Poison damage to Kara: IWII08eW3d6
As Kara's strike against the creature attacking Solstice hits home, the firbolg herself was emboldened to unleash an attack of her own. She glared at the nasty, voracious creature and stabbed straight ahead, hoping to pierce its maw from the inside.

If anything, the worm seemed almost angrier now. It lunged forward to bite Kara; she dodged at the last moment, only for the stinger to slam straight into her with vicious force. Kara gritted her teeth, clenching her jaw tight through the pain, not only of the stinger itself but of what felt like poison being pumped into her veins, just as painful as the attack itself.
Kara wrenched herself away, never hesitating, and spun to slash at the creature attacking Solstice, taking advantage of its focus on the giant-kin to slice it with her glaive.
She turned, leaving it to Solstice, and focused her attention back on the worm attacking her, spinning the glaive to strike it again, and again, and again.

That stinger attack was the last that purple wormling ever made. The repeated glaive strikes were too much for it, despite that fighting spirit, and as blood oozed out of freshly-gained wounds, it shuddered and collapsed. One menace was no more, at least.
As for the other one, it moved away from Solstice since none of its attacks seemed to deal any damage, and lunged for Kara instead. Once again, she was face-to-face with a fanged a gaping maw, and a stinger ready to strike.

Solstice, seeing it go for her companion, is the one to move in and retaliate this time. Or at least, she'll damn well try to divert its attention back to her better-defended self. (Though Kara was dishing out way more than she'd received, a fact which the firbolg readily admired.)

The first worm fell. Kara had moved the moment it was down, shifting to trap the second one between herself and Solstice, putting them on opposite sides of the creatures.
The second worm whirled and attacked her. Kara dodged the mouth, blocking the blow from the stinger with the shaft of her blade, holding the creature’s attention as Solstice slammed into it from behind with her blade.
Kara didn’t hesitate, lunging in to deal another three strikes.

That second wormling, between Kara's and Solstice's blows, was badly hurting now. It writhed in pain, bleeding from its many wounds, but like its fallen brethren seemed to prefer going down fighting. After recoiling from all the blows, it lunges in to snap its jaws at Kara, driven by an unrelenting appetite. Its stinger saw use as well, lashing out at a leg.

Seeing that stinger pierce Kara, Solstice narrowed her eyes at the creature and swung her blade in a high arc, eager to end the life of the dim-witted and vicious wormling. Kara's presence made it easier to get a clear shot, with the badly wounded but still fighting wormling cornered. It shouldn't be long now, she hoped.

The second worm spun, lashing out with the same vicious anger that the first had displayed; it went for Kara, latching onto her first with its teeth, then plunging the stinger into her. Kara shook it off; this time, at least, there was no sting of poison sweeping through her.
There was no more time to play around. Kara focused her attention on the battle, clearing her mind of the pain from the strikes she’d suffered. The rest of the world slid away, leaving only the fight. Her mind newly clear, she slashed at the worm once more.

As the other wormling fell, Solstice straightened and set down her shield momentarily to wipe her blade down before re-sheathing it. Heading over to Kara, she flashed a lopsided smile.
"Nasty things, weren't they? I'm glad we haven't met their mother, if she's still around." Gods, Solstice hoped that state of affairs would continue. She could easily see how an adult version would give them serious trouble. The firbolg paused to eye Kara critically, noting those wounds. She expected resistance the moment she spoke again, but that wouldn't stop her from voicing concerns.
"How about we find a safer spot to rest before pushing on? It seems we could both use a bit of that. A nook in the main cavern ought to do it, aye?"

