Arioch had been looking at the wares for the last five minutes. He hadn't been so obvious as to stare at them right in front of the shop, but that was only because this was the first time he had been considering thievery. Normally thieving was strictly forbidden in the tribe and with good reason, the punishments were harsh and unforgiving to the point where it really put into perspective just how much you were willing to put on the line to acquire something. But in this city... Things were different, there were so many people, so many things happening at once... Not only it would be easier but he didn't know anyone. Perhaps, just perhaps he could nick an article and run away without getting caught. Yes, that sounded like a good plan, why wouldn't it be.
He walked up to the shop and was met with the intense stare of the owner that acted both as a smith and as a vendor. A tall man with big burly arms and a receding gray hairline, despite the fact that he wasn't really old. He gazed at him with gray tired eyes and let out a "humpfh" when he asked if he could take a look, and then didn't take his eyes away from him. Damn, he thought, this was going to be harder than he thought. Also the fact that he was getting incredibly nervous didn't help, it was winter outside and he was probably sweating already.
"I'd like to get uhh... one of those daggers behind you"
"Those are kitchen knives, boy"
"Yes"
The man frowned, but then turned away to grab them. And in that moment Arioch leaned his body forward and grabbed one of the blades, he tried to take the blade away from the stand and then a "clang" sounded. A loud "clang", as he realised that the hilt of the blade was locked to the piece of forniture via an iron chain. Immediately the man turned around just in time to see the "Oh shit" expression in Arioch's face.
"Hey!!" The man shouted with murder on his face
Arioch didn't stick around to see what else would happen, he bolted so fast he was pretty sure what the man kept shouting at was just an after image of him, it took his conciousness a while to keep up with him and to the present as he dodged as many people as he could and ran into an alleyway where he hid, slamming his back against the wall breathing heavily. Not because of the physical effort, he could take that, and much more. But because of how stressful the situation had been.
He took a look at his hands, they were shaking. Man, what if they caught him, he thought. Thieves where he came from had their hands cut or were stoned, or stoned to death even. His heart was beating loudly on his chest, and his green eyes gazed at the end of the alley waiting for an impossible big army of iron-clad men to try and arrest him for his foul crimes.

Hmm, interesting.
Echo was reclined on top of the railing of a stone staircase at the edge of the market, hood thrown back and one leg dangling off the side, as she toyed and played with one of her daggers. At least, she had been until she spotted something much, much more interesting. Or rather, someone. Farther in the market, in front of an open-air shop, stood one of the weirdest looking guys she had seen for some time. Not super tall (for once) but pale skin, crazy hair, and a pretty cool mask that covered his lower face…yeah, that was odd. But that was not the most interesting part about him. The most interesting part was that, as a former thief herself, the tabaxi could tell when someone was staking out a joint to rob. Though, the kid was also just doing a pretty poor job of hiding it too. His skin glistened in the winter sun just a little much for someone with honest intentions and his walk was stiff and uncertain, but as Echo continued to watch he did end up approaching what looked to be a weaponsmith.
Huh, would the kid actually do it?
The boy was met with a gray-haired man, arms crossed, and even from where she sat the treasure hunter could see the bulging lines along his arms and neck. Maybe not the best target, but the point was not to get caught in the first place, right? Maybe the guy figured that big and muscly meant slow. Pretty reasonable. It looked as if the two were now talking. Echo sheathed her dagger and turned so that she was now sitting toward the pair, both legs lightly kicking against the stone wall. The shopkeeper moved around to fetch something. Oh, good one! Distractions were always a great way of getting some extra time to run. Now, would the kid go for one of the spears lying against the wall? Or maybe something smaller and more practical to steal, like a dagger or even a coin pouch left behind by an eager customer? Or…
…a sword that was chained in place?
Echo could almost hear the loud clang of metal against metal and visibly winced. No, not that! Sure enough, the burly man working the store turned at once and shouted something at the boy, his face growing bright red and his hands reaching for an axe that lay at the foot of his counter. To the boy’s credit, he ran fast. Like, really fast. Damn. Echo blinked once and the pale guy was gone, her eyes scanning the crowd for a little while before they just barely caught him dipping out from around a group of shoppers and into a side alley. The shopkeeper by now had abandoned his stand and was roaming the market for any sign of the would-be-thief, glinting axe in tow, but was soon enough approached by a pair of guards. The man shouted a few somethings at them but, evidently, they seemed much more concerned with the waving around of a weapon than his own lamentations, as they soon sent the man back to his store empty handed. Hmm.
Sketchy planning and abysmal execution, but…pretty decent getaway. Nice. Her curiosity now firmly fixated on the stranger, Echo pulled up her hood and pushed off from the railing, landing at its base with a little skip before melting into the crowd. She had to find out who this guy was. The tabaxi quickly made her way around the market, one eye open for the shopkeeper (he was safely leaning against his stand and muttering to himself), the other open for any guards (they still seemed more concerned with the shopkeeper and his murderous haze), and keeping her form as much within the shadows as she could. Reaching the alleyway soon enough, Echo glanced once over her shoulder before sliding in.
“Hi!”
Spotting the stranger almost immediately (okay, you probably should not cut your escape that short?), Echo gave him a little wave and checked the mouth of the alley one last time. It seemed like no one had noticed them there. Good. Pulling her hood down she then leaned against the wall opposite to him.
“So…that was, like, a pretty good try! But also really, really bad at the same time. I take it you, uh, don’t do much stealing, huh?”

