Initiative Order:
- Rat Swarms
- Juliette
- Giant Rat
- Crucible
- Mystery Foe
The silence of the inner chamber was shattered.
With a chorus of squeaks, shrieks, and claw-scratch scuttles, three large hordes of squirming rats descend from some of the drain-like passages on either side of the chamber. Their beady, red eyes shine through the gloom just beyond the light of Crucible’s shield as they quickly scurry in the direction of the paladin, the cleric, and their gnome-like foe.
Being unable to reach anyone just yet, that makes it Juliette 's turn!

With the mark still burning on the creature’s skin, Juliette was not about to be deterred from meting out divine wrath against him. The moment she saw it, she was moving purposefully towards him again, unafraid and unconcerned with the squealing of rats. They were unlikely to be a danger to Crucible; the only person they truly threatened was the one who was already close to death’s door, and neither of them would be able to help him if they were dead due to the machinations of this bizarre abomination.
“Hold the platform.” She shouted over the din of squealing rats. “Mayhap it will provide a defensible position. When I have taken this one’s head, I shall join you.”
And that was truly all there was to it. Take the head of this creature, whose foul intellect she now suspected of being behind this whole sorry mess, and then it would merely be a question of undertaking pest control and this could all be done.
The approach was from an infuriating position. She was well aware of the tactical advantages offered by the higher ground, but she was not going to be deterred by such.
As she stalked towards her prey, her blades sang a song of retribution, humming through the air and preceding her relentless approach. She had allowed her fury and impatience to overcome her sense as she made her way through this desecrated tomb. She would not allow such to happen again. She would simply dispatch this foe and be done with it.
The first blade carved a furrow into the stonework in a shower of sparks, and perhaps it was her imagination, but she could swear the creature’s twisted lips curled in amusement at her misplaced strike.
With a lunge upwards, she struck true with her second blade. The steel punctured the creature’s flesh, and as it did, she leaned closer.
“You should have run whilst you had the chance.”
Her voice was flat. Neutered. All the hatred she felt for what had been done here, and the creature that had dared to lead her a merry dance, was instead channelled into the divine link she held with her Goddess.
“I would have found you, but you could have clung to your existence a while longer.”
And with that, her shadow reared about her, flowed down her blade, and tore into the flesh of the hateful creature, intent on consuming it from within.

Flopping out from a passage on the far side of the chamber, a massive rat, its brown fur matted and filthy with refuse, scuttles to the fringe of Crucible’s light. It sniffs at the air, shrieks, and then begins to scuttle after its smaller kind toward the paladin and her engaged foe.
Being (also) still out of reach of anyone, it’s now 3personal5me 's turn!

Crucible watched as the rodents poured out of the walls, taking a step back as if to protect the man at his feet. The creature from earlier was back, seemingly the leader of everything, and was already engaged with Juliette. As the two clashed, an unusually large rat scurried across the chamber, heading for his companion and her adversary. The swarms, however, may not be so interested in the duo. He didn't come this far to lose a civilian to pests. He slipped his mace into his belt and knelt down, hoisting the stranger up onto his shoulder. Shield still in hand, he prepared to defend the platform.
"One coming in behind you!" He shouted to Juliette. She was more than capable of handling herself, but a heads up was always appreciated in a fight.
(readying an action to use his shield as an improvised weapon to strike the first hostile to move within 5 ft of him)

The gnome-like creature before Juliette grunts and wheezes, as much from pain now as rage, as thick black blood stains the fabric of its filthy tunic and drips in thin rivulets down the lip of the passage. One gnarled hand grasps at the sickly black mark left by Juliette’s divine smite. Still, it glares at the paladin with eyes alight like a pair of smoldering coals. A deep rage. Gnashing its teeth, pounding its iron feet, and swinging its crude sickle with its other hand, the creature brings the wicked blade down on Juliette in three fell swoops, though it’s forced to awkwardly lean over the edge of the passage to reach the oversized weapon down.
(Juliette enjoys a +2 to AC for the following attacks, due to the half-cover provided by the lip of the passage.)
Attack roll 1: Wd16ggmW1d20+6
Damage roll 1: 2d4+4 Slashing
Attack roll 2: 1d20+6

As the pair continue their struggle, the swarm of rats descending upon the chamber continue their advance. A few of the swarm, sniffing at the air and squeaking delightfully at the scent of blood, run towards Crucible and his unconscious charge, but stop short at the edge of the fetid green pool. The rats gnash their teeth at the water, and then swing around to join most of the swarm in rushing towards Juliette instead. Only a third can immediately reach the paladin. These, however, set to work gnawing and clawing at any bit of armor or clothing they can reach, beady eyes and sharp incisors set on finding any coveted flesh they can.
Attack roll: 1d20+2
Damage roll: 2d6 Piercing
A few of the swarm try to scramble up the sides of the chamber, following the rivulets of blood falling from the gnome-like creature, but give up after a few futile attempts.

With pests gnawing at her legs and scum trying to carve her to pieces above, Juliette remained completely focused on the task at hand. Now that she was close enough, she slammed her fist into the ledge above her and hauled herself through the air, sailing over the creature and its malevolent sickle.
The arcing leap was graceful, showering the hateful creature in the rats who had dared try to impede her progress.
She came down behind him, and as she did, drove her leading sword into his spine.
There was a sickening crunch, and she twisted, her shadow surging to join the malevolent darkness already attempting to tear the creature to shreds. As she wrenched the blade back and out, the power lashed around wildly, shearing him in twain. One heavy leather boot pressed into the side of the monster’s head as she looked down to survey the battle beneath.
“Naught but vermin.” She sneered. “One would think this were a sewer rather than a grave. But if the Mistress demands I play ratcatcher, then so be it.”

It's body now wrenched in two, black sludge oozing from either end, the red hatred in the gnome-like creature's eyes dissipates. A moment later the creature itself vanishes in a wisp of red-tinged smoke, the faint metallic smell of blood, and one final, rage-filled wheeze. All that remains is the crude sickle and the red-soaked hat it wore.
On the either side of the chamber, the giant rat pads around the pool of green water, beady eyes flitting between the warforged and the unconscious man, as it sniffles and shrieks. Again, it gnashes its teeth in disgust at the water, before waddling its bloated and waste-strewn body over in the direction of Juliette, the rest of the rats, and what blood streaks remain from the battle that occurred there.
It's 3personal5me 's turn!

Crucible watched as Juliette was relentlessly attacked by the creature. They were savage blows, and looked serious. Despite her wounds, she managed to pull through and finish the monster, and with style. But the rats seemed wary of the murky water, and were heading towards her. Crucible was already moving, heavy footfalls echoing in the cavernous space. He called upon divine magic once more, shouting to his comrade. "Well done, he stood no match against you! We should head to the tunnel, as a chokepoint!" He felt the healing power flowing through his words as he charged towards the exit, shield ready to defend against the nearby rodents. Once in the tunnel, Juliette could easily handle them.
(Healing Word, 2nd Level for Juiliette, and dashing towards the tunnel. If he can reach it, he will wait just inside, allowing him to defend while waiting for Juliette. Crucible is still under his Encumbrance limit, and can move at full speed)