The worm collapsed almost immediately. Kara exhaled, relieved, and straightened up, slowly, letting the battle focus fade.
Once she could, Kara examined herself, carefully. She had a wound from the stinger on one arm which throbbed, painfully, with the lingering effects of the poison. Her other forearm had a mark from the second creature’s bite. There was another wound in her leg, where the second creature had stung her, although this one was less painful.
Kara cleaned her blade as well, taking a few moments to breathe through the pain. It faded; she didn’t feel as good as she had before the fight, but she thought she could keep going.
Kara looked at Solstice, and gave a slow shake of her head at the thought of meeting their mother.
A safe spot to rest? Kara clenched her jaw slightly. She didn’t need to rest; she was fine. Did Solstice need to rest? She had taken some damage in their last fight, but Kara didn’t think the worms had touched her. Perhaps it was her way of letting Kara save face. It was tempting to refuse; she didn't need to rest. On the other hand, Fluffers had (perhaps) been down here two weeks already. A few more hours wouldn't hurt. And her arm really did hurt.
Kara nodded in agreement, accepting Solstice's plan. She followed the other woman back out into the main cavern, looking for a spot against the wall, not too far from the three tunnels, where they could rest with some security. She would, Kara decided, prod the wall a bit before they sat under it to check for things that might want to drop down on them.
"Watches?" Kara asked. She didn't think they'd need more than an hour to rest, but perhaps it was best to alternate resting with holding watch, even if it meant taking longer. The last thing she wanted was to be surprised by another cavern dwelller.

Some of Solstice's motivation was indeed letting Kara save face; those wounds seemed painful and not insignificant. If they were to face any more dangers from below, those needed some tending and a bit of time. There was also the fact that Solstice realized she ought to conserve what divine healing remained to her, just in case Kara fell in battle. At this rate, who knew what else they might find? If Kara refused, she was nonetheless prepared to cast at least one healing spell on behalf of her friend, but that nod was met with a relieved smile. That the human woman wasn't so stubborn that she couldn't see reason raised Solstice's already considerable estimation of her.
Finding a nook to rest in wasn't difficult, fortunately, and testing the immediate area around them revealed no hidden creatures ready to strike. Solstice nodded to the suggestion of watches, thinking along the same lines. Since the area seemed to be a crossroads, she didn't entirely trust that they would be left undisturbed for any significant length of time. She was starting to think that if a cat had survived down here, it was either very skilled or very lucky...perhaps both.
"Fine by me, but I'll take the first one. Don't forget the tin of cookies, if you're hungry." She set down Mrs. Mossrun's tin prominently, encouraging a snack break as well. Why not? Afterward, she settled back in and paid special attention to the ceiling as well as the extra tunnels unexplored. If anything else dwelt within, she wanted to be ready for it.

Kara hesitated. She was fine, she could – After a moment, she nodded again, accepting Solstice’s offer, and settled back against the wall, sitting slowly. She crossed her legs, glaive resting across her lap, one hand lightly held on the shaft of it. The spot where she’d been poisoned throbbed, her other arm and leg hurt as well, and Kara really did want to rest. She closed her eyes, slowly, trusting Solstice to have the watch. She nodded faintly at Solstice’s mention of cookies, but didn’t move to take one; the creature’s poison had left her nauseous, and Kara didn’t think she could manage it yet. It couldn’t have been said that Kara slept, but her breathing remained even and steady. There was too much about them for her mind to be empty, so instead she focused on a picture, a memory. They were underground, and it brought back quite a bit of Sundabar, of her mentor Captain Ironfist and her friend Dardahr Greyhelm, and the rest of the Undercity. There were more and less pleasant memories there, but Kara managed to find one she liked: the evening she’d spent with Ironfist shortly before officially becoming a guard, when she’d coughed over a pipe while Ironfist, laughing, taught her to smoke it and to exhale the smoke in big round rings that puffed off through the air. There had been a fire, crackling and comfortable, hearty dwarven food, and Kara had known in her heart that Ironfist was proud of her. Even with everything that had come afterwards, it was a happy memory; the warm glow of that remembered night wasn't diminished by that which had happened. Hit die 1: U6n7p5Ut1d12+3 Hit die 2: 1d12+3
Hit die 3: 1d12+3After some time, Kara opened her eyes. Her body felt whole and strong; the wounds on her arms and leg had faded to a dull memory of pain, no more than that. She reached for the tin of cookies, opening it, and ate one with her usual deep enjoyment, drinking some of her water as well. Only then did she rise, glaive in hand, moving it from hand to hand to stretch her arms, back and legs. She stepped forward and nodded to Solstice, giving her companion the chance for her own rest, if she needed it.