At the first sign of anything remotely sentient addressing him he jerked around like if Echo had poked him with a dagger. He was unsure of whether the woman was truly friendly or not yet, in his current state of paranoia there could be a regiment of guards coming after him to kill him for his attempted theft and subsequent failure. He unconvincingly tried to pretend like nothing was the matter even though he was clearly agitated. A funny thing to behold, to be sure.
"Huh?" He feigned innocence "Haha what are you talking about?"
He then leaned against the wall of the alley like he was super comfortable after one of his daily, mad jogs through the city dodging merchants and pedestrians alike. Nothing like a good exersize to get the blood flowing. Arms crossed, legs crossed a bit too just by the end, one foot touching the ground with the tip of his boots.
"Stealing? What? Haha"

What in the Cat Lord’s name was he doing?
Echo stifled a giggle with her hand. The way the stranger squirmed at the sound of her voice, quickly stammered out a few deflecting questions of his own, and then moved to casually lean against the wall of the alley in the least casual way possible…it was kind of adorable! He was trying soooo hard to look innocent. He was failing miserably at it, as far as the tabaxi was concerned, but, like, two thumbs up for effort! Kid had some real pep.
“Oh? Then either you’ve got one heck of an exercise routine, or you really need to work on your people skills.”
The tabaxi grinned, leaned forward a bit, and pointed a clawed finger at the boy’s chest.
“Listen, I might be pretty new here, but these eyes can spot a thief from a mile away! What you tried to do just now was nothing less than a good ol’ snatch and grab.”
Echo frowned.
“Though maybe you took the whole ‘grab’ part a little too seriously. You’re supposed to steal the thing too, y’know, not just…grab it?”
Huh. That was actually kind of confusing.
“But that’s okay! Because instead of some nasty, mean guard, you get-“
Her grin returning, the treasure hunter jumped a little in place and threw open her arms.
“-me! The name’s Echo, and I’m gonna teach you how to take something that isn’t yours and not end up in jail!”

