Kara squinted, frowning at the tunnel beyond the branching, trying her best to see clearly.
Her gaze flicked up – in time to see the creature, but not in time to do anything about it. A thing dropped down from the ceiling to land on Solstice, covering her head and smothering her.
Kara didn’t hesitate. When had she ever?
She spun her glaive, using the sharp blade to cut at the creature, taking advantage of its brief moment of distraction. Then she struck it, swinging her momentum into two quick strikes with the blade, and finishing with a heavy scrape of the butt, attacking along the bits of the creature where she woudn’t risk hitting Solstice.

Kara's glaive attacks are very effective, as it turns out. The creature's thick hide has some protection, but the human woman's skill with her weapon gives her enough momentum to keep those blows striking true. When she pulls her weapon back, it's slick with dark blood. However, the creature is not about to surrender despite the stiff resistance and despite the blood shed, it still has enough energy to keep going. It squeezes Solstice, and she lets out a muffled cry that its brute strength plus acidic underside provokes.

The thing bled, but it wasn’t enough. Kara lunged in as it struck at Solstice, swiping at it again with a vicious swing of her blade. Next, she thought to try something else; Kara reached up and shoved at the creature, using her hands to try and knock it off Solstice with all her strength.
It worked; the creature was shoved off of her ally. Kara didn’t hesitate to keep attacking; she spun the glaive again, using all her strength and experience to build her momentum back up, and swung again at the creature, once with the blade and again with the butt of the weapon.

The trapper attempted to keep its hold on Solstice, but with the strength of Kara's shove, it couldn't hold on despite its efforts. The manta creature slid off the firbolg woman, provoking a sharp intake of breath as Solstice could finally breathe again. She never thought the air of an underground tunnel would be so sweet. But there was no real time to enjoy it, not when that hostile ceiling fixture was still alive and moving. Unsheathing her blade, she grunts and retaliates with a strike.

The trapper, significantly more wounded after Kara's next blows and Solstice's smiting, recoiled and a tremble spread throughout its strange body. More blood oozed onto the floor of the cavern, forming a small pool beneath. It attempts to move away and blend back into its surroundings, hoping to catch them by surprise again.

Solstice charged forward with her sword, hitting the creature with a heavy blow. It started to retreat back, pulling away from Kara - but not cautiously enough. Kara whirled and drove the blade of her glaive down at the creature, stopping its retreat in its tracks.
Kara attacked, slashing the creature twice more with the blade, and bringing the heavy butt of the weapon straight down onto the thing. The thought of it creeping back into the dirt, following them, waiting for another chance to suffocate them both - this was no time for mercy.

As the creature that attempted to smother her is brought to a standstill thanks to Kara's actions, Solstice grins and closes in with stained blade ready. Between the two of them -and especially Kara, what a warrior- it wasn't going to escape. Her Sylvan accent is just a touch thicker, her voice low and dangerous, matching the glint in her eyes. She wasn't sure it could understand, but that doesn't really matter. Talking to her opponents is standard practice for the chatty firbolg. "Oh no, you don't. You're going to pay for that, beastie."

It's still alive...somehow, though the wounds and blood pooling below have significantly increased. Perhaps it senses that it won't be able to escape, which might explain why when Solstice closes in again, it leaps and wraps itself around her again. One more smothering attempt, for old time's sake?

Solstice tries to yell, but her voice is soon muffled again as it envelops her, holding on tight. If it's not going to survive, then it doesn't seem to want to let her have that either. 1d20

If an odd flat ooze could be vicious, Kara thought, this one was. It had attempted to flee and failed; now it went after Solstice again. Kara swung, hard, fully intending to slice her glaive through the creature yet again. She didn’t hesitate. It was bleeding, and badly. It was a small creature. How much more could it take?
Her first attack hit, hard. She saw the creature squirm and weaken, as if on the edge of death. Kara didn't hesitate; she spun again and lifted the glaive. The weapon sung in her hands; it was a moment of perfect union between them, and she hit at just the right angle to slice the thing nearly in half. It loosed its grip on Solstice and tumbled to the ground. Kara didn't hesitate, putting two more strikes into it - just to be safe. By the end it was a mass of harmless flesh and deep black blood.
Kara exhaled, slowly, chest rising and falling just a little hard from the exertion. She rested the butt of her glaive on the ground and stared down at the creature, then looked up at Solstice with a faint nod, raising her eyebrows as if to ask if the giant-kin was well.

