As the pair of street philosophers made their way down the muddy, bayside pathway that passed for a main road along the docks, Nakan's attention was grabbed by the massive vessel that had been seemingly lashed to land to act as an impromptu and construction free building of sorts. The sheer ingenuity of the recycled ship amused him to some degree. When the Yuan-ti stopped before the ship - it was being used as an inn, on closer inspection - Nakan stopped as well, assuming that this was likely where the man was staying.
As Malakbel gave his own response to the goliath's take on the difference between life and living, Nakan carefully considered his next statement. The Yuan-ti wasn't wrong in his questioning of the worth of helping others, this topic was relatively devoid of right answers...regardless of where one hailed from or what they believed.
Nakan crossed his arms in front of him, his neck craning to take in the view of the sky and the upper deck of the ship before him. When his voice finally came, it was in a low and thoughtful tone. "I'd be lying to you if I said I always thought it was worthwhile to do other's fighting for them. I've been bedridden, nursing wounds more times than I can count because of involving myself in their battles." His gaze shifted from the ship and back to the Yuan-ti. "And my people nor I believe in the afterlife either, at least not in the traditional sense. But that's another topic for another time."
"But I don't step in to help someone with the expectation of some grand reward when death finally catches up to me. And I don't step in to help just anyone or to resolve every minor problem. What gives it all worth is hard to describe, to put into words. But, generally, it is safe to assume that if you aid someone when they are in need, they will often return the favor when the roles are reversed. Not always, mind, but in most cases."
Nakan would glance over the Yuan-ti a final time, the inebriated man beginning to show signs of his struggle to remain upright. The goliath would give a warm smile, and extend his hand. "But I'm sure we'll continue to debate this until the end of days if we're not careful. And I'm sure you could probably use some time to rest and sleep off your celebrations. It was good to make your acquaintance, Malakbel. I wish you luck in finding the answer to the questions you have, and I hope we might meet again someday."
After giving the other man a chance to bid his farewells, Nakan would wait for the Yuan-ti to make it through the entrance of the establishment before turning on his heel and beginning his trek back to his own lodgings.
