You're both walking, finally noticing that the environment has shifted to something more macabre. A hint of movement, about thirty feet away, catches your eyes, Thea first but Goromitali not too far after. It's a silhouette of what could be.... a man? No, it's too scraggly. A bear? Not big enough. The mist is making it hard to tell exactly what's there. But, once you notice it? It stops moving, keeping still, and you have the creeping on the back of your neck sensation that it's watching you. Staring. Waiting. Observing. Calculating.
What do you do?

The two of them exchanged little tidbits of information over pleasant conversation as they moved through the woods. Over the course of an hour, Goromitali wouldn't notice the strange fog that had rolled in, reducing their vision. Complete by the rapidly setting sun? The combination brought their vision down considerably, and Goromitali slowed his pace, looking back and forth.
"Ssstrange," the dragonborn would mutter. "We should have had a couple more hours before dark." There was nothing anymore- no birds or sounds of natural outside the now eerie groans of trees in a non-existent wind. The drizzle quickly soaked Goromitali, though it didn't seem to bother him at all. His eyes would trace around them, and meet with where Thea's were looking a couple seconds after. He would still, taking in the sight of a man-sized creature, and after a moment, Goromitali would tilt his head slowly in one direction, then the other.
"I think... maybe we ssshould ssstart moving away," the monk would speak quietly to Thea, but not moving himself just yet. His fingers would move slightly, like a cowboy getting ready to draw from his holster. Goromitali did not like the feeling of a predator descending upon them like he had right now, and he nervously swallowed, a quiet nervousness he hoped that Thea wouldn't notice.

Thea enjoyed chatting further with Goromitali, his positive response to her earlier question inspiring to ask more questions about dragonborn, at least superficial ones. She would, of course, have been happy to answer the same about genasi, were he to have any such questions. The conversation was so absorbing that Thea didn’t notice the rapidly setting sun, nor the strange thick fog. She shivered, glancing around, and froze when her eyes caught the distant silhouette.
“… Yes,” Thea whispered, not-quite-glancing at Goromitali, wanting to keep both him and the distant figure in her vision. She took a deep breath, pressing one hand to her chest, and summoned her mage armor, flickering lightning that was dim and dull in the fog, just the faintest shimmer of little lightning bolts over her skin. Her arm still hurt after that fall, and the last thing Thea wanted was to be caught unaware.
Once that would done, she would start to ease cautiously away from the creature in the most natural direction that would avoid him, and yet let them continue towards where they had thought the herd was, with a few small, even steps.

As the two turned around to start walking away the figure let out a howl - a beastial mix of human and undead, and started running towards them, closing the distance with each passing step.
((roll initiative)) Y9|s_a0C1d20+3 There is no way either of you can beat a 23, so here's the first turn
As the creature started running it bent low, low to the ground, until it was running on all fours and behaving like an animal. Snarling and grunting it sprinted towards them, covering the distance impossibly fast he was on them in an instant. There was blood on its twisted human face, looking almost like a ghoul with how much gore clung to it. Old blood seeped down its front, into its torn and ragged clothes. Bare feet and hands were caked with dark death. At one point in time? This was a human.
It was focused on Goromitali, the bigger calculated threat. There was a sheen of bloodlust and death in his eye.

Goromitali's Roll for Initiative: y8VCYusZ1d20+2
Goromitali watched, taking two, maybe three steps back. Thea had just cast a spell of some kind, probably a good call, all things considered, before suddenly, the humanoid burst onto all fours and was upon him- no longer a man, but ravenous beast instead.

Goromitali: 16/21 HP; 2/3 KI
The humanoid form lurched toward Goromitali, who snarled under his breath. Reaching to a holster in the swell of his back, the dragonborn withdrew a shortsword with a handle that looked like it was wrapped in a thin, dark rope. Coming in low and swinging high, the monk would slash upward before focusing his ki. His second attack was a straight kick, the third attack in his Flurry of Blows a chop aimed at the collar of the form that had approached him.

Thea had taken no more than a few steps away when the creature howled, low and long, and lunged at them. As it drew close through the mist she could see it - horribly - and then it was on Goromitali in a burst of ragged limbs and bloody gore.
Goromitali didn’t seem to flinch, and Thea watched, impressed, as he slashed three times at the creature, hitting each time, two of the blows very impressive - but she didn’t have that much time to pay attention. She took a few quick steps back to open up her angle, and thrust her hand out towards the creature, focusing her fear into a long burst of lightning between them.

Recharge 5 or 6 4kOi0SIy1d6
In a fury the creature felt each and every blow it had directed at it. It's body was forced up onto its feet, rag-dolling with each blunt force, rolling with each punch and slash of the weapon. The lightning over it sent shudders through its body, causing it to growl again.
Focusing on the threat that hurt it the most, it pulled a sharpened axe it somehow had on its person, and slashed twice at Goromitali.
To hit Goromitali: 1d20+7 = 1d8+6 1d20+7 = 1d8+6
It then brandished a knife, turning to face the other threat that had harmed it, and threw a knife

Goromitali was skilled, sure, but the overwhelming force that the smaller creature threw into each attack was too much. The first one caused the dragonborn monk to stumble to the side, and the second ax strike caught Goromitali with a sickening hook that dropped him flat on the ground at the creature's feet.
Trying to pull himself back up, Goromitali's body would go slack on the ground.

Thea felt the lightning pulse through her as it struck the creature, thrumming in her blood. Then - rather like a nightmare - the thing pulled out an axe and fell on Goromitali, slashing, slashing - and the Dragonborn fell. The thing turned and hurled a knife at Thea, but it whistled harmlessly past, vanishing somewhere into the woods.
Thea realized she was shaking, watching Goromitali try to pull himself up, then collapsed back to the ground, slack and still. Lightning pounded in her veins, and the desire to fling it at the creature was so strong she could hardly resist it. But - how strong was this thing? It felt as if it had shrugged off Goromitali’s blows and hers beside, and - a little note of caution echoed in her mind, just strong enough, years of practice with control barely winning out over raw fury. Soon, she promised the anger thrumming through her blood – soon. Maybe Goromitali wasn’t dead yet; maybe Thea could still save him. The thought of running away or summoning the portal didn’t occur to her; there was no way she could just abandon Goromitali, not at least without trying to save him. Not after he’d saved her.
Thea exhaled and dropped the bolt connecting her and the monster-that-had-once-been-human. She darted off to the left, crossing about twenty five feet around the perimeter of the circle around Goromitali, trying not to go any further from him than she had to, and doing her best to hide behind a hopefully-convenient tree. She reached back to where she had been, jiggling the winds to make the sound of rustling leaves, hoping the monster would think she had run straight back into the woods.
((OOC: Thea moves left around the edge of a twenty-five foot circle around Goromitali, covering thirty feet, so she’s now twenty five feet from Goromitali and twenty five feet from her old position. She uses Gust on the spot just behind her old position to rustle the leaves there

The stirring leaves drew the creature's attention, looking back at the fallen meal in front of it, but knowing it's partner was out there, somewhere. Looking back up the partner was gone, just a series of leaves billowing where it must have ran.
Int check YFMm11Nw1d20
Snarling and gore-roaring it dropped to all fours, and took off in the direction, sprinting as fast as it could, to follow the leaves.
He is now 60 feet in a straight line away from Goromitali.