As the creature slid off Solstice, she gulped for air and prepared to exact revenge...but Kara beat her to the punch. She barely had time to swing before her companion sliced it nearly in half and came to a halt, eyebrows raised as it was obliterated by the glaive. Overkill? Maybe, but it was amazing to watch and after two attacks on her person, Solstice wasn't feeling sorry for the strange creature. She paused to catch her breath, and took a moment to heal some of those acid burns on her face and neck with divine energy. Nearly completely healed now, she nodded at Kara with proud smile.
"Better now, though I should hold back the smiting unless we're really in need of it, from now on. My thanks for that, you were a force of nature just when I needed it!" She kicks what's left of it with a boot before wiping down her blade, sheathing it and picking up her fallen lantern. "That blended in rather well, didn't it? We'll have to keep an eye out for anything clinging to the ceiling, just in case there are more of them." That thought provoked a grimace; she didn't enjoy being caught off-guard to that extent, but who does?

Kara watched as Solstice healed her own wounds before Kara’s eyes, as easily as she had ever seen anyone heal. It was – impressive. Solstice had held her own well enough in the fight; she had been surprised, and a bit slow to throw the creature off, but she had never hesitated to strike.
Kara glanced down at her weapon with a grimace. That thing had burned Solstice’s face with acid; she didn’t want its blood on her glaive. She set the weapon down, stripped off her tunic, and ripped off a piece of the black shirt below, using it to clean the blade of her glaive with quick, practiced motions, then crumpled it up and left it with the creature’s corpse. If the blood was dangerous, better not to keep it next to her skin. She left the ripped shirt on, and pulling the tunic back on over it.
Kara looked up at the ceiling when Solstice mentioned that there might be more of those things. She hadn’t responded to Solstice’s force of nature comment; it was a new description, but she never paid much attention to such compliments. Kara knew fully well who she was and what she could do. But the thought of more such creatures made the skin on her neck crawl again, and Kara nodded.
Kara was quiet, thinking. She peered down the corridor, then, slowly, turned back to Solstice. If Fluffers had come this way – she doubted he would have survived that… thing. Something that would take on one of Solstice’s size would easily swallow up a cat, even one that Mrs. Mossrun had described as large.
Should they search the tunnel for his body? If they found it, what hope would they even have of knowing? Better to take the optimistic route.
Kara turned to the smooth side of the tunnel. She went back to the tunnel they’d come from, scratching a hatch to guide them home, then stepped forward towards the smooth tunnel. Once far enough along that her path was clear, she glanced back over her shoulder at Solstice, expecting her to raise a protest if she didn’t agree about where to go next.

Solstice had a little more energy she could devote to healing herself entirely, but it occurred to her that their now-dead sparring partner was a taste of things to come. And some of those things might be venomous; in that case, it was best to have a one-shot means of curing that rather than letting her indulge come to bite them later. As Kara wiped down her glaive, Solstice looked over her armor, but the burning acid's contact had been brief enough that it hadn't affected more than her skin. Lucky, that.
She followed Kara's gaze and eyed the corridor with similar skepticism. Maybe, if the creature hadn't been lurking there for who knows how long, the cat could have passed through unharmed. If they had no other options, then perhaps Solstice would have pressured to move onward...to find Mrs. Mossrun some closure, if nothing else. However, the large tunnel still went on a way, so she saw no reason to argue for that outcome. She nodded when Kara glanced her way, silently agreeing as she soon closed the distance between them with her long stride.
The tunnel curved again, sloping downwards, and Solstice raised her fortunately unharmed lantern for some better deal. She raised her eyebrows when it became apparent that the tunnel of the burrowing creature had ended, meeting a dark cavern that stretched on beyond her line of sight. Other tunnels, of a similar size and shape, were evident along the length of it. Yet all was quiet for the moment and she didn't hear movement indicative of whatever had made this honeycomb of tunnels.
Turning to Kara, the firbolg quirked an eyebrow. "It seems more a crossroads than a lair, doesn't it? I can't tell how old it is, but I don't hear anything. You check the ground for tracks and I'll keep my eyes on the ceiling for anything from above?"

They went further down, further and further. Kara felt a distinct sense of unease. Outside of the pool of light cast by Solstice they were nearly blind; it wasn’t hard to imagine that the creatures that made their home in such a place weren’t.
Kara exhaled at the entrance to the cavern, looking at Solstice, then back at the massive empty space. Too big; it was too big. If Fluffers had gotten lost down here… what chance did they have? On the other hand, Kara reminded herself, a small tunnel would have almost inevitably led to the cat’s body. Here – maybe – there was a chance.
Kara nodded. She swept the ground with her eyes, looking for tracks – ideally more of Fluffers’, but really any clue as to what might be ahead would be welcome.
