Caim would find that the coughing eased, leaving a persistent tickle in this throat and a sense of a near miss.
With the help of Pailash’s flame control, she and Solstice would make it through the fire unscathed - but Solstice would get a deep lungful of smoke, leaving her coughing and gasping in the middle of the third floor.
All three would hear a loud deep groan from what sounded like the upper right corner of the house - very loud for Pailash and Solstice, and a little quieter for Caim, but still audible over hiss and crackle of the flames. That would be followed by a low, loud crack, and loud thuds and crashing sounds.
Only Caim would hear a faint high yelping, coming, as far as he could tell, from the behind the upper right (closed) door on the second floor.
((Note: Solstice can put Pailash down while coughing without costing either of them an action, if she wants - but picking Pailash back up later will be another action. No other movements or actions for Solstice this turn.
Maps stay the same, except for the fire square that Pailash removed.))

Oh, that stung. Solstice inhaled at the wrong moment, and all she could manage was doubling over and gasping for breath. That stung a lot, leaving her eyes watering and lungs in agony. She desperately wanted to move, especially after hearing that groan and crack which meant their window of opportunity was rapidly diminishing, but the intensity was too much to fight, at least in that moment. She could only hope for a second wind sooner than later, knowing the others couldn't haul her away as she could them. They would have to leave her behind, no question.
Breathe. Just breathe....

Caim was just catching his breath again and starting to push forward towards the stairs when a loud series of cracks and bangs cut through the roar of the fire. He froze, as if sure the floor beneath him would be falling in on itself next, but everything seemed sturdy enough for the moment and his tenseness eased up slightly.
He wasn't imagining it, right? He could swear he'd heard a voice crying out beyond the fire taking up most of the hall. Were the others okay? How far had they gotten on the next floor up, were they caught in that? Was that one of them? He hesitated just briefly, glancing towards the stairs, before hurrying past towards the flames beyond. Whoever that was, they needed help. Hopefully the others could take care of themselves in the meantime.
He pressed close to the wall that wasn't completely engulfed in flames, trying to keep to that thin still-clear path. The door ahead where it'd seemed the sound had come from was still closed, and with a hand over his mouth to block out the smoke he murmured his cantrip again to throw the door open while it was still a fair distance away.
Provided nothing happened, he'd press forward to lean through the open doorway, scanning whatever mess was inside for signs of life. "Hello?" he called out over the crackling fire.

Pailash gestured behind her to extinguish the second rank of fire between Solstice, herself, and egress. It seemed doubtful to her that she was going to be able to maintain a clear exit for any appreciable length of time, but it was better than nothing - if nothing else, it might slow the continued rush of the inferno at least enough for the firefighters to arrive before the entire building was engulfed in flame. Besides, continually running her mind through the practiced formulae was a great way of distracting her from how overwhelmingly stupid she'd been to jump into the building like this.
From inside her robes, a tiny weasel emerged, and she ushered it down the corridor. "Search for people, Ember. Go on."
And in the next moment, she was pulling open the door closest to her, leaving the big woman to catch her breath. "YOO-HOO!" She shouted at the top of her lungs, "ANY TERRIFIED CHILDREN IN HERE? HELLOOOOOO?"

Solstice would find her breath returning despite the exertion. Perhaps it was Pailash's calming of the fire immediately behind them, but she would be able to breathe normally again, despite the thick, heavy, miserable smoke on the third floor. Pailash would see nothing in the room whose door she had opened, except for a few scattered belongings on the floor and a messy bedroll spread out in the middle of the room. Luckily for her, the room wasn't on fire, and no flames would leap out at her when she opened the door. Unfortunately for her, it seemed yelling loudly was a bad idea; Pailash would breath in a heavy lungful of smoke, and find herself lost in coughing once more. Ember would have better luck; there were no sounds of crying to be heard, but the weasel would smell urine, fairly fresh, coming from the door behind them, the leftmost door on the back wall. Caim's luck would hold this time; no flames leapt out to join the inferno when he opened the door. It would be clear that the roof had dropped down from above; this room was small, with just a bed and a table, along with a fresh heap of burning debris from the floor above, piled in the middle of the room. The source of the whimpering would be immediately obvious. There was a small black puppy lying on the ground next to the huddled wood and fire, whimpering pathetically, one leg crooked out at an awkward angle. It was a small, sweet looking dog, despite a few too many oddly sharp teeth, and a reddish glow that seemed to start under its chin and trail down to its stomach. Second Floor: Third Floor:

A moment to steady herself, and Solstice was able to breathe again without coughing up a storm. Her lungs still ached, and remaining in the smoke-filled building certainly didn't help, but she told herself that was all the more reason to see this end sooner than later. If the girl was still alive, they were very close. The gnome's renewed coughing fit had her wince in sympathy, but there wasn't much she could do about it except give her a moment to catch her breath.
"Hold on, lass. We're almost done...." Not seeing anyone in the room Pailash had just opened to, Solstice decided to check the opposite door to see if it was unoccupied as well. It hadn't escaped her that the tiefling boy hadn't reached them yet, so she told herself if he didn't appear by the time she'd checked the next door over -if necessary- that she would head back downstairs for him. By now, even she was getting worried about how much they were pushing their luck. If they lingered too much longer, it was bound to leave them. She wasn't a paladin of Tymora, either, so the goddess didn't owe her any special attention. "Hello? Anyone here? Speak up, we've not much time!"

