((As I understand it from Discord, you are both going to head up into the trees and take a short rest - totally fine))
The two spent an hour in the treetops, resting, planning, staying quiet for the most part. The longer they sat the more the mist began to fade, expanding their range of vision to see beyond 30, 40, 60 feet. It was dark still, but the bright moon and huge expanse of stars (a star system that would not be recognizable at all to either of them) let them see without problems - they'd spent an hour plus adjusting to the darkness after all.
The whole time there was no sound around them. No creatures. No monster. Nothing.
The only thing seen on the horizon on the still wind-less night, was a steady twisting thin dancing column of smoke coming from about 100 feet away to the northeast.
Roll for any short rest hit die you would like - then, let me know what you would like to do

TWO hit die for Thea: 1jWUMU0a1d6+11d6+1
Total hp: 27/27
An hour rest left Thea feeling - better. She'd largely forgotten about the scrapes from their earlier fall in the horror of the creature's attack and Goromitali's near-death experience. Getting up into the tree had been a bit painful, and they'd throbbed a little, but the pain had lessened as they rested, and she felt as good as new.
It was, in truth, a beautiful night. The stars were different, unfamiliar and strange in a way that left Thea a little homesick. She knew the stars at home well enough - they weren't so different between the sea of fallen stars and Waterdeep, except that they were often hard to see at night in the well-lit city. These stars? Her eyes traced the sky, searching for anything familiar and finding nothing.
"So," Thea said, quietly. The dense miserable mist had lifted, and Thea was now pretty sure the creature wasn't lurking behind the nearest tree, waiting to jump them. In a way, it was a little disappointing; the tension of waiting didn't quite release, just ebbed, leaving Thea feeling jittery and anxious, but also strangely - like she wanted to act, to do something, to take back control of what had been a pretty miserable quest. The only thing on the horizon was the smoke column.
But... Goromitali had wanted to go back to Waterdeep. And, in truth, Thea wouldn't mind being beneath her own familiar stars.
"It seems that... thing is gone," Thea said, quietly, turning to the dragonborn. "We could go home," she suggested, although her gaze slowly shifted back to the column of smoke. Could it be at the smoke? It had looked human, after all. "Or... do you want to see what's there, at the smoke?" She would leave the decision to Goromitali; he was, after all, the one who had nearly died.

Goromitali would look over Thea as she spoke, taking position in front of him. "If it isss needed, I will," the dragonborn would speak quietly before closing his eyes to focus. Reflect. Center himself. Meditate. Over the course of the hour, his darkness would wisp around them, and as the mist began to fade around them, revealing a night sky that was foreign. He wouldn't appreciate it, though- not as much as he would have given about any other circumstance. As he opened his eyes and quietly took in the night around them, his eyes would come to a single column of smoke nearby, rising up above the forest.
"Perhapsss," Goromitali spoke, still quiet, as he unfurled his legs and stretched, applying some of the ointment- a second dose- over the scrapes on his leg. "But what is to sssay that the next time someone elssse comes here, the monssster followsss them through the portal?" he would offer. Yes, he wanted to go home, but as long as that creature was out there- a creature he wanted to see dead- he wouldn't be able to settle himself down, even if they were a world away as shown by the stars above.
"I think... we ssshould invessstigate that sssmoke," Goromitali would stand, "and if it isss that creature, then we have a plan," he would nod. "I believe we can do this before we go back. Besidesss, we ssshould at least bring sssomething back with usss to prove we at leassst tried, right?" With that, the dragonborn rolled to his side, coming easily enough down the tree before stepping away from it, facing toward the smoke column.
"We ssshould be careful asss we move, though," the dragonborn would add. "If that isss where this creature livesss, then he may have ssset trapsss." On that note, Goromitali would lead the way, keeping an eye out for any kind of trap or wire as they made their way forward.

Thea shivered. Part of her wanted to argue with Goromitali – surely no one else would be foolish enough to come here – but she didn’t know. The next time Susie needed elk horns, she would probably cheerfully send someone else to this forsaken land, and… then who knew what would happen. That, it struck Thea that Goromitali might have felt he had a score to settle with that… thing. Thea wasn’t sure she minded going back empty handed, but she was sympathetic enough to the desire for something to go right today. She only hoped they wouldn’t regret it.
“Then – we’ll do it,” Thea would slid down the tree a little less gracefully than Goromitali, but manage not to hurt herself as she landed on the ground. The little breeze in her hand danced around, and she ran her fingers through it, settling it somewhat. Lightning still crackled faintly over her skin, invisible mage armor still active.
Traps – of course. Thea hadn’t thought about traps. She would follow Goromitali’s lead through the forest, trusting him to know what he was looking for – earlier disaster aside, he seemed to know what he was doing – and did her best to keep an eye on the woods, scanning the night for dangers new or old, as they headed towards the smoke column.

Super quick DM update before I go to bed
As you are walking, roll me a series of perception checks since you thought to look for traps as you walk through the woods towards the smoke.
Each roll 3 times please <3 I'll let you know in the next update if something happens or not.

Now it's dark, and you seem to have lost him But you're hopelessly lost yourself Stranded with a murderer You creep silently through the underbrush Aha! In the distance A small cottage with a light on Hope! You move stealthily toward it
Thea? As you and Goromitali are walking you set your foot down onto something decidedly not natural. It's metal. A -shink- of sound and suddenly you can't move, your leg is paralyzed. Or is it?
Roll a dex saving throw

But your leg! AH! It's caught in a bear trap!
Below your foot snaps shut a mouth of jagged metal teeth - a bear trap. You avoided it, somehow.
You look up further through the trees, the uncanny daunting idea realizing upon you - there might be more.
[You failed the other two next checks Thea, roll two more rounds of bear traps]
