Huh.
Sin followed Gigi's explanation along, nodding her head at appropriate intervals. It was a strange concept to her that healers needed licenses to heal; even stranger that one might be labeled a criminal for doing Nature's will. Guild of Apothecaries? She furrowed her brows and took another long drink, nursing her confusion quietly. She did not want to seem ignorant with more questions; her uncouth inquiry had warranted Gigi some overly curious looks and the pink-haired woman was obviously not a fan of that. The wood elf stiffened some as Gigi moved, and she scooted herself closer to Stephen, though she wasn't exactly sure why. Protective aura, maybe? She sniffed lightly, and cocked her head with a slight nose wrinkle. Copper, earth, smoke. Very heavy and unexpected really, but it as Sin watched how Gigi moved, it seemed to grace her perfectly.
At the doctor's lingering comment, Sin arched a delicate brow.
"Wealth...it is different from where I come from," she said carefully, looking back and forth between Stephen and Gigi. "Appearances are nothing compared to actions." After setting her drink back down, Sin lazily gathered her long hair over one shoulder so she could play with the feathers braided into it. "Why are you here, Gigi?" It was ten seconds of quiet before Sin sensed that was a vague question. Clearing her throat, she clarified further. "Or, I guess I mean, why do you...stay in Waterdeep if it is not splendid?"

Stephen nursed his drink as Gigi shrugged off his question. He didn't mind. Not all secrets were supposed to be exposed. His eyebrow did arch, however, when the feintest green light appeared in her eyes. Curious.
He knew nothing of magic. He preferred to work with the mundane. Needless to say, he didn't know what to think of the occurrence. Another secret he would let be.
Sins question seemed a good one. He too was curious why she stuck around. Surely she could move on, find work somewhere else, or even just go straight. He wondered why she didn't.

It was a stupid question not worth answering. Obviously because it was raining out. She hadn't planned on eating out tonight, much less getting stuck inside due to a sudden downpour. Taking another sip of ale and pairing it with her stew she ignored the vagueness and focused on eating. Been while since she'd had fish like this, wasn't half bad. Then Sin had to go and clarify her question. Why are you here? As in Waterdeep. Her spoon didn't miss a beat of moving from bowl to mouth even as the prodding question forced a face to the surface of her mind. A younger girl, silvered blonde hair, silver blue eyes, tall lanky frame that had just the budding development of cusping into teenager-ness. Perfectly sculpted eyebrows, dainty nose, clear complexion - she'd grow up into a gorgeous woman no doubt. She was wearing a light robe in pale silver and curled her bare toes in the moon's shade of the manicured garden that was their backyard. Everything was perfect here. The lawn. The roses. The sculptures. The water fountains. Stone paths. The two girls standing in the lawn near the back fence. Pristine and perfect - the talk of the noble district no doubt. No candles glowed from within the tall slotted windows. Mother was at a Gala while Father was no doubt with a colleague elsewhere. Servants had been sent home for the evening so as to not disturb the rest of those still inside.
"Where's Gabe?"
"He had to go with Father, learn 'how to be a man and run the business' sorta thing I think."
"And Mother didn't want you with her at the party? You're 15th birthday is coming up, no doubt she wants to start having you meet with suitors."
The younger shuffled her foot a bit, looking down at the ground, mouth trembling.
"I just... I knew you'd be leaving soon. Tonight, or later this week, I wasn't sure... But like... I could tell... A cleric?! So I said I wasn't feeling well."
"Gwen..." A blonde young woman, older then Gwen, with a knapsack over her shoulder and a sling bandage to both hide and support a strange metal arm hugged her sister tightly with one arm. Emotion ruled the younger Gigi's voice, throat catching, eyes stinging.
"Just, don't leave-leave. Please Georgina? Even if you can't come back like I want you too. Pl... please. I need to know I can still see my sister."
"I won't. I promise I won't." "Can't earn coin like you can out of the big cities. Farmer's don't pay shit for healing services, tonics, or whatnot. City people have money." Her bowl was almost empty by this point, the warmth from it improving her mood slightly. She had been rather hungry and the filling content of the stew chased away some of the chill she'd caught from the rain. "Same can be asked about you. You look leagues away from home." She turned the tables on Sin and stared at her with an unemotional side glance.

