DM roll: CedRerOO1d20The door that Caim had chosen was not locked; it would fly open at his command. A massive explosion of fire burst from the doorway, swarming out into the hall and just barely catching the tiefling in its blaze, hard enough to burn even him. The fire was a bright and almost beautiful thing, like a swarm in the air, curling in on itself and releasing heavy, thick smoke into the air, before settling back to a more sedate burn at the edges of the now-open doorway. The room inside, as far as Caim could see, was burning heavily, almost like an inferno; thick black smoke trickled out into the hallway, and the fire crept forward. If he kept moving, though, despite the pain, Caim would be able to make it up the stairs and to the second floor, where - through the increasingly thick smoke - he would see his two companions. Upstairs, Pailash and Solstice would have no idea of the fireball unleashed below; it was hard to hear much of anything over the crackle of the flames. While carrying Pailash, Solstice would find herself still able to move at a quick pace, just not as much as she had before - she would make it about halfway to the next set of stairs. Perhaps it was being carried, or just the cessation of her bad luck, but Pailash would be able to breathe once more, and no worse for the wear other than a slightly dry throat.
The fire on the far end of the floor continued to burn steadily, lapping at the walls and ceiling and belching heavy smoke towards them. There was a faint creaking groan from the building, but no more alarming crashes.

Oblivious to what happened below, Solstice continued her single-minded pursuit of the daughter on the third floor. She tried to listen for the tiefling, and any other sounds of life aside from them, but wasn't going to stand still to do so. That creaking groan already made her nervous, and reminded her that time was of the essence. Heading down the hall with the gnome lady (unless she insisted upon being set down), Solstice kept her eyes on the stairs...and that blaze not far past it. Maybe it wouldn't interfere with their path, but after seeing what her gnomish companion could do with flames, well...that's a risk best not taken, if possible. The lack of coughing now is a good sign, and she'll take it.
"Breathing alright now, lass? Think you can do anything about that blaze up ahead before it tries to reach us?" One more flight of stairs left to go and then...well, they would see what there is to see. She covered her nose and mouth quickly again, trying to spare her own breathing as much as possible. Neither of her current companions looked as though they could carry her out, unless they had some amazing tricks up their sleeves.

Caim yelped at the sudden burst of flames from the doorway, but the sound was easily eaten up by the roar of the blaze. Even with the bit of space afforded to him by opening it indirectly, he couldn't manage to stumble back in time and the edges of the burst of flame licked viciously at him with a searing heat.
Ow. Not completely fireproof, then. Good to know.
Wincing under the burns stinging up and down the arms he'd thrown up defensively, he stared hard at the flames in the doorway. There was no sign of anything living moving inside, and after a moment he hurried the rest of the way up the stairs after the others. No time for a more thorough search, maybe on the way back down...
He reached the top of the stairs and could see the two women running down the hall through the smoke. The layout of the hall was similar, and it did nothing to ease his concerns about anyone else being here. Frowning, he paused the top of the stairs to make sure the others were a safe distance down the hall before he attempted the same trick on the closest door just to the left -- this time waiting in the stairwell, pressed up against the wall.
Provided nothing wildly unexpected happened, he'd again press forwards after that, checking quickly through the open doorway and trying to shout over the noise of the fire and following the others if he didn't see or hear any sign of life.
"Is anyone here?"

Pailash didn't seem to mind being picked up and run around with - Solstice was a heck of a lot faster than she was, and there were more important issues at stake here than her own pride. Plus, it gave her a really good view of the fire, which she appreciated greatly. A whistful sigh escaped her as she stared at the sheer mass of flame before them. That was a lot of fire. It was beautiful, really, and she'd love to just watch it - but it'd be a lot more fun to do that if she wasn't in danger of being set ablaze herself.
"That's a lot of fire." She said, "I can slow it down a bit, but I don't think I can guarantee stopping it."
She'd kept a death-grip on her staff of course; no respectable wizard worth her salt abandoned her staff in a time of peril. Now, she raised it again towards the flame, and tried to extinguish the outer edge of it in an attempt to 'herd' it back and away from them whilst they made it towards the stairs.
(Control Flames again; extinguishing one of the five foot cubes closest to us, though she can't really hold the whole thing back if I'm understanding the map correctly)

"Anything you can do will help!"
Solstice didn't wait for Pailash to finish casting, instead bringing them closer to her target though not close enough to be touched by the flames themselves. As long as the gnome spellcaster can grant them a little more space, she's charging past the burst of flames and up the stairs. One more floor left, and it was the one they sought. She heard the tiefling's question (barely, over the noise), and was grateful that he stopped to ask and listen. If he found someone....no, better not waste energy on a possible non-dilemma. They knew one person was definitely still in the building, and Solstice had no intention of facing that mother again without giving her some news.