Scanning the room, Caim almost thought he must have imagined the sound when he saw no humanoid figures anywhere within. The mess of burning wood was distracting, and a more horrifying alternative was that whoever had yelped was buried in the tangle of the flaming wreckage. It was only after a second or two when he latched onto the source of the whimpering -- he definitely wasn't just imagining that -- and his eyes fell onto the puppy sprawled beside the rubble and fire.
With a soft noise of surprise and concern, he hurried in to crouch beside the small dog, attention grabbed by its injured-looking leg and the distressed sounds it was making before any of the stranger details. An odd glow could easily be attributed to the light of the fire, after all.
"Shh, it's okay," he said softly, hands lifted nonthreateningly in hopes of soothing any instinctual fear. It wasn't as if he had much (or really any) experience dealing with animals, but he'd just have to hope for the best. The urge to help overrode any sense of caution. "Just hold on for a second..." He dropped a hand lightly to the leg that was extended as if hurt, letting divine magic flow forth to seek out and patch up any hurt.

Pailash was frustrated, more than anything else, by her own coughing fit. How annoying.
Ember, though, scratched at the door and whined as loudly as she could - trying to get attention from someone who had opposable thumbs.

Ember scratched and whined at the door.
Unfortunately for Solstice – this door was locked, and calling through it didn’t seem to accomplish much, except for sparking another coughing fit. No sound came from inside or, at least, none that they could discern over the roar of the fire nearby.
Pailash, at least, would find herself able to breathe again, and even move over to the door, if she were so inclined.
The puppy whimpered and shied away from Caim, hunching its shoulders up, ears lowering against its head. It yelped painfully when Caim touched its leg, starting to draw it back, then holding still as the healing energy soothed the injury. When Caim drew his hand back the puppy would jump to its feet, letting out a happy bark, tail wagging so hard that it moved the puppy’s entire lower half with it.
From within the room, Caim could almost see through the huge clouds of smoke billowing in from the floor above – and the massive inferno burning overhead, dark red flames roiling through the room.
The building would creak again, loudly – Pailash and Solstice would hear it from the floor above. For Caim, the noise would be extremely loud, and followed very abruptly by a huge chunk of the (burning) ceiling dropping down towards him and the pup.
((Before Caim’s post, I’ll need a dexterity saving throw, please!))

Not again. Solstice's eyes slammed shut as a coughing fit racked her frame, her lungs burning and eyes watering. That became her entire world for the moment, as she focused all her effort on just breathing again. She had to persevere just a little longer, long enough to get them all out....

Caim would find himself able to snatch up the puppy and dodge away from the collapsing ceiling just barely in time; an enormous piece of what looked like a flaming bed would seem to twist above him in midair, as if of its own volition, and crash just inches away; even the fire from above would seem to be guided around him, leaving him uncomfortable but uninjured. The puppy yelped, writhing about in his arms, and squirmed about, chomping down painfully on Caim's arm with its unexpectedly sharp teeth.

It was an odd stroke of luck. Caim's reactions certainly weren't so well-honed that he would have been likely to dodge that. He startled into movement by the sound of cracking wood, practically diving forward to snatch up the puppy and half-roll half-fall forward with it just out of way of the collapsing ceiling. The falling rubble swung just overhead, perhaps hinged in place by some still-intact strip of wood just long enough that the momentum as it finally snapped dropped it all at an angle that just barely missed it. The crash of it was loud in his ears and splinters of charred wood pepped him in the impact, but there was no pain.
At least, no pain from being crushed by falling wood. The puppy, however, seemed startled by the sudden manhandling and tumbling, and Caim had barely registered that he was still alive when there was suddenly a sharp, hot blooming of pain in his arm where the dog bit down.
He flinched and hissed in pain, trying to resist the instinct to recoil or shout for fear of scaring the puppy more. He adjusted his grip, angling the injured arm away from its mouth, and grimaced at the sight of blood staining his sleeve.
"Shhh, sorry, I'm sorry," he whispered, aiming for soothing but probably hitting closer to pained. With his hands full (and plenty else to worry about) he could just barely press the fingers of his other hand to the bloody spot. The healing energy flowed with less control than he usually aimed for, but it'd have to do. He'd barely released the magic when he was already moving to twist one arm in the loose excess fabric of his cloak, padding it as best he could on the fly before shifting his grip on the small dog so the mass of fabric was the closest thing to its mouth.
"Sorry, just hold on a bit, okay?" he murmured distractedly to it as he staggered back up and hurried back into the hall. Best to move quickly before the fire out there could spread and block him in completely. He moved towards the stairs again as quickly as he could, shouting up once he was closer to the stairwell, "Are you two alright?"

With the door revealed and the much bigger woman temporarily incapacitated, Pailash considered her options for a moment, after getting into line of sight of the door - she'd seen that it is locked, and really, her options for dealing with that were rather limited.
"Heads up, big gal!" She shouted, "Don't move for a sec, okay?"
And with a hand outstretched, her staff swirled with fiery power. There was that old saying about fighting fire with fire, right? And this was the best way she could think of to deal with this situation.
Merely controlling fire was rather simple; creating new flame and forcing it into the world was a different matter entirely.
She was painfully aware that the building was cracking and burning around them. Hopefully, that would work to their advantage and she could simply blast the door out of its frame, but they didn't have time to mess around. Complex magical circles of bright red energy etched themselves into reality around her outstretched hand, swirling with numerical symbols as she ran through the complex calculations in her head.
And then unleashed a trio of burning lances of light, aiming to punch right through the lock and the doorframe around it, and the hinges, hoping that she could simply remove the barrier between themselves and the helpless child within.
