Lucy Greencobble the Halfling casually strolled through the forest. The morning sun was shining through the cold air, the scent of blooming flowers perfumed the air, and birds chirped in the background. ‘I should be happy,’ she murmured to herself. ‘It’s a lovely day.’ She smiled a practiced, forced smile.
‘It’s no use faking it,’ a reptilian voice hissed in her head. ‘We both know why dark thoughts plague you. Go back and free my physical body, and I will leave your mind.’
‘And have you go on another murderous rampage, Uziken?’ Lucy replied out aloud. ‘I think we’re better off keeping you where you are.’
Lucy reflected on what had occurred twelve years ago. As an eight year old child she had wandered into a long lost temple where the demon Uziken had been sealed generations ago. The demon had entered her mind and granted her magical powers which he used to force her to free him, after which he… No, there was no point in going over that again. All that mattered now was that the now adult Lucy had taken back full agency of her body and learned to control the magic that Uziken had given her. Yes, the last ten years of hermit living had served her well, and now she was craving some social interaction.
Her random wanderings had taken her through hamlets, villages and market towns, but she had preferred to spend most of her time away from society, not trusting herself to fully repress Uziken; in the past he had taken control at will. But the last few days the settlements had been larger and more frequent, and she knew she was less than a day from Waterdeep.
Better a large city than a small town, she thought to herself. Easier to blend in and be forgotten.
By early afternoon the city was in sight. Lucy had left the forest and joined the main road, and was in awe of the sight before her. A country lass, Lucy had never seen such a large settlement; she never would have guessed there were enough people in the world to populate such a place.
‘Kss, kss, kss,’ she heard Uziken chuckle in her head. ‘You will lost in there, child. The city will swallow you whole.’ Self-doubt started to enter her thoughts, but she forced a smile and resolutely walked on.
She heard someone on the road behind her. She turned to see…
