Caim was not having a good day. He would make it close to the stairwell, although, realistically, not close enough that Pailash and Solstice would be able to hear him on the floor above. His attempt at getting their attention would really only result in another massive coughing fit, wracking his entire body. The puppy writhed and whimpered in his arms, not very soothed by Caim’s clutching grasp or pained whimpers. It made another attempt to bite at him with its little razor sharp teeth... but fortunately for Caim, it would miss this time, ripping at the cloak he'd wrapped around his arm but not doing any damage to the skin underneath. It whimpered and wriggled again, still trying to get loose, but sort of calming as nothing bad happened while Caim held it.
Solstice would overcome her coughing fit and, for once, both she and Pailash would find themselves able to breathe. Ember had clearly indicated which door held, behind it, the smell of something human which had (very) recently peed.
The only challenge now was getting the door open. One of Pailash's fireballs seemed to hit solidly and squarely, flickering out against the door without doing much damage. Both of the others seemed to glance off it, leaving a very closed-looking door.
((No animal handling check needed for Caim this round! Just the usual con save, please)).

Recovering her breathing, Solstice steadies herself and flashes a smile at the gnome woman to reassure her that she was alright again for the time being. Her companion had given it a good try, now it was her own turn to break down the barrier in their path. "Listen for the tiefling lad, alright? He's taken a while." Eyeing the obstacle, Solstice backs up and raises her voice so hopefully the person within can hear.
"If you can hear me, get away from the door!" She can't pick locks, but she can do her damnedest to break that door down with sheer force of muscle. There aren't any other options available, at least not for herself. So, she charges and slams into it with all her might. Hopefully, her voice would at least alert the person within that there were people willing to help, if that wasn't enough on its own.

He should really have learned better by now about shouting too much in this smoke-filled place. Caim stumbled to a halt as he got a lungful of soot and ash, leaning against the wall by the entrance of the stairwell as he choked and coughed. He cursed softly as he got his throat cleared, slipping into Infernal just for the moment. The clergy at the temple had always given him such unhappy looks when he'd said anything of the sort in Common.
The puppy teethed at his arm, but at least he couldn't feel it through the fabric wrapping. He'd worry about the torn and doubtlessly singed cloak later.

Pailash shrugged her shoulders, "I haven't heard him for ages!" She confirmed, cheerfully, "He's probably passed out, I guess, but I'm not going back down there to find out. I can't exactly drag him out!"
Ember scurried back up to hide in the folds of Pailash's robes, and she eyed the door, waiting. If it gave way, she'd follow into the room - if it didn't, she'd add a firebolt to the effort to destroy the barrier.

With all the force of her mighty smiting – and, perhaps, thanks to Pailash’s more meager fireball a few moments earlier – the door would splinter and crack open, bits of wood flying back into the room and the majority hanging limply from the frame, dropping periodically to the ground. Pailash would make it into the room. Lying on the floor in the smoke-filled room, close to the bed, was a small human girl, dressed in a plain pink nightgown (slightly damp) – unmoving. The room itself was bare, with a single bed close to the wall, big enough for the slender mother and her small girl to share, a table on the right with a little mended-looking chair pushed against it, and a low stool with what looked like a basket of sewing next to it on the left. There was a small chest next to the bed on the back wall. The room had two windows, one off to the left that led into a narrow alley between this building and the next, and another one above the bed, slightly open, with smoke steadily seeping out. Unfortunately, before she could get any closer, Pailash – like Solstice – would be wracked with yet another painful coughing fit. Down below, Caim would notice the puppy stopped wriggling at his muttered curse in infernal. As he kept coughing, a moment later, he’d feel a new sort of wriggling, followed by an unusually rough tongue – with a distinct brimstone smell – lapping at his face in a way that was clearly trying to (although failing to) be helpful. Unfortunately, the force of his continued coughing would really start to hurt his lungs; he was breathing in too much smoke. Just as unfortunately for the three intrepid rescuers, the fire wasn’t waiting for their lungs to clear.

Both Pailash and Solstice would find themselves able to breathe once more, Pailash in the room with the too-still little girl, and Solstice just outside, able to see her lying on the ground. Once the coughing stopped, and they were able to look more closely, they would see that she was breathing, chest slowly rising and falling beneath her nightie.
Caim, unfortunately, was still unable to catch his breath. The puppy in his arms whined and smushed its slightly warm but still damp nose against his face, licking again as if, somehow, that might help. It wriggled in his arms, as if trying to convey some kind of message? Its weight would be enough to force him down, just a little, closer to the floor, although once Caim was doubled over the puppy wouldn't try to escape.

Solstice decided to not waste any further time and enters the room, opening the window above the bed all the way. She stuck her head out briefly to have a look, though given the amount of smoke exiting, she could hardly say it was a reprieve. After that, she reached down into her pack and secured a grappling hook attached to a rope on the windowsill. She could probably climb down well enough on her own, but with an unconscious child and potentially others to carry? No, she was taking no chances. She then scooped up the girl, who probably weighed less than the combined contents of Solstice's backpack. Glancing back with a worried frown, she raised her voice to hopefully be heard over the crackle of the flames and creaks of the burning house. That was always a risk to her lungs, but she'd become worried for the tiefling who still had yet to show himself.
"Tiefling? If you can hear me, hurry up! I have to get her out, but I'll come back if I must."

The tiefling in question was currently having a real bad time. Just down the stairwell, he hunched over against the wall, unable to catch a clear breath in the thick smoke. If the woman's shouting could even be heard over the roar of the fire from a floor away, he certainly couldn't hear it over his own coughing. Distantly, he recognized that the puppy had stopped biting at him in favor of licking his face, but it was hard to appreciate while choking. Crouching low to the floor, he tried to keep a grip on the wriggling little dog without squeeing too tight and hurting it -- if it ran off somewhere in a panic, he wasn't sure he'd be able to keep up.

(Before I post, now that Pailash has seen a lot of the building, can I make a check to figure out the likely origin point of the fire?)