The wood elf scratched at her knee while she pondered over Gigi's words. Home. She wondered if there was rain where they camped this night, imagined what it smelled like with the wet woods and grass. A gloomy shiver pressed at the base of her spine and Sin gave a half-shrug.
"I have much to learn before I am value to my pack," she said, matter-of-fact. Her pride still stung from the rejection she'd been given, but for now, Sin pushed that from her mind. "Many people come to the city, all walks of life. I will do many people this way." She wondered if that made sense how she'd said it. "That is to say, only outsider experiences will shape me into who I need to be."
Feeling as though she was oversharing this time, the druid looked back to Stephen.
"I guess you are in Waterdeep for the same reason?"

Stephen only had a little difficulty understanding the wood elf. Her handle on Common was good, but far from fluent. Nevertheless, he nodded along as she spoke. He arched his eyebrow, however, when she asked why he was there.
"No, I'm born and raised here in Waterdeep. The only home I've ever had. Maybe that's why I like to protect it".

She studied Sin a bit more, water glass now being brought closer instead of the pint glass, considering and weighing what Sin's just said. If she was here, and her family elsewhere (there was no other way to look at it. Obviously the elf belonged in the woods, not here in a tavern), then the most obvious events to have transpired?
"You got kicked outta home then I take it." It was more a statement then a question. She'd seen a lot of kids to young adults out on the streets, booted for a variety of reasons. Being different, injured, disgrace. It varied, but didn't make it less painful. The worst reasons were being simply unwanted anymore. "They don't deserve you back then, if that is the case. You shouldn't have to earn your place just to stay family. Pull your weight, sure, but not base value."
Stephen sounded like he had a better run growing up. Protecting something meant you valued it.

It was hard for her to fathom someone staying in a single place for all their life, but she tried to imagine what sort of advantage that would give someone. Domestication was a taboo to those of her circle, and the very idea both amused and frightened her. Sin wanted to ask him more, but she hadn't the faintest idea where to begin.
"Born here?" Sin's voice was full of wonderment. "Lived here and only here?" Her brows furrowed. "Is your family here, too, then? A spouse? A child? Brother? Sister? Parents?" As the questions tumbled out, Sin was blissfully unaware of how rude the inquiries might have seemed, and how her lack of manners would be taken. "Or does this city also protect you?"
Her line of questioning was interrupted quite suddenly at Gigi's comment, and Sin's face noticeably fell. She had not quite mentally healed from experience that had influenced her departure, and Sin was caught off-guard with this stranger's statement. She narrowed her violet eyes and her nostrils flared briefly. This one speaks arrogantly.
"I chose to leave," Sin said tersely. "If I am to someday lead and advise, I must have more than just my pride and intent."
Taking another drink, the wood elf stared at her tankard a moment before looking from Stephen to Gigi again.
"They would welcome me back if I wished to return. We may be primal, but my circle is not a savage people." Her eyes looked over Gigi again, the arm, the hair, her basic aesthetic. The abrasiveness of the woman was perhaps due to being treated as a criminal, but Sin sensed there was something much deeper. "Where is your family, doctor?"

"Born and raised. My parents disappeared when I was young. It drove me to be an investigator". He didn't normally share so much. The ale must be strong tonight. "I was an only child. I never married, and have no children". He spoke almost like he was citing the facts about a criminal. No emotional investment, just detached observation.
"I'm sure you have your own reasons for being here". He shot a look at Gigi that he hoped conveyed the message of "shut up".

S norting into her water glass Gigi wrinkled her nose and muttered into the glass, "6 foot underground in the City of the Dead." It was a phrase that indicated or alluded to death, no doubt about that. It seemed Gigi was perfectly fine with letting others assume she was on her own. Setting the glass down she happened to catch Stephen's eye, message loud and clear with no subtleness whatsoever. She gave him a flat look in return, clearly conveying her own thoughts on the request, and proceeded to keep talking. He wasn't her father. "Glad to hear it then." A dry comment to her statement of being welcomed back home. "And never called you savage..., down girl." It was insulting and supportive at the same time. Gigi really did have a way with words. The strangest thing about her was that, she really, really, was glad to hear it. Kids not being able to get back home was her biggest irritation and source of consistent reasons why she smoked on a daily basis. And meditated. And smoked while meditating, of a sort. Incense could have a similar effect if you knew what to buy.
