reasons not to do so, she’d go ahead and try to pick it up.

Miri's trained gazed did not detect anything suspicious or alarming about the wand itself. And when she picked up the item, nothing happened. The wand remained as it was, gaudy and undoubtedly magical in some way. Without a spell to determine such, only time and some bonding would tell its exact nature.
Warden waited long enough for her to pick it up, then headed down the stairs to have a look at the hallway for herself. She glanced around, then back at anyone who came along. "Nearest door is on the right. Let's have a look then, shall we?"
She paused, peering upward and narrowing her eyes at the phrase above the room. “TAKE ONLY WHAT YOU CAN TRULY AFFORD.”
"...another test? Figures."
The tiefling rolled her eyes and moved to open the door, not stopping to think about whether it might be trapped this time. Fortunately, it wasn't.
This room beyond was filled to the brim with coins of all types. At a glance, the party could easily guess that thousands of gold pieces are scattered across the room. Kieran and Stephen, the most observant members, realize that the coins are arranged in such a way that the stacks spell out the words "ALL FAKE".
(Anyone else can make a Perception/Investigation roll to notice the same.)

It seemed they at least had made some use out of those cryptic little phrases scattered throughout the various rooms. The wand sure did look quite valuable, and undoubtedly it had power of some sort. Crispin looked at it, intrigued, but his attention was also caught by mention of the doors and more places yet ahead to explore. They'd gathered enough keys that surely some would be of use, somehow. So once he was certain they'd gotten what they needed, and it seemed Miri was going to hold onto it, he headed over to see what was happening with the other doors.
The coins admittedly brought a gleam to his eyes, but he was also suspicious enough not to take them for what they were, especially given the way things have gone throughout the course of this exploration. The moment they touched the coins, something awful or at least inconvenient was bound to happen. "What kind of trap do you think is set up in here?"

Miri waited a moment, holding the wand, head tilting slightly to the side. Then she grinned, pleased, and shoved it comfortably into a pocket, following Warden down the hall. “No idea what it does,” she said, cheerfully. “It must do something though, right?” Miri followed Warden into the next room, eyes wide. “Oh, well,” Miri shifted casually from foot to foot, carefully locking her hands behind her back. “It must be a trap, right?” She did her best not to ease backwards towards any of the stacks, thumbs hooked into her belt loops, fingers twitching faintly, and glanced around as well.
Miri squinted at the coins. "All fake," she said aloud. "They're arranged - all fake," She sighed, audibly disappointed. "... so do you think that means we can take them...?"

"Take only what you can afford... Surely not literal". Stephen was maintaining a healthy distance from the gold for now, in case there was a simpler and more explosive trick to the room. His eyes flicked to Miris hands, catching the subtle twitch. He continued speaking, addressing nobody in particular "Though I would advise against taking any. I would guess there is something buried underneath the faux-gold". While it was possible that the entire room was simply a test of ones self control, he had a sneaking suspicion that there was more to the room.
