The rat-man hissed and spat, lips curled in a vicious snarl as it raised its sword once more. Startled that the prey hadn't gone down as swiftly as it would have liked, it was still nevertheless unwilling to back down just yet - even with the blows dealt, it didn't look as badly injured as one might have hoped for such clean strikes.
Stabbing forward, it aimed to bury its sword in Thedithas' gut, before snapping out with its jaws to bite the elf's shoulder!

The relatively narrow ledge does not provide much room for inspired footwork, but Thedithas finds enough space to plant a foot and pivot just enough to avoid the incoming blade, with the added bonus of taking his shoulder out of range of the filthy maw. In the next moment he pivots forward again and delivers another pounding blow with his staff, followed by another fist to the thing's ribcage.

Slashing and stabbing at the rats as they swarm into his space, Gorian has managed to skewer a couple of the little rodents but that doesn't seem to have been sufficient to warn them off. Indeed, they seem to have entered into a kind of frenzy, and the chittering is only getting louder, filling the cavernous space...
... but it does seem like, well, the sound of rats. Not a sound that is too unusual, and one it is difficult to imagine echoing up through all the stone and into the city above.
Nevertheless, the frenzied animals are still a hazard, and make a spirited attempt to devour the rogue!

As Nolul, misses his first strike, he watches Gorian being overwhelmed by the rats. Quickly he cast healing word, towards Gorian to close his recent wounds.

Gorien growls in pain as the rats bite and scratch at him, and he gives a swift "thanks!" at Nolul before he drops his hand crossbow on the ground and draws a dagger to swipe at the rat horde with

A shortsword and dagger are not, traditionally, weapons of choice when it comes to pest control. The relatively small surface area of the blades make it difficult to maximize the damage to large swarms of rodents, and by most common wisdom it should be impossible to kill more than, perhaps, a rat per second - in which time most unfortunate souls in Gorian's condition would have found themselves reduced to so much flesh-stripped skeleton.
Gorian, however, proved to be quite adept at dealing with the creatures. As Nolul's staff cleared a rat from his eyes, he became not so much a man, as a whirling blender of razor-sharp steel which the rats had - quite unknowingly - walked themselves into. By the time he ceased moving, there were no more rats, just a fine patina of red liquid and scraps of fur drifting to the ground.
The rat-man, however, was just looking angrier by the moment. Its blade flashed and parried, its teeth bared in an ugly snarl, and in a sudden swirl of motion, it leapt backwards, away from Thedidas - and as it did, its body twisted, its gear melting into its form as it turned into a single enormous rat, making to dive into the water.
((The rat-man changes shape and attempts to dive into the water - Thedidas can make an attack of opportunity as it flees as it is not trying to disengage. If it is not instantly killed it will make it into the water and a perception check will be necessary to track its movement in the water))

(Crucible would very much like to help this group, though I'm not sure how one would find a warforged in the sewers. Let me know if I should drop in whenever and handwave, or if I should wait)

Sensing a lapse in his opponent's defense, Thedithas whips out the leading edge of his quarterstaff and attempts to catch the retreating creature behind its knee.

The large sewer rat hisses in pain as the staff cracks against its hindquarters, but it still manages to drop into the murky depths below...
(Perception checks DC 10 to spot the rat in the water if people want to spot and make ranged attacks against it - Crucible I'm afraid I don't really want to bring in extra characters for this one now that we're halfway through; there's a thread in the RP Discussion forum with two other adventure ideas you could sign up for though!)

As Gorian massacres the rats, Nolul seeing the job almost finish turns towards the fight between the elf and the ratmen.
With hesitation in the ratmen eyes, Nolul, sees him transform and jump to the muddy water. To help track him Nolul quickly cast Faerie fire in the location where ratmen jumped.

The giant rat is illuminated by Nolul's spell, outlined clearly through the murky water with a flickering silhouette of blue-green light. It is currently thirty feet away from Thedithas, and will make it around the bend the rat swarm had come from in just a few more seconds!
(No longer need to make perception checks to target the rat!)

Thedithas watches the rat skitter away as it becomes illuminated by Nolul's arcane energies. He quickly assesses his options and whispers a fortifying prayer to Lathander as he stows his quarterstaff, then takes off running after the retreating foe. His speed proves to be faster, and at the last moment he dives off the ledge and into the flowing muck of the sewer channel, attempting to wrap his arms around the rat.

With all the speed of a slippery, greased sewer rat, the creature squirms free of Thedithas' grip - popping up and out of the water and his grasp for a moment, the creature is alight with that flickering blue flame!