At that point Arioch was doing his darned best not to blush. His best was not nearly enough however as it would have taken anyone with actual experience in lying to pull it off and the only subterfuge in which he was experienced was in feigning bravado. And slowly, that was coming to a stop and becoming actual courage, even if it still was a bit away from him. Was it... was it working? He couldn't tell but he better keep it up just in case it was and he blew it up on accident. Right then and there he was really susceptible to everything.
"Hm, yes, I am... not from here and I'm... training to go fight in the arena. That is vhy. That's vhy I'm running a lot. To."
Processing
"To get more stamina. I'll need it"
It wasn't a big lie... more like, a half-truth? He had seen the huge colliseum and would probably try and fight in it at some point. Surely all the big-shot warriors would be there. But the weapons in the market... they were far too expensive to even consider buying. A thousand gold pieces? Seriously? Who has that kind of coin considering the price they wanted to buy pelts from him at? Ludicrous.
"I am not a thief!"
He protested, this time slightly more frustrated. It wasn't so much that he wouldn't admit to the fact if presented with actual evidence but it sounded more like name-calling to him, like a dishonorable label to have.
"I... No, no I didn't. It stuck to my hand is all."
That was the best he could come up with in short notice. The mention of a nasty guard caught his attention and made his heart skip a beat.
"Y-you vhat?"
He said and for a moment it was like he forgot how to function properly, blinking, frowning, and then rising his eyebrows, and then back to squinting at her. Had he heard it right? He didn't even know where to begin, first a sword was attatched to a stand with an iron chain and now he had been found out by a bipedal cat that said wasn't going to rat him out to the guards but instead teach him how to do it properly. It was so surreal he, for a moment, thought he ate the wrong kind of shrooms at breakfast.

Uh huh.
Echo nodded at everything the kid said but her grin only grew wider. The blush would have been hint enough but, like, that was training for the arena? Really? The tabaxi leaned her back against the alley wall and clicked her tongue, looking the stranger up and down. He was even worse at lying than he was at stealing! With his big size, muscly muscles, and sick as heck mask the arena bit was probably true; maybe he even needed more stamina or whatever. But, honestly? Grabbing at random things in the market and then running away from an axe swinging lunatic shopkeeper and the city guard seemed, like, the exact opposite of a healthy workout. Cute story, though.
The tabaxi giggled again, this time out loud, when the now visibly frustrated boy finally shouted that he was not a thief. Even more so when he mentioned getting his hand stuck instead. Suuuuure thing, kid. Echo also get her “hand stuck” more than once back in Baldur’s Gate, but at least she made sure it got stuck to pickable things! Not actual chained in place objects. Echo reached up and gave him a quick pat on the side of his arm. She had a lot of work to do here.
A lot.
“That’s true! You’re not!”
The treasure hunter kicked one leg up against the wall and pointed.
“Not yet, anyway. Like…I get it! If I called myself a thief after that performance? I would be sooooo embarrassed too. You’re lucky you didn’t end up in jail! Or dead. That guy seemed seriously insane. Really. Even had a scary big axe and all.”
Echo frowned and peeked at the end of the alley. Honestly though, she hoped the big guy had calmed down by now and was back at his stall. The last thing they needed was a suspicious and lowkey murderous merchant interrupting her little impromptu lesson. Learning and dying never really went well together.
The treasure hunter returned her attention to the kid with a gleam back in her eyes.
“But once we’re done, you’ll be able to call yourself a thief all day and every day! That’s an Echo guarantee! So whaddaya say?”
Echo held out her hand. She also gave a small smile and cocked her head, her tail flicking against the stone behind her. The kid’s anger and nervousness and the weird eye blink squint thing going on were not completely lost on her. Like…he tried to steal something, that was absolutely without a doubt. But! She knew from her own experience how much a failed attempt could rattle someone.
“And worst case? We have a little fun. Maybe even get back at that nasty brute.”

