Seeing that her companions had finished setting up their little stick shack, Echo stood, shook the snow off her shoulders again, and shuffled over to stand within the shelter. The tabaxi sighed. It was even better than the line of trees and bushes. Sure, it was nothing super impressive (though, like, apparently better than anything she could ever make), but their stalwart giant seemed to actually know what he was doing and even Thea seemed pretty crafty. The walls stood strong against the howling wind, the roof kept the worst of the snowfall out, and their bodies were already creating a small pocket of warmth inside. Echo plopped down on a bundle of branches and purred.
Maybe they would be okay after all!
Elora still weighed at the back of her mind, however, and Echo’s ears drooped further when she met Thea’s look. Six whole days of this. With luck the girl might have found a cave or a wooded hollow or even an empty barn but…that was wishful thinking. Really wishful thinking. Out here? In flat as heck land? More than likely she was in just as bad of a spot as they were and, like, they were seasoned adventurers. Echo shook her head and then nodded at Nakan. But he was right. They were still in the thick of it themselves. Getting turned into a catsicle out here would do little to help Elora either.
The suggestion of fire was also a good one, but Echo…knew her limits, at this point. The treasure hunter jumped to her feet and moved to the edge of their shack. By now her teeth had stopped chattering and she called back over her shoulder, voice a little bit stronger from it.
“That sounds really great but, uh, I’d rather not accidentally set everything on fire? I’ll just keep watch over here while you do that.”
Watch was a strong word, though. It implied the ability to actually see anything. The whole world around them was a flurry of white on black that challenged even the tabaxi’s good night vision. Echo squinted. A fire would certainly help, at least more than Nakan’s poor wimpy torch, but there was not much even light could do against a full on blizzard. Were there wild animals around Waterdeep? Like, big ones? Mean ones? The tabaxi traced a finger over the hilt of her rapier. Cat Lord, what if they had owlbears or something? Imagine, not freezing to death only to be chewed on by some four-legged bird thing.
Echo squinted harder.

The fire, through the aid of the tinderbox, the fact that Nakan's hands were so large and able to block the wind, Thea's help, and the aid of their shelter blocking a majority of the wind - plus the prayer to any gods or spirit's listening - the fire started. It was weak, but Thea's consistent short buffs acted like a billow to encourage the tinderbox's passable starter for a winter fire. The oiled cloth finally caught and after a few anxiety moments? The twigs caught, sending the tinder and kindling into a proper small fire. DM to Thea and Echo: Out of the corner of your eye, you'd see it start to move. Something there, prowling in the shadows and the wind. It was large. Bulky. Silent as it moved. In between breaths you met eyes with an impossibly large wolf, pained blue eyes squinting against the wind with ears tucked back as it surveyed yourself and your companions. It's fur was dark like stone as it creeped out and around by the trees to the north of you. The slate-grey large beast of a canine stepping with deliberate slow steps had circled closer - only now illuminated due to the success of the fire. It's eyes flicked between both of you then it's giant jowls opened as it licked its jaws and flicked a blackish pink tongue over its teeth. The fur on its neck bristled, thin skeletal sides heaving at the excitement of finally finding something it might be able to eat. The putrid rank dog-breath could almost be smelled from there by the way its breathing picked up, panting, then lifted its head to let out a desperate keening howl into the storm. Roll initiative! Dire wolf 1 - 21 ? ? ?- 15 Nakan - 9 Echo - 6 Thea -5 ? ? ?: The cold winter wind blows ominously Dire Wolf: The large beast growls, whether it came from his throat or his stomach is anyone's guess. The wolf lunges for the figures it sees now illuminated by the fire - jaws snapping at Echo, the figure most out of the shelter due to having been on active duty surveillance. Bite Attack on Echo: VHMPbgCg1d20+5If hit: 2d6+3Roll a DC 13 strength check or be knocked prone pending attack landing. The wolf snapped its jaws, spittle flying, but the bite missed. A stank rotten meat smell came from the mouth. This close? The wolf was clearly half starved and hadn't eaten in awhile for whatever reason. No doubt its hunger pushed it to attack such well-off and healthy looking prey. 1d20+5·2d6+3

