Kara was armorless, and she couldn’t get out of the way of the huge weapon in time, or bring her glaive around to deflect it. The axe hit with all the strength she could have imagined, cleaving into her.
Luckily for Kara, her training held. Cold cleansing fury was pulsing in the veins, filling her. She wasn’t afraid anymore, and she was too focused to even think of all the things she knew Gulken to be capable of. The rush of strength restored to her muscles helped as well; it was almost as if she hadn’t felt the blow.
Kara twisted and struck again, sweeping the blade of the glaive across in a vicious cut and then reserving the direction to strike again with the butt of the weapon.

Staggering back a pace, Gulken was beaten and battered by the onslaught of attacks. For the first time, there was a glimmer of something like respect in that piggish gaze. Blood flowed freely from an open gash on his chest; even if he survived this, now, there would be a new scar across his torso.
But still he stood. Not quite at the limit of his strength, he shook his head, and drew the axe back once more.
"Not bad, for a human." He spat, "But your resistance is as pointless as the walls which your people cower behind. This world is ruled by strength!"
And to prove his point, he brought the blade down with shocking force, intent on finishing what he had started so many years ago.

The axe hit her again. Perhaps Gulken was weakening; perhaps it was just luck. For all his snarling about his strength and the strength of his people, Kara barely felt the blow.
There was only cold fury in Kara’s gaze. Nothing Gulken said or did, no threats or reminders could make her afraid now. There was the two of them, and the fight; all that history culminated in this moment, his strength against hers.
Gulken had ripped out eyes, consigned people to the flames, overseen as Kara - and thousands of others - were enslaved and tortured. Kara would bear the scars of his treatment on her wrists and ankles forever.
But Kara had done something much more difficult than all that torture: she had survived it.
The glaive Ironfist had given her felt like a feather in her arms. Kara pressed forward through Gulken’s strike as if the axe wasn’t even there and swung again, throwing everything she had into the sharp slice of the blade and another vicious clout with the butt.

And once again, Kara did not triumph because she was a superlative warrior, or because she had some divine destiny to bring down this monster. Kara triumphed because she was a survivor. She weathered the storm of steel, and answered with her own in kind.
The blade crossed once more across Gulken's chest, and he was already falling back when the pommel of the glaive hammered him forcefully into the ground. For all his might and fury, for all the backing of his dark power, for all the lives he had taken - in the end, he had only succeeded in forging the weapon of his own destruction.
Each blow he had dealt her had tempered her resolve, and the ringing impacts of the emotional pain he had caused meant that when he tried to bring her down with mere physical attacks, she was more than ready for them. There was nothing else he could do to her. He had already done his worst, before the fight even began.

Gulken fell.
Kara drove the butt of the glaive home. She pulled back, waiting. He didn’t move. Her breath rasped in her ears; her mouth was paper dry.
Better safe than sorry, Kara thought, the first words to cross her mind as the cold focus of her rage started to recede. She spun the glaive, stepped forward, and dragged the blade across the soft skin of his throat. A little blood spurted out - not much, not with his heart having already stopped beating.
Kara felt the blows now; blood was trickling down her skin, and the two wounds throbbed. She rested the butt of her glaive against the ground, gripping the shaft tightly and leaning against it, still staring at the monster on the ground, the creature who had killed so many of those she loved. She thought of watching him drag Hana to the flames.
Kara thought of all the things she could do to his corpse. She could spit on him, rip out his remaining eye, burn him to ashes. But - Gulken was dead now. He would never harm another soul. And in the end Kara had seen him for what he was: an overconfident bully.
Kara turned and walked away, resheathing her glaive as she went, and left Gulken behind her on the ground. Nothing had changed, not really. The Sundabar that had been was still gone. Hana and Ironfist and all the rest were still dead. But Kara had met a monster from her nightmares and learned that in the end, he was less than she. Perhaps he had never really been a threat to Waterdeep, weak as he was. Perhaps he had had some plan to topple the city. It didn’t matter anymore.
Kara crossed the threshold back into Waterdeep and stopped, watching the bustling life before her, letting the sights and sounds wash over her. And she smiled.