This time, no massive burst of flame would greet Caim; the door was also unlocked, but flung open easily enough to reveal a small, dark room beyond. It was small; it would be a tight fit for even two people to live there, and from the furniture it seemed more than two did. Everything was old and shabby, but as neat and clean as effort could make it: the sheets desperately white against the dingy-smoke filled air, a neat coal iron set up alongside the wall with stacks of hand-mended clothing. A small basket of children's toys sat near the door, books and blocks and dolls. But there were no people, at least: no one still trapped inside. Caim would, if he wanted, be able to make it about halfway across the second floor before the smoke tickling his throat became too much; like Pailash, he would find himself unable to do more than stand and cough, feeling the heat of the fire tickling him. Pailash and Solstice would round the stairs to find themselves staring at what felt like a wall of flame, with no ability to see what lay beyond. Maybe - just maybe - there would be a sense that the fire didn't extend too far. Maybe. Certainly, off the right there was a wave of intense, painful heat that suggested that was a bad way to go. Second FloorThird Floor((No action or movement for Caim this round! Just the con save, please. For Solstice and Pailash: neither of you are incapacitated by the smoke. This is a good time to discuss my rules about moving through fire, which will come up soon if not this turn! For each square with any fire that you move through, please make a dexterity saving throw.))

Well, that was about what she had expected. Solstice grimaced at the wall of flame, and paused to get a sense of what might be around it, if possible. The heat was too intense coming from the right, so she abandoned any idea of heading in that direction. Even with the Bless spell to boost them, it would be a likely death trap. "It's too dangerous over on the right, so I'm going to make a hard left and hope it doesn't extend too far. I know that's a lot of flame to extinguish, but whatever you can do--wait, hold up--"
She held out her shield and braced herself to run, but paused upon realizing she hadn't heard their third companion's footsteps just yet. Frowning in concern, she glanced back down the stairs and raised her voice, hoping he could hear over the crackle of the flames. Since Pailash had been overcome by the smoke, she now worried for him as well. "Hey, tiefling! Talk to me, do you need help?" She could pick him up, too, if need be, though wondered how that would work if she had to carry the daughter as well. One thing at a time.

The shouting was probably what did it. He opened his mouth again to yell some more, but it felt like the intake of air he got was all smoke and he was abruptly choking on the breath, stumbling to a halt as he coughed up a goddamn lung. Distantly, he heard one of the women shouting back to him, and for a moment he just shook his head like that would communicate anything at this distance, trying to catch his breath.
"I-I'm fine..." he managed after he finally got the coughing under control. "Keep going."

Pailash whistled appreciatively at the wall of flame. That was a lot of fire. It wouldn't be long now before the inferno burned its way through structural supports; at that point, the smoke inhalation was going to be one of their lesser issues. She didn't feel like falling three stories today.
She held her staff before her as though it was doing all the work - another flare of light, and she pushed the fire back from their immediate vicinity, but she held little hope that it was going to assist them all that much.
"Well then." She said, brightly. "You take right, I'll take left? We need to find this kid before things get even worse."
As she spoke, she gestured with her free hand, and surrounded herself with a shimmering second skin of clear blue light.
(Assuming that Solstice is happy to agree to that plan - since neither Pailash nor Solstice can see that the fire doesn't stop to the right at all - Pailash will run five squares to the right after clearing the way ahead for Solstice. The moment she takes fire damage - which I imagine won't be long at all - she'll cast Absorb Elements in order to gain fire resistance)

Even with that extremely helpful magic at hand, Solstice's expression remained skeptical as she looked over to that inferno. She trusted what instinct told her about the left's flames not extending too far if they could just make it. If that was true and the flames hadn't reached that side of the hall, then the daughter's best chance to be alive was in that direction. If she had been caught in that inferno to the right...then all their skill and magic wouldn't matter. She would already be lost. Grimly, she shook her head.
"Charging straight ahead looks to be a death trap, but if the flames end to the left, we might see a way to the right from that angle. Let's head over and see what we see first. The less flame we have to wade through, the better for her and us." Even without flames, smoke inhalation would be a mounting problem. Solstice already knew that heading back the way they'd come would be too risky, and was forming another idea. That would be a risk as well...but probably not as much as running face-first into fire. One challenge at a time, eh? We'll get there when we get there.