Nakan let out a laugh, a sound created by a mixture of nervous excitement and relief, as the tiny fire came to life. Alone it wouldn't do much to stave off the biting cold, but paired with the little lean-to the trio had constructed it would keep them from freezing to death in their sleep.
Perhaps it was because of this that he didn't notice the heavy thuds of rapidly approaching paws, nor the distinct feral growl of a starving beast. He looked up from the fire just in time to see the wolf lunge towards Echo.
With a start, he began scrambling to his feet. He fumbled with the haft of his greataxe, the weapon slipping from his grasp twice before he managed to get a firm hold. As he finally found his footing, he noticed that the ravenous beast had barely missed the tabaxi, it's jaws snapping shut audibly even amidst the noise of the blizzard.
This was the last thing Nakan's rational mind processed, before the familiar surge of energy began to overtake him. With practiced skill, Nakan let his thoughts fade and allowed his mind to be overwhelmed by his instincts. The edges of his vision blurred, and his pulse quickened. He could feel the heavy cords of muscle in his legs and arms tensing, adrenaline running through his veins. Soon, there was nothing in the world but the wolf and himself.
Letting loose a savage snarl to rival that of the wolf's, Nakan exploded into motion, crossing the distance between himself and his target in moments. He swung the massive axe low, aiming to bring the blade upwards in a mighty uppercut.
((Crunchy Bits))
Nakan rages, and moves diagonally to the square between Thea and Echo.
He'll make a Reckless Attack against the wolf, giving himself Advantage. All enemies have advantage on attacks against Nakan until his next turn.

Because I can, here is an updated map The wolf yelped with a high pitched keen as the greataxe bit into him from below, the blade catching it from the armpit and into the chest. Hot blood sprayed, some flickering onto Nakan's other two companions as well as his own torso. Next!

Echo brandished her rapier, teeth barred and ears flat against her head, as she glared into the shadows beyond their little fire. The white dragon glared back. It was small, probably just a kid dragon, but its scales looked as white and cold as the blizzard, its strong flanks heaved with each ragged breath, and two great puffs of mist billowed from its nostrils. The awful, putrid smell even reached the tabaxi. Her nose wrinkled. At least it was not an owlbear! That was good, right? No. Probably not. A dragon was worse. Still, Echo dug her feet into the snow. It was do or die now. Her or it. To eat later or be eaten now! The dragon lunged. Echo lunged with her rapier. With a shout and a roar, the two met in the center: metal against scale, claw against teeth, tabaxi against dragon, adventurer again-
Echo opened her eyes.
She blinked, rubbed at them with her hands, and then shook her head. The blizzard still howled around their makeshift hut and her twitching ear caught the crackle and snap of a small fire behind her. The night was (relatively) quiet. They were okay! No dragon! She sniffed. She sniffed again. Echo retched. But that awful dragon-breath smell was…still there? Huh? Echo blinked and rubbed at her eyes again. Her gaze was still blurry, and her mind was still in a bit of a haze, but the tabaxi could just make out a large black smudge prowling at the edge of their fire. She squinted. Her good night eyes could see a bit clearer now – it had dark, matted fur, its ribs poked out, it had a nasty big pink tongue, and its teeth flashed in the flickering light. The awful smell had become almost overwhelming. Echo opened her mouth, looked from her companions back toward the wolf, and then blinked a third time. Should…should she, like, say something? Was this still a dream?
Then the wolf howled.
Then the wolf lunged.
Then the wolf tried to eat her.
Echo fumbled for her rapier as the big beast jumped, teeth gnashing, with blue eyes that burned of hunger as much as anticipation at its next meal. Half-frozen feline. Echo screamed. She threw her hands up and stumbled backwards, ears standing on end, neck fur bristling, and tail stiff as the wolf’s jaws snapped at the empty air in front of her. Close enough to throw thin lines of spittle across the tabaxi’s face and chest. She kept screaming. Behind her Echo heard a savage yell, loud enough to match the beast’s own primal howl, as something big strode past her. Or rather, something giant and made of stone. Nakan! The giant’s axe burned in the firelight as it swung around and cleaved into the beast’s chest. Steaming blood sprayed out in every direction, staining the snow red and splattering across Echo’s face and chest. She kept screaming. A massive, half-starved wolf heaved and gnashed its teeth in front of her. Nakan clutched at a now blood-covered axe beside her. Spittle and blood matted her own black and orange fur and her heart thumped hard in her chest.
Cat Lord, what – and she could, like, not stress this enough – the hells.
Shaking the last bits of haze from her mind and biting her tongue, the treasure hunter cut her scream short as her eyes narrowed. Her heart still thumped loud in her ears. This was no dragon. Not even an owlbear! But it was still pretty dang dangerous. Even with the nasty cut dealt by Nakan splitting open its skeletal flank, the thing still looked like it was spoiling for a fight. Well…she would give it one! A big one! Adrenaline now pumping through her limbs, Echo reached behind her back, unslung her crossbow, and leapt backwards, away from the wolf and Nakan and deeper into their makeshift hut. Her bolt sparkled from the fire now beside her as Echo loaded it on to her weapon. Then she took aim. Her eyes narrowed. Bits of spittle and blood drippled from her chin and her breath puffed quick and hard in the cold, but she still found her mark. The treasure hunter took a deep breath. And then another.
And then she let her bolt loose.

