The sun had been hiding behind the clouds all morning, but it finally fought its way through the blanket of clouds. Warm beams of sunlight descended upon the cobblestone road where a pair of leather boots was frenetically moving from side to side. Initially there had not been any shadows in the alley for the sun was blocked by the clouds, but now with the grey sky tearing apart and revealing precious pockets of blue, the high roofs cast their shadows upon a half-elven woman, impatiently waiting in front of a backdoor.
Atreija looked up towards the sun, squinting her eyes. The corners of her mouth began to rise and formed a subtle smile. Ah, the sun was finally showing itself again. These last few gloomy days really had her in a funk. It was those times when she missed the dry heat of Calimport the most.
Two swallows must’ve felt inspired by the sunlight as well, as they set out from one of the nearby gables and Atreija watched their tails wobble in the air.
The woman had her back to the door, which suddenly began to creak and open. “Here’s all the ones we finished so far. Next time you better come earlier! Those last minute favors really ought to cost you more…”, a man’s voice declared.
With slight embarrassment Atreija turned around and said with a smirk: “Well with the rain finally stopping and all, I wouldn’t have been able to distribute those anyway. You wouldn’t want your favorite errands girl to get wet, would you?”
“You’re lucky Guthbert likes you or else he wouldn’t have printed those pamphlets at all!”, sighed the man and handed Atreija a stack of leaflets.
“I would’ve done it myself…”, protested Atreija, but the man immediately cut her off.
“Not after what happened last time. Trust me, we’re still cleaning our floors from all that spilled ink… Now go on about your business!” The man shook his head in resignation and started to head back inside.
“Alright, alright. Guess I’ll never hear the end of that…”, Atreija replied with her eyebrows raised. “Tell Guthbert thanks again and I’ll come by this week and bring some more rags over!”
“Will do", said the man with his body already inside the door frame and only his hand still visible as he waved goodbye and closed the door.
The half-elf finally took a look at what she was given: Red and black ink was smeared on rather dirty looking paper which wasn’t even real paper, but shredded hemp and linen cloth and well, they weren’t the prettiest leaflets but for basically free they should do the job.
With a skip in her step, Atreija quickly got a move on. She left the little out-of-the-way back alley and went down a few other streets and suddenly she found herself back in the bustling busyness of the city. This street corner was quite desired, as a plethora of street merchants were trying to find customers for their wares. The cheese merchant on the opposite side would probably be Atreija’s nemesis for the next couple of hours since he was a loud one and always determined to get people’s attention.
Without hesitation, Atreija approached a gnome woman who had just bought a garment from one of the merchants nearby and was scouting for her next bargain buy.
“Excuse me, would you be interested in taking part in the Rose Fest?”, Atreija asked with a polite tone and holding out one of her leaflets which had a big rose on it.
“We’re celebrating tomorrow at the Temple of Sune and eve…” But the woman did neither listen to Atreija nor take the piece of paper and instead shuffled along to the jewelry stand stall next to where Atreija was standing.
“Guess not then…”, mumbled the half-elf woman under her breath as she swiftly turned undeterred to the next person right behind the uninterested gnome.
“Come and join the Rose Fest tomorrow in the temple district! There is food and drink and we even have…", the man, a human with blonde hair and simple clothes, looked at Atreija curiously and didn’t say a word, as he took her leaflet and just walked passed her while she was talking.
“…a greAT ENTERTAINER COMINGGG!”, she screamed after him, but since he didn’t turn around, Atreija couldn’t even be sure if he had heard her with all the other commotion going on around her.
With a sigh, but still a smile on her face Atreija thought to herself: This will be a long a day…