Arioch was definitely not used to lying and it showed, his mind was doing such a gymnastic exercise to even make it believable that it was the equivalent of heavy lifting, and what was worst he didn't seem to be fully capable to manage shame, worry, and a credible line of dialogue at the same time. In the end, he defaulted and just hoped for the best. And quickly, he regretted his "kind of" admission. He wasn't good at reading people... Not cat people at least. What if she was lying to him? But by then it was too far to go back, he knew, deep inside and not-that-deep-inside that his lies had the consistency of wet paper and the tabaxi seemed to be such at ease with that, that it wasn't even a contest. He profundly disliked that sensation of exposure.
He was so insecure about what to do next that he didn't react to the pat on the shoulder; though it would feel hard to the touch. As if touching a warm kind of metal, only soft on the fingers as the surface texture was made of naked skin, but absolutely immobile as a whole. When she admitted that he wasn't a thief however he relaxed a bit, only a slight bit. And then the leg against the wall happened which had him between flustered, and puzzled. He couldn't get a read on the cat person or her intentions, and he was close of giving up.
"Vhat? Really?"
He asked about the axe, and turned to look in the same direction as soon as she did, as if expecting to see said person running towards them like a madman. He wouldn't, would he?
"Vhat's an Echo guarantee?"
He asked then, with legitimate curiosity, and oblivious to the fact that it was her name as she had introduced herself only seconds ago. He didn't know the local slang at all, and if he was about to cut some kind of deal with her, he wanted to know what he was signing up for. So, he waited for her to clarify that before shaking her hand; still not over the fact that she looked so different to him and so different to a human being. He had seen weird things since arriving in Waterdeep but he had kept to himself most cases, with only one exception. He was wary about it. Maybe he even would have been excited at the new experience if only he hadn't been so worried a few seconds ago. Granted, the attitude of the girl helped him relax, but he only had himself to fall back on.
"How?"
He cocked his head slightly to the side.

Wait, really?
“It’s, like, uh, my guarantee! I’m Echo. Echo in the Valley. I introduced myself, like, literally not even a few minutes ago.”
Cat Lord, they were off to a great start here! It was like that one time she had tried to make a deal with a goblin while treasure hunting, but all the thing did was try to stab her a bunch of times. At least the kid was thankfully not doing that. Yet, anyway. Echo frowned though as she waited for him to shake her hand. And waited. And waited some more. And then waited even longer as her tail lashed at the brickwork behind her. Was he, like, actually going to leave her hanging like this?
Rude!
The tabaxi let out a sharp hum, closed her fingers into a fist, and then shook it once before playfully punching the stranger on his shoulder. She gave him a pointed look.
“Right. Go team.”
Echo’s grin was quick to return, though, and she cocked her head to the side as she tapped a claw against her chin.
“What, and give away the surprise? That’s no fun!”
Ha! Nice try, buddy! She knew how teaching worked. She had to, like, keep most everything a secret until the last possible moment and then test him on how fast he could think on his feet. Or…something like that. Echo had never really, actually taught someone anything before! Well...she did try to teach Wisp how to sing once, but that ended less than good.
It was bad.
“Let’s just say that I might have a little plan which involves getting him kicked out of the market for good.”
The tabaxi dislodged herself from the stone wall and pulled her hood back on. She then tightened her scarf, motioned for her new student to follow, and began to move toward the alleyway entrance.
“Lesson one on being a good thief: dig your claws into any and every opportunity and exploit the heck out of them! Like, say, the fact that the market guard is none too happy with our mutual friend right now.”
Reaching the edge of the shadows which blackened the alley, Echo crouched down and looked out across the market. The bustle was still as bustling as ever and, with a pleased purr, the treasure hunter noticed that big burly brute guy was back at his stall and already haggling with another customer. His axe was nowhere to be seen, either. Her ears flattened. Unfortunately, the pair of guards from earlier were still watching him as well. That was good and bad. Maybe more bad though given what she was working with here.
Echo looked back toward the stranger and grinned.
“Oh! By the way, what’s your name?”
She rubbed the back of her neck.
“Just in case I gotta, uh, yell for you to run or something.”