The fire lit – Thea sat back, happy and satisfied – and then suddenly Echo was screaming, there was a hideous rotten meat smell, and Thea whirled back to see an enormous beast lunging at them, just visible in the light of the fire.
Thea screamed too.
Something lunged forward at the creature; Thea was pushed back, trapped between the edges of the shelter they’d made and – Nakan? He seemed to be swinging his enormous greataxe at the thing.
Thea screamed again as hot blood splattered across her face.
This was – not fun. Thea’s hair swirled around her hair, sending droplets of damp red blood flying through the air to hiss as they sank into the snow. She pressed one hand to the focus beneath her tunic, and snapped the other out past the wolf attacking them, murmuring low arcane phrases into the night.
A massive ghostly bolt of lightning erupted from behind the wolf, and thunder crashed loudly through the night, sweeping out in a wave of powerful force.
((Thea casts Shatter on the square behind the wolf (upper left); with a 10 foot radius, this should hit the wolf but not Nakan or Echo))

Con save! Gpjs1dyc1d20+2The wolf growled at the impact of an arrow in its flank, then whimpered and yelped at the lightning that crackled around it seizing its muscles. But it stood strong, resilient. It had a goal, a job to do, and by Fenrisúlfr would do it. Lunging the creature leapt at the smallest target it had tried to snap at earlier, any intelligence it might have had set aside. Stepping up to the space the catfolk had just vacated he snapped his jaws again. Attack to Echo again 1d20+5If hit: 2d6+3If hit, make a DC13 strength saving throw or be knocked prone. From behind, impossible to see in the snow and wind, was another wolf. This was, pure white with grey speckles, the perfect snow camouflage. This one was much more round in the middle. Well fed - at least, for winter- and a belly that was hanging lower to the ground. She seemed to step out of the snow itself as she forwent stealth for active attacks. The prey had been pushed back right into the jaws of the first wolf's alley. Her jaws opened to hamstring the targeted prey, with advantage due to Pack Tactics 1d20+5 or 1d20+5If hit: 2d6+3If hit, make a DC13 strength saving throw or be knocked prone. 1d20+2·1d20+5·2d6+3·1d20+5·1d20+5·2d6+3

Thea watched in horror as the lightning hit and the wolf seemed to shrug it off, and start to move away, following after Echo.
Frantically, Thea fumbled for a dagger, and stabbed at the wolf as it retreated.
