The dock ward was home to many warehouses. Some were large enough to house whole ships worth of cargo inside, busy and bustling at all hours; they were crammed full of people, with boxes and bags moving in and out constantly.
Others were small and quiet, tucked away on mostly deserted streets or with their entrances halfway down quiet alley. Some of those were legitimate, like storage spaces for companies that they wanted to keep less accessible to the public, maybe for reasons of secrecy and security which were separate from the law.
And the rest? Well, there were plenty of those in Waterdeep who felt that out of sight meant out of mind, particularly for the guards.
The warehouse that Alitranna had patiently scoped out of was one of those. It presented a large front to one street on its north side, pressed up against a neighboring building on the east, led along an alley on the west, and had a small strip of land between it and the next building to the south. Careful observation would have told her the warehouse had three entrances – a main door on the street on the north side, a side door in the alley on the west side, and a window overlooking a narrow strip between the warehouse and the building opposite it on the south side. The alley could be accessed from this or the neighboring street.
A single guard patrolled the outside, walking along the north side, down the alley to just peek in at the southern window, then back up the alley and along the north side of the building again. This one had just come on duty; he wore a chain shirt and carried a spear in one hand and a shield in the other, looking alert and attentive as he made his rounds.