"Oh... I... Nevermind"
He started to try and defend himself but the promptly dropped the subject. She was right of course, but he felt like he was getting a lot of things he ought to pay attention to at the same time and his ability to retain such information was less than ideal for the situation. As much as he would have liked to think of himself as a fearsome, inmutable warrior the fact was that he was still almost a child by Waterdeep standards, and frequently he was regarded as such by people that did not know him, something that irked him to no end. Thus, many situations either caught him off guard or made him nervous, whereas the same would not have happened to a socially savvy person.
And so it happened again when she retreated her hand, it was like a domino effect, there was like a queue in his mind that did not meet up with real life timing, and just as his mind unclogged and things went back to real time he also began to realise how embarassingly stupid he was looking right then.
Luckily, she didn't took it the wrong way and proceeded to talk. Arioch listened with interest, still surprised by the fact that he was about to take advice from a walking, talking snowtiger with a different skin coloration and... well she did look more sophisticated and less like she was about to eat his head off.
"Vhat, vhy? How?"
He asked, and then was surprised when she dislodged herself from the wall. Her anatomy was parts fascinating, and part alarming to him. He didn't know how to feel about it. He despised most monster races, which was to say, anything that wasn't human due to his inherent bias, due to his upbringing. Orcs were first among those, but others were not excempt either. They were always up to no good. And yet he was curious about it, but when she talked about kicking him out of the market for good that caught his attention. He didn't really know the merchant, not enough to wish him any ill will, and he thought getting someone kicked out only to retrieve a simple weapon was... a bit overkill.
Arioch hesitated for a moment and then reached over to the cat, to place one of his firm hands upon her shoulder. He also wondered what would her body feel like, one of those mini doubts thinking if he should press with the usual strength about him or if that would be harmful to her. He was really out of his element. And he might or might not want to no what her fur felt like to the touch.
"My name is Arioch, but I'd appreciate if you vouldn't shout it out loud. It's... it vouldn't be vise to have them know my name yet."
He argued, before looking into her eyes and finally saying what he had meant to say seconds earlier
"Do you know this merchant?"

Echo felt the stranger grab onto her shoulder and inhaled sharply. There was certainly some strength behind the touch - he did have some pretty big muscles after all - but it was far from being hard enough to hurt her. It was just unexpected. So much so that the tabaxi flinched as the fur on her neck bristled, and her hand twitched close to one of the daggers strapped to the outside of her thighs. Echo caught herself and stopped the instinctive motion, though. As much as she disliked being handled by strangers, least of all from behind her back, and as much as experience made her cautious, the kid hardly seemed aggressive. Or even angry. She looked back again. More concerned, really, which was, like, super valid given everything!
She still slid her body enough to the side to brush off his hand.
“Uh, sure! I guess. Just remember – if you hear someone scream 'Mask Kid!' that you start booking it into the nearest alley, okay?”
Echo did raise an eye at that, though. It was all a little suspicious. Granted, he was a really bad thief, so maybe the kid had just managed to get himself into plenty of trouble before she found him. Maybe he even had a whooooole list of enemies in the city already. That would be kind of tragic, honestly. And probably bad for his overall health and wellbeing. Not much she could do about that right now!
The treasure hunter shrugged at his next question.
“Kinda? Like…I’ve seen him here before. Never bothered to buy anything of his, though.”
Which was probably a good thing! Who knew how easy it was to set a guy like that off? Tell the wrong joke, ask about a price, or just look at him funny and, for all she knew, he would be off swinging and chopping and slicing away. Still, it was odd that the kid would even ask. Echo peeked out from the alley, checked to make sure that no one had spotted them crouching there yet, and looked back.
“Why? You wanna, like, throw a brick with his name on it or something? We don’t really have time to be carving rocks, kid.”
The treasure hunter pulled her hood down lower.
“In fact, thiefing lesson number two: don’t stay in one place for too long. The longer we sit here the more likely it is that someone is going to take an interest in the two weirdos crouching in an alleyway.”

