Before we get into this, do know that I used to play 5e a few years ago with buddies, but I haven't actually played a session in a long long time. In case I royally mess something up, do be gentle.

Personality: Asmodeus is entirely too serious for someone who dresses the way he does, and who goes by the name 'Asmodeus' with a straight face. He's torn between having absolutely no patience or tolerance for crime or what he sees as 'wickedness', while at the same time not trusting the 'authority' that he sees failing to put away these obvious evils. But at least his heart is in the right place.

This is a tall lean figure, covered nearly head to toe in red and black hard leather armor. The gloves are studded along each knuckle to promise extra pain with every punch and the boots are chunky with steel metal along the toe for an extra 'oomph' with every kick.
The figure's face is is mostly covered by a dark red cowl that shows only his strong chin and unshaven stubble, the mask looking almost like a leather wrestler's mask with pointed devil horns, and black see-through fabric that hides the eyes to allow him to look anywhere he wants.
Much of his armor is hidden by a red leather cape that flows from the shoulders all the way down to the ankles, scalloped at the bottom. The interior is black, however, which creates a nice contrast and makes it easier to see that he is wearing a series of belts and straps, which are covered in various weapons. Daggers, clubs, vials and jars. Everything looks dangerous. Nothing looks friendly.

History:
Some are born heroes, others are made. For every chosen hero or child of the gods, there are many who find the idea too difficult to grapple with, or find they are not equipped to a life of tireless selflessness. A life of danger and fright. For those people, they need help. They need something they can rely upon, to give themselves the strength they need. For many they seek help from the Divines, praying on their knees to voices in the sky.
For 'Asmodeus', he sought his help from...somewhere else. Life out the safety of city walls is difficult enough, what with Gnolls, goblins and countless other monsters and horrors. Sadly, it's the humans who have a tendency to show their worst sides when they think they can get away with it. Bandits, highwaymen, thieves and cut-throats. Savage barbarian villages, waging brutal war on their unprepared neighbors. Yes, humans can be just as dangerous to humans as any 'other' threat out there, sometimes even moreso.
Well, suppose an isolated village got attacked by some of those lawless men and thieves, and suppose those wicked men did a sloppy job of eradicating their enemies. Suppose a survivor hid and watched everything...the slaughtering of the weak and the old, the burning and looting of the local church, the ugly sneer of men who feared nothing. That would have quite the impression on a young mind, wouldn't it?
Well, the solution to feeling weak and powerless is to arm yourself, and to find yourself some armor. The solution to being caught unprepared is to learn everything you possibly can, absorb all knowledge like a sponge. And if you look in the mirror, and still see only the sort of weak villager who is preyed upon by dangerous men? The solution to that, is to become the only sort of thing they fear. Taunt them with infernal torment that awaits them at the end of their journey of wickedness.
If you suppose those things, well someone like Asmodeus doesn't seem so strange at all. (Well, maybe he still does.)