Mask kid certainly was an improvement over having his name being suddenly and irreparably affixed to the mental image of a thief. For him, who craved honor and recognition it would not be a good thing. He dreaded failure, which is why he was beyond embarassed with his attempt and the current situation was the equivalent of hitting rock bottom. It was the fact that nobody here knew him what prompted him to even try to steal something like that, the fact that, maybe nobody would knew. And also that it would give him an edge in the arena. When she mentioned that she didn't know the man he couldn't help but to raise his eyebrows a little, in shock, a gesture that only deepened as she continued to suggest that they throw a brick with his name. And then called him kid, which just soured him.
He figured then, he had been right to mistrust the strangely looking creature, not something hard to do considering his inherent bias towards beast races.
"Vhat? No, no"
He protested and with each successive no his stance became stronger, and his voice, firmer, slowly but steadily regaining his confidence as anger began to take over his initial insecurity, he tried to lock her gaze with her's.
"I do not vant to ruin this man's life, or get him avay from the market. I only vanted to take a veapon because I might... need it. But that's just overdoing it, I don't know that man, I have never seen him before in my life... Vell I have seen him but I've never talked to him and I don't know enough. Vhy vould I throw a brick at him? That vould kill him, and I don't kill people on a vhim like that!"
His stance was growing firmer, bolder about them, and while initially he had been more than glad to take a lesson in thievery he was now increasingly concerned that it came at a cost he was not willing to pay
"Let's just go somevhere else, before any guards come this way"

Echo’s ears perked and her head cocked to the side as the kid began to protest. Her eyes narrowed. Ugh, what now? They were going to get spotted if they kept this up! By some random shopper if they were lucky, by the city guard if they were less lucky, and by axe-swinging maniac merchant man himself if they were super less lucky. This was kinda…dumb! Dumb and maybe dangerous and really, really annoying now, too! Echo huffed. Was this kid even a thief? Not just a bad one but, like, at all? Or did he just have what she could only imagine was literally the worst thief to ever thief as a former mentor or something? Still, the stranger’s voice was becoming more and more confident again, firm, and somewhat angry, and so she spared a listen to his rant all the same. Even if her hand again strayed toward one of her daggers as his stance became harder and they locked eyes. Was he a threat right then? Nah. The tabaxi figured they were still cool, even if he was a big dumb maybe thief. Could he become a threat with those big heckin muscles, though? Sure! He could! That was not a fun thought at all. She wanted to be ready for the possibility.
Echo’s mouth skewed into a scoff and she stuck her tongue out.
“What? No! You don’t throw the brick at him! You, like, throw it at his stall or through the window of his house or something. Send a message, y’know? Not kill him!”
Cat Lord, really? She was no assassin or thug or anything like that either! She was hardly even a thief anymore. She was doing this whole thing more as a favor to…well, to no one she supposed. To her old self, maybe. To Wisp. But she had no intention of killing the merchant guy! Just scaring him off and stealing his stuff and maybe getting him arrested. Like, no big deal. Echo dragged her hands down her face, whipped her tail, and then sighed. She looked hard at the kid.
“But fine. Fine! You win. We won’t get him kicked out or anything.”
Party pooper. Though…maybe he had a good point. The tabaxi sighed again and rubbed her neck. He might have been dangerous, he might have been possibly insane, and he might have been big and sweaty, but Echo figured even a guy like the merchant might have a family. Could she really deal with risking them getting hurt, too? No. Probably not. This was no pungent scented, fur wrapped, puff pastry of a guy like the ritzy nobles they used to go after in Baldur’s Gate. Just a guy. Her expression softened and her shoulders sagged.
“Look, you’re…probably right. We don’t wanna ruin this guy’s whole life over a dumb kitchen knife. I, uh, get that. I do! But…”
Echo put her foot down, figuratively and literally, and leaned closer to the stranger. She looked behind her, checked the market, and then whispered.
“…you just said it yourself: you need a ‘veapon’. So, we’re gonna get you one! No ifs. No buts. No ands. Not even a lone maybe! We’re doing it. Got it? Good.”
She returned to a crouch and jerked her head toward the alleyway opening.
“Now, any other questions or concerns or huffing and puffing to do? Before we get going and do this thing? Here’s a little hint. The right answer to that is, like, the opposite of everything I just said.”
